Sorry, this is my first time ever posting here! (I know nothing about cars.) I've been wanting to get a 2000 Celica GT-S and I'd rather have manual than automatic. My question is whether it would be cheaper as a manual? I've heard that manuals are more expensive at the dealership and cheaper elsewhere, but maybe I've got it backwards.

Sorry if this is a useless post.

It all depends, dealers usually mark manuals cheaper then autos, since they are usually standard when they are brand new. But since its out of production it all depends on the dealership. In other aspects with the two, manuals are more reliable then automatics. But both have there advantages and disadvanges. With a manual you have to do some regular maintenance work later on down the road when parts begin to get worn down and need replacing, for example, a clutch. With autos you really don't have to worry about this. But the downside to this is that when autos go bad, they are a whole lot more expensive to fix then a manual. With all that put aside, with the car your looking at, if performance isn't really a issue to you then just go with a auto then a manual. But if you prefer a manual, just go with that since in my opinion it makes driving a lot more fun. But Celica Gts's are harder to learn manual in then other cars due to the narrow shift points they have. A lot of celica owners have miss shifted their cars due to the narrow gears. But many have also learned to drive manual in there gts's, so it's doable haha. If your looking into getting this car for performance then get the manual since your able to change the revs manually. The car is equipped with a technology usually known as lift to the celica community, which is also similar to i-vtec in hondas/acuras, and when you land out of lift you lose a lot of your performance as well. Due to this, if you have some intention of rather buying a auto gts, then i would just recommend on looking into getting a auto/manual gt, since its shown that they perform a little better then auto gts. Well, I think I'm getting a little to in depth with this, so I'll stop now haha. Hopefully this helped and good luck on your purchase smile.gif.

Automatic transmission are usually more expensive than Manual. i find the reverse beeping on the celica quite annoying its like your driving a truck.

I would also tend to think that a manual is cheaper and easier to maintain. Automatic transmissions require fluid changes (and do not believe the manual that there is any lifetime fill in there), and often (with newer cars) the fluid is very expensive and even more expensive to get it flushed. Also, if you neglected the transmission, and it slips or has physical damage, rebuild is a option, but a new transmission is best option if you wish to retain the automatic (because rebuilds can cost quite a bit, but there is a high chance that who ever is rebuilding it forgets something or messes something up, after all it is a very complex unit).

Well, there are alot more parts to an automatic than there are to a manual. Narrow gears? Are you refering to a short shifter?

if your getting a GT-S, going automatic is a bad choice! i've learned manual on my celica, and i found it pretty easy. The gates in the celica is pretty narrow, but i didnt find it too difficult to learn with. Aznboy01gts pretty much explained a lot of the details biggrin.gif
And in the 6 speed, reverse does beep..i think it's so people dont confuse 1st gear with reverse. a lot of my friends stalled my car thinking they were in first, but they were in reverse tongue.gif

When buying new, the automatic transmission is more expensive and it is sometimes an option that you have to pay for. I would say maybe ~$600-800 more for most compact cars. When buying a used car, the price difference isn't as obvious for older cars. As in your case, an 8 year old car like the 2000 Celica's price shouldn't differ much at all for a manual and auto.

So the GTS trim comes in automatic? I know Integra GS-Rs come in auto, but they are rare.

manuals are cheaper.. only in rare cases (i.e. g35 6MT) where the manual transmission is completely different are manuals more expensive.. why? because automatic is less effort..

manual transmission can also help you save costs in terms of gas consumption.

Name several cars where manual is more expensive.

Yes automatic requires less effort to drive, not to function properly. Automatics have alot more parts than manuals so I'd like to know a car where the pricier transmission is manual.
