Seems like every winter time i get a cold sore. It happens once a year and i can feel it coming when i wake up in the morning. fury.gif They get really big and back when i was in high school I could just skip school until they healed down. Now that i'm in college i can't afford to skip any of my classes! unsure.gif I haven't had one yet this yr but i just know it's going to come! sad.gif

So Does anyone know why it happens? How to prevent them from happening? Or how to get rid of em? mellow.gif

they're groos looking crazy.gif

you get cold sores by coming into contact with someone who has herpes....by any means that will involve [for lack of a better word] transfer of liquid between the infected individual and yourself...i.e kissing, sharing drinks, etc...

yes, this means you have herpes. dont worry too much because its incredibly common, but cold sores are only possible if you have the herpes virus....they are the manifestation of the virus, and are usually activated via some trigger, i.e light, cold, stress, sickness, etc...

after this resolves the virus usually becomes dormant/latent, hides in one of the nerve centres/ganglions on your body until reactivated again. it is not curable. once you have herpes, you have herpes for LIFE.

i think there has been some kind of treatment/medicine to help cold sores, but im not sure abt this point.

Cold sores are the same as canker sores, right? Means you're vitamin b deficient. cut down on sweets, sleep, and drink chrysanthemum tea. x)

Cold sores are usually on your lips and canker sores are usually in your mouths somewhere

once you have herpes, you have herpes for LIFE.

i get cold sores when i have a fever.. it's annoying i've been getting it since i was little.. like YOUNG, i have pictures where my lip is all ugly looking..there is like Herpes Type 1 and 2.. something like that.. i read it from here, http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/cold_sores.htm

"Cold sores and genital herpes are both caused by the Herpes simplex virus (HSV), however, they are usually caused by different strands of the virus.

Cold sores are typically caused by Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1).

Genital herpes on the other hand is usually caused by a different strand of the virus called Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2)"

I went to Walgreens last year & got my sister Abreeva. Spent 20 bucks & she
only used it 1 day. She kept complaining & stopped using it. such a waste
of my money, i know... haha

I did get a good tip from the counter lady.
She said that she was allergic to fish & gets them all the time.
If you have vanilla extract at home, use that instead.
Just dab it on your cold sore 3-4 times a day & it will be gone in no time
-- not a miracle worker, so it won't magically disappear in a second.
Vanilla extract dries that area & it will look slightly brown, but it should
be gone in a few days.

I highly doubt I have herpes, because I do get cold sores once or twice a
year.
I only share drinks w/my family, haven't kissed anyone, & i not sexually active...
I get cold sores when I neglect what I eat...

even though i hate the smell of carmex it works for me!! trust me when I was little ( 1st,2nd grade) it was so bad, but carmex works for me better.. and also when you feel it coming ( the area tends to burn or..hurt?) then don't touch it... just let it be, put some carmex on it.. and this works for me, when I feel like I'm going to get one I shower, the steam helps it.. haha im weird... but i only get it during the cold time and when i get sick.. i get it at least once a year

its usually passed from parents to children when they're a baby. they kiss their babies and don't know that they're transmitting the disease. don't worry though. it could also happen when you're extremely stressed out. i've never gotten them on my lips but i've gotten them on the inside cheeks of my mouth when i was stressed or tired.

Alright well basically, cold sores are something that you get when you're a kid and once it enters your body, it hides in some nerve under your cheek and you can never get it out. Or when you've come into contact with someone else's cold sore because it's highly infectious. It will appear in times of stress or when your lips are dry or when you don't get enough sleep etc.

To prevent them, go to your doctor and ask for a prescription for cold sore medicine. I believe it's called Valtrax although I can't be sure (too lazy to google). Once you feel the tingling of an appearing cold sore start in your lip, take it IMMEDIATELY and the medicine will stop the sore. If it has already appeared, you can still take the medicine but it won't be as effective and then I suggest Abreva. Pricy, but it works.

So basically, keep your lips moisturized, don't share drinks, and relax.

I get cold sores so frequently it's not even funny ;o;

I hate cold sores T__T The first time I ever got one, I broke out with many cold sores and was prescribed by some external antibiotic from my doctor. Well to put it simple since the last time I had it, I was freaking out since I had to go to school the following day.
So I googled and I found a method that seemed to work well for me. Put petroleum jelly/vaseline on the cold sore, this helps to protect it and heal it pretty quick and make sure you avoid acidic foods. There was this time I ate so many green apples that I got a cold sore from it >__>. Well I hope that helps =D
