Comcast Pulling Plug on AZN Television
Asian-American-Targeted Cable Network to Go Black April 9
By Anne Becker -- Broadcasting & Cable, 1/25/2008 4:25:00 PM

Comcast is shutting down AZN Television, its distribution- and advertising-challenged cable network programmed for Asian Americans. The network will cease broadcasting April 9. Its staff of some 15 was notified Friday that they will lose their jobs at the network.
AZN Television

The channel, led by general manager Rod Shanks, never gained distribution beyond Comcast’s footprint of about 13.9 million homes and also had trouble securing advertising. That was despite efforts to build it into a viable niche network by Comcast, which acquired it from Liberty Media in 2004 and subsequently tweaked programming to be more advertiser-friendly.

The cable operator brought in a management-consulting firm several months ago to assess whether the network could be saved, ultimately deciding to pull the plug.

“AZN Television’s last day of broadcasting will be April 9, 2008,” Comcast said in a statement. “This difficult decision was made after considerable review of the network’s financial situation. Comcast, the network’s parent company, will continue to broadcast additional Asian programming through the International Networks and other independent providers and remains committed to supporting the Asian-American community through programming, civic and cultural events.”

The relative youth and affluence of the Asian-American audience was an attraction for Comcast and its competitors, which included startup cable channel ImaginAsian TV and local independent stations, like KSCI Los Angeles, aimed at that city’s 2.5 million Asians.

The median income of Asian-American households is $55,521, compared with $45,904 for non-Hispanic white households and $33,447 for Hispanic households, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data. And with a median age of 31, the Asian-American population is four years younger than the overall U.S. median age.

Despite those inviting figures, Comcast and its competitors face a couple of significant hurdles for ad sales. The total Asian-American population in the United States, according to the Census Bureau, is 13.5 million -- not an enormous ethnic bloc in a country with 40 million Hispanics. The population is also subdivided into a variety of ethnicities. KSCI, for example, programs in five languages, and many advertisers are reluctant to cut different spots for each one.

Comcast also owns larger cable networks E! Entertainment Television, Style, The Golf Channel, Versus and G4, and several regional sports networks, as well as part of PBS Kids Sprout and TV One.

awww... I used to watch most of the music video shows back when it was the 'International Channel.' I thought that last one 'Music Bang' was pretty meh since they always played random stuff instead of new songs. It was also on re-runs most of the time.

Also, now we dont get to see the Asian Excellence Awards anymore... that was always good for a laugh.

edit: oh yeah, they also had some subbed dramas. I remember seeing Sam Soon and Mars on the channel. I know there were plenty of others. Then on Sunday night was the Japanese programing in which they did play newer things such as Liar Game, First Kiss and Iryu 2... and some talk shows. Too bad the Japaneses stuff was all unsubbed.

Yeah, I used to watch International Channel. I watched Revolution, Korean Music Countdown, that asian comedy show and some other stuff. Then it turned into AZN TV and they got rid of most of their good programming so I stopped watching. They should have left it alone! Maybe they wouldn't be pulling the plug on it then.

awww sad to hear that. I still watch it for Music Bang and some Korean drama (they're playing Coffee Prince right now happy.gif)

But I think they could have had some better programming that had more Asian American stuff since it is (was) "the network for Asian America." But they stopped showing stuff like "popcorn zen" and "cinema azn."

Wow, that's lame. AZN had better subs and video/audio quality than KOAM.

SERIOUSLY. That's how I got into Korea Music because of Revolution and KMC. I miss seeing that one guy who hosts it.
I thought, when they turned it into AZN, it'd be cool but then it was just crappy after that.
Boo =_=;.

yeah they pulled the channel a few weeks ago where i live. i was flipping through the channels and was like "where'd my AZN TV go?!" it's sad that its going away for good because its what got me into Korean music way back when i just happened to come across BoA's "Atlantis Princess" playing on Revolution. i used to look forward to watching it every week too but then like all the good shows (Cinema AZN, Popcorn Zen, STIR, Pop Japan TV) they just disappeared. i will miss you AZN TV!

Not surprising. They stopped airing a lot of good shows and repeated dramas constantly. And it was obvious they had issues with advertising because those ads really sucked. The problem isn't the size of their targetted demographic but their lack of good programming. Oh well, I hope their employees find new jobs soon.

I didn't like AZN TV and I definitely didn't watch it much, but to pull the plug on the one remaining Asian television channel is really sad and unnecessary

i was under the impression that it was already down. i haven't had that channel ever since i moved to california. i know people in SF still have it, but it's been showing lame stuff lately anyway. when they had their korean drama month -- haha my parents were glued to the TV.

to tell you the truth, i never understood their programming choices. are there really more people are interested in thai music videos than korean dramas?

Man, they must've pulled AZN from my cable a while ago...
I lost it a few months ago.

I remember watching a few episodes of MARS and Music Bang! I think I also watched that K-drama "Ruler of Your World" or "As You Like It" when they were airing it....

Too bad though... =/ Aiiyo.

now you guys can go watch ImaginAsian TV........I hosted a mma show there, it's still airing wednesdays at 8, sat at 9

i personally never liked music bang, back when it was still the International Channel, they had korean music countdown hosted by these 2 guys named Eddie and Nam, those guys were hilarious. That countdown show i actually enjoyed.

music show progression:
MVH (music video heaven) - may have been as far back as 2002 when it aired. This music show is what got me into asian pop music. The host even read my request on air for a BoA song. (I have it recorded too! haha). This played both Japanese and Korean MVs

KMC (Korean Music Countdown) -
and
Revolution - I remember these two airing at the same time. Revolution also played both Japanese and Korean Stuff.

I think there was another show that played Chinese/Taiwan? mvs, but it was only once a week. V....something?

I still feel like im missing a show somewhere...

Then the dreaded Music Bang came along when the international channel was renamed to AZN. I didnt like how every other mv was filipino (even though I am too...) and they played random Korean and Japanese MVs. I was mad because it was through the past music shows I was introduced to newer songs/singers. The constant reruns didn't help either.

btw, anyone remember that show 'Stir'... I was actually on one episode, the part when that guy asks people 'on the street' random questions.
