my parents have been stressing to me how important it is to get out on my own and do my own things, they are tired of driving me places and being involved in my social life, they say it's time to think about getting an apartment, driving, and making my own money.
I've been making my own money since I was 16 so..that's already set, but....moving out of the house..how many of you have done that?
do you find it easy? hard?
have you ever found yourself starving cause u just payed a bill but don't have enough for dinner? ever had to work 2 jobs just to support yourself?
please give me some advice on getting into the real world, since I can't post in the 20 and over threads..I figured I'd ask you guys because college is a sort of real world....I guess.
so yeah..fill me in, I don't wanna be poor, I don't wanna fail either.

wow you're parents must be great, my mom is all over my business. she won't let me do things on my own, she calls me constantly to check where i am, she worries about the littlest things and she stresses over it. i asked her one time if i could move out and she starts going on this thing where i haven't gone out into the real world and i don't know anything. shes like when you start to pay your own bills and all the other crap then you will know that making money is very hard. sure i know making money is hard, but hell, its a great start to do things on my own god damn it... if my parents want me to move out, omg i would do it fast. i'll just get a friend who would want to move out also and we can then share the apt. xD

I'm 19 and moved out on my own when I was 18. Depending on where you live it's not that bad. Just keep your priorities straight and everything will be fine. Don't get an apartment that's too expensive (room with people), do good in school, be a really good with finances, and be really good with finances. I've seen too many times when kids spend money on stupid stuff (expensive jeans, xbox, playstation, etc.) that's not needed then suddenly find themselves unable to pay month's rent or eat. If you drive, you should know that your car will break your bank (insurance, payments, and gas). Keeping up with a car costs more than my rent, so nowadays I just take a bike. Good luck with moving out.

yeah I pretty much went through a mini-crisis when I was turning 20 (which was only a few weeks ago) hahah. but my experience is different from yours, as I am living on-campus and not at home. and my parents ARE supporting me financially. But I still feel weight of this pressure to suddenly grow up and become independent.

and you're right, life isn't a race. take it slowly; work and save more money until you're financially secure. then slowly you can start venturing out. you don't have to do everything all at once

Ahaha I passed my driving test (behind the wheel) with 5 marks (i think the maximum where I am is like 12 or something. I forget), which is 1 less than my boyfriend! Unfortunately I haven't really been driving because I don't have a car due to certain circumstances beyond my control, so yea it's been about 3 years since I've gotten my license and I don't even know how to drive anymore! The last time I drove well was probably 2.5 years ago! =X

Anyways, back to the topic. I turned 20 over a week ago and I still live at home. My boyfriend drives me everywhere, since he goes to college with me, lives a mile away from me, and I don't have a car. I could go buy a car, but I don't think I would be able to pay for my own car insurance and gas, since my part-time job is only 10 hours a week, and I'm currently taking 5 classes. >_<"

I want to move out, but even if I do, I'll probably end up living with my boyfriend, which could be a good or bad thing. I do stay over at his house a lot, but I don't know if it will work since his room isn't the biggest thing in the world. I wish I could be more independent, but I don't make enough to even pay for my phone bill and fooding. I make like $100/week, so yea you can't really do much with that. Bleh. I don't know if I could ever be independent until I go to graduate school. happy.gif;;
I'm really thankful that you're alive. The news about you is my reason for living. We should meet at least once while living. No matter what you're doing be healthy and always live happily. For you being born, for meeting you... I'm so thankful.

my university is 3 hours away from home, so I've been living away from home for almost 4 years now (I'm also at the university in the summer sometimes). Driving is a necessity at home, it's important if you need to do anything (especially stay out late?), so I'm a pretty experienced driver now (I drive a bit at the university, but only to go shopping/out).

In terms of living in your own apartment, you need to know how to cook and be willing to clean? I guess it also comes down to what you can tolerate (your roomate, the cleanness of your apartment, etc.). Living with a roomate is definitely cheaper, but it could be frustrating if you don't know what to expect. I've lived with 5 different people in my 4 years, I've become worse friends with one and closer friends with another one. The other guys are pretty neutral. I find that being able to yell at each other helps keep things smooth. But I guess this varies from person to person, so whatever you find suits you.

Man, and <insert obligatory Asian female driver joke>.

hey guys, I got my drivers license today at 9 45am w00t.gif and my dad was really supportive in it all.
I'm not gonna think about moving out, I think my parents just say things because they were out on their own when they were my age..so I could just take things to personal.
thanks alot for your help guys, I have 6 months till I turn 20, so I'm gonna live up my teens till the very last day and act stupid and querky because I CAN ^^. I can use the excuse " I'm just a teenager" lol.

i understand how you feel.
dont worry.
i dont want to be poor and i dont want to fail too.
you're not the only one.

my parents constantly helps me out,
but at the same time stresses the same thing to me.

i cant. i know that i cant juggle school and work and moving out all by itself.
if i need time for good grades, i need more than 3 hours to study, you know?

it's hard, but i think everyone leaves the nest at a different time.
just pace yourself, and keep the future in mind.
know your limits, and know your potential.

you'll get far.

take care.
