Al Montashari named Asian player of the year; Japan team of year
Wed 30 Nov, 3:49 PM

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - Saudi Arabia defender Hamad Al Montashari was named Asian player of the year and Japan was crowned team of the year at an awards ceremony overshadowed by controversy.

The Al Ittihad star beat off the challenge of Uzbekistan's Dynamo Kiev striker Maksim Shatskikh for a title diminished by the exclusion of most of Asia's best players because they could not travel to Kuala Lumpur.

An Asian Football Confederation (AFC) dictate that a player must attend the ceremony to be eligible for the award ruled out Manchester United star Park Ji-Sung and his South Korean teammate Lee Young-pyo of Tottenham Hotspur.

It also excluded the Japanese pair of Shunsuke Nakamura and Hidetoshi Nakata, and last year's winner Ali Karimi of Bayern Munich.

The ruling sparked an angry rebuke from the Korean Football Association, and an admission from the AFC that it would reexamine the rules.

"So much has happened in Asian football this year. In coming years I promise you we will be better than this year and we will be celebrating better achievements than this year," said AFC president Mohammed bin Hammam.

Al Montashari, one of the few defenders to pick up the award, now in its 12th year, was pivotal in helping his club win the AFC Champions League and in helping Saudi Arabia reach the World Cup finals in Germany next year.

Asian powerhouse Japan was named team of the year, preferred ahead of South Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia, all of whom qualified for the World Cup.

Asian champions Al Ittihad took out the club team of the year title while North Korea's Choe Myong Ho, touted as the new Ronaldinho, picked up youth player of the year.

Japan's Natsuko Hara was named women's player of the year while the inaugural Asian association of the year went to Qatar, the home nation of bin Hammam.

In another controversial move, no coach of the year was announced after the AFC decided to exclude foreigners and ruled that no Asian was worthy.

All of Asia's representatives at the World Cup are managed by non-Asian coaches.

yup its real; AFC is retarded!!!
this year the award lost all its prestige b/c players like Park Ji Sung and Nakamura etc...were like disqualified or something b/c they couldn't attend
how many times must I fall over and over again? and when will i finally succeed at a such a vital point in my life while my time is dwindling away???

yeah.. this year's AFC award is bull..... those who cant attend would be disqualified.... what a load of bs.... so basically that means only those asian players playing in asia (ie not so good players that no european clubs want) are eligible..... what nonsense LOL

Who decides whether goals should be counted or not? The refs or the players?

oh geez, it's so tough.

yup, its up to the REFS, not the players. the soccer players dont blame the other team, they blame the ref as well.
like lee woonjae says, "luck is also a talent, but one can get only so much luck."

Yeah, blame the reff not the team. If your talking about all the stupid reff calls. A lot of the Korean team fans here, are mostly blamming the reff for the bad and unfair calls at the swiss game, but not the swiss team.

Well, I dont know how good Al Montashari is. So I cant judge if he deserves it or not (actually, every player deserves it unless they did something foul). And if they want the player there to get the award, fine with me, but I would've gave it to Park Ji sung..
and if I judged the people who will be there to recieve the award then I have other people in mind on the Korean taem (since I basically only know the Korean team [in asia]) Like Lee Chun Soo or Kim Nam il. Since Ahn jung hwan isn't here eatheir (He plays for a Europen team right?)

fairplay award? PUAHAHAHHAHA that's the stupidest award, everybody knows you can't win by being fair psh. Hence why Hong Kong has never made the world cup.
