[please also read MY 3rd post, I had some other MGT major only questions smile.gif ]

Hi there!

By the end of the semester, I need to declare my major. I have been thinking about what I'd like to do since before I started college (I am at a 4 year state school). I thought business but there is way too much math and I feel it is too broad to get a good job in.

I recently have been seriously considering management (directed towards business, probably human resources). I know there is some math in obtaining this degree as well but it does not seem as bad as business. I think this is a better bet for me but I was wondering if anyone who is further along in obtaining this degree, or has one already, could give some input. I have not taken any MGT. classes yet, as they all closed too fast and I need my math pre requirements taken care of this semester.

So here are my questions:
what kind of a person should go into management?
how hard are the classes?
how hard is it to find a well paying job?
define well paying if you have a management job (again, in business field or HR, not like manager of a store, that's different)
how much math is really involved?
any other comments too.

I am also considering trying to get my minor in Psychology. Would this be beneficial at all? I can get my minor in Justice and Law if i take 3 more classes but it seems useless w/that since I no longer want anything to do w/JLA. I am also considering a minor in Communication's.

Also any info on Comm. as a major would be appreciated too. Not for Psych.
Hope there isn't a similar thread, I am unable to search...

Thanks!

Hi

Im currently double majoring in Management and Psychology. However I can only give you this much information because I've only been through one semester..

I assume when you say "Management" you are not talking about the general general one which still comprise branches like "Marketing", "Financial accounting" etc. If so, the Management we are referring to here can involve very little or even no maths if you choose the modules well. You can choose to go into the more psychology-related studies such as things like organizational behaviour, organizational effectiveness, leadership in management. If you do modules like marketing management or management science (may be inevitable) you will definitely see some maths. Confront it yeh! Even for your Psychology, you will definitely have to do Statistics for Psychological Research. Maths is really everywhere and anywhere.

Psychology and management can actually complement each other if you decide to specialize in Industrial and Organizational Psychology which is more relevent to the biz industry.

Regarding the level of difficulty, it really depends on hard work. Nothing is too difficult to grasp really.

Hope this helps a lil.

^ thank you so much for the reply smile.gif

I would really like to go into organizational behavior in management, something that is still business like, but in an area where math won't kill me.

But I know I do not want to major in pysch.

I know I can apply to jobs regardless of my major, but I have to declare mine by Summer, which is very nerve wracking! I think I want to do management, but I'm not sure.

So this leads me to asking (which maybe I'll need another post for) for the input of Management Majors. Where are you hoping to go with this degree, how much money are you hoping to make, and what kind of skills do you hope (or if you know for sure) to be using on a daily basis at your future job?

My biggest fear is majoring in something I wind up hating, or worse; not being able to find a job. I do not mean management of like a retail store, to clarify and confirm what the poster said. I can picture myself in a business world, but maybe not the super super business/math aspect.

Any more input? Thanks again so, sooo much!

So here are my questions:
what kind of a person should go into management?

a person who can be a good leader

QUOTE
how hard are the classes?

the handful of OB classes i've taken felt much like psyche classes with a business flavor. [i was a pysche minor when i previously majored in business]

QUOTE

very hard if you're not good at what you do. this is similar with most other fields. if you do your job well, and you take care of your personal interests as well as the company's, then you will get paid more, or you will leave and make more anyways. this question should be irrelevant, and you should be more concerned about whether or not there are opportunities to get paid well. the answer to that would be a big YES

an HR manager can feasibly earn well over 100K if you're placed in a medium to large sized company. also to note, HR manager often times still do some accounting work [manage salaries and budgets related to building/managing organizational structure] as well as keep stats / info on everyone that works in the company.

less math related management are usually team leaders, which can apply to almost any field, whether it's business related [like sales] or engineering, etc. usually, these people don't have an emphasis on management, but are people that moved up within the company, or have strong backgrounds in their specific field and have been hired to guide a group of people.

There are also IT managers who don't work with numbers as much as they do with computers [hardware and software].

i dropped my minor in psyche. was originally in operations management by default because that's where MIS fell into, but later on wanted to get into accounting and finance. ultimately i dropped out and switch majors entirely... but psyche was just something i enjoyed and offered little to my career. [you'd need to apply for certain specific jobs for it to be useful for something more than personal gratification]
