For my upcoming birthday I've been considering asking my parents for a cellphone (it's about time!)

But knowing my parents I know that I would be the one having the pay for the bills tears.gif
I asked myself, do I really need a cell phone? I don't find myself REAALLLLLY needing a cellphone, only in certain situations! (but I still want it haha ph34r.gif I want to experience the joy of texting!)

However I have no idea how "plans" work and whenever I see cellphones in futureshop fliers as being "free" and "$0" I'm confused because I know that it's not "free" LOL wacko.gif (I usually have a terrible understanding of these sort of things, creditcards especially OTL... how will I survive in this world?!)

So I was just wondering, on average how much money do you guys spend on your cellphone bills? per month?
Some people say that they "pay as they go", so how much on average do you think you had to pay?

I think if I have to spend more than $25 a month I wouldn't bother having a cellphone haha ph34r.gif (is without job OTL...) Afterall I'm doing fine so far tongue.gif

Oh and how much is THE PHONE ITSELF? I know it varies from phone to phone, but a nice decent one sweatingbullets.gif (with picture taking abilities haha) ??? thanks smile.gif !

(and please don't say "it depends" without further explanation =___= rolleyes.gif )

we usually use up about 350mins... i dont talk on the phone that much & plus almost everyone i know has tmobile.

Phones nowadays are usually free with a 1 or 2 yr contract... Cingualar now AT&T has rollover mins.

im kinda like you, jobless atm...lol i'm trying hard to find a new job atm...my bank acc has reaallly little money and its gonna suffer if i dont find a job soon Y__Y
im the only one in my household with a cellphone

i'm using virgin mobile prepaid so yeah
i have the cyclops (it was 60$ when i bought it...you can buy it for like 38$ now...)
i just bought it cause it had the best reviews from cnet at the time, and then i found out it was hackable so i bought a usb cable off ebay and installed the drivers and started putting in my own ringtones (sucha joy happy.gif)

i spend about 10 dollars a month? i'm aiming for 5$ lol and just top up 10$ every 3 months
and i get free 5 free minutes everyday (73 free min per month) for watching online commercials so it adds up, since i dont use much...the money i spend is for texting packages

You're like me. I only use the cellphone for certain occasions.

If that's the case, I spend $25 on my cellphone bill every month.

50 minutes anytime call.
1000 minutes between Fido to Fido users.

^^ and that's pretty much it LOL. Text messages are 0.25cents each i think. And if you do order a new cellphone from a company on a term contract, they will most likely give you some sort of promotion such as "3 months of unlimited calling" or something like that.

I use Verizon Wireless and I pay $50 a month for my phone. It's 450 minutes per month and 150 text messages I think... If you're afraid of cell phone bills, prepaid is the way to go.

My last two phone bills were $884.95 and $627.13. Ahaha! Yeah, that goddam Msn is so addicting! But normally I pay $20, that's if I don't exceed my minutes and such. I'm on a $10 plan. After taxes and such, it comes to $20 (not even). And yeah, I'm currently using the Sony Ericsson W810i. It's everything a normal person could want in a phone. It was one of those "free phone". But with free phones you have to sign a three year contact. You should look into that. Overall, I'm happy with everything.

our "house phone" is at&t...it's $30..i think there's 300 anytime minutes and 3,000something night/weekend mins...the other two are tmobile prepaid(mine and parents' other phone)..i think it's $100 for 1,000 mins..and if you don't use up all the minutes in one year..the leftover minutes are added to the new mins..and since you've purchased over $100..you've become a...gold member or something like that..so whenever you buy more minutes..you get an additional 10% of the total minutes(including the leftover)

i don't use my phone that much. haha sweatingbullets.gif

For my dad and me, our bill is about $90/month for 700 minutes, free nights/weekends, free calls to Verizon users, and $10 unlimited texting to Verizon/500 to others for my phone. ^^

we have a family plan, so it's around $100 per month between the 3 of us. last month it was $30 more because of going over airtime + texting >_> I'm with TELUS.. so my part of the family plan comes with 50 minutes & 100 text msgs per month, with unlimited nights & weekends. it was a 3 year contract though so I still got 2 years to go sad.gif

i'm on $54/month. $25plan: 100day/1000weekend&nights but unlimited calling b/w any(?) network. +$10 txt msging plan: 2500txt, umlimited receiving. there's fees in there for caller ID and stuff. no voicemail tho cause i don't use it. i'm sure there's cheaper&better plans. i'm on rogers. (i'm in canada btw).

as for pay as you go. you can go for 10 a month, depending on your use. txt msgs usually range from 10cents - 30cents. You can select the rate you want to go by, depending on the company (eg. 30cent/min, 20cent@day, 40cent@night...etc). i dno how it goes now.

keep in mind there's an activation fee for both plan and pay-as-you-go (i believe).
mine was 35 for the plan i'm using now & pay as you go.. when i started it was 25..

edit:
about the free phone, i dno if it's still like that NOW. but you're tied to a contract for over X year(s). and b/c of the pricing.. you end up evetually paying off the phone thru your bills(that's what i heard LOL sry for false info). and for some, there's no sim card to it (so that means you can't switch to another phone or plan w/o some complication/fees) or your sim card is tie down to the company's phones (meaning.. if you frd brought his/her cell from else where and you slip your sim card into it.. it probably won't work on it)

Mine is about $120 a month because of family plan. But I don't pay for it, my brother does. If its just you on this plan, you can sign up with t-mobile. I know their cheapest plan for singles is $30 a month for 300 miinutes. And if you want unlimited texting, add $10. Or you can get 500 text a month for $5. And if you don't want to buy a phone, you can get a free one from T-mobile if you sign a 2 years contract with them.

I can definitely tell you right now that if you get a phone, you will be so attached to it. When I didn't have a cell phone, I would tell myself I can live without one. But once my brother finally got one for me, I become emotionally attached to it. I feel so weird if I forget my phone at home or somewhere. It feels empty! laugh.gif w00t.gif

I pay as I go with tmobile prepaid... probably $75 a year (a $25 card lasts me about 4 months on average)
I never text and my calls are usually short.
