I'm planning on buying a new car sometime at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.
I've had my eyes mainly on the Civic Si or the Mazda 3.
A sporty car with good fuel economy, reliability, and interior is a priority on my list.
I am aware of the Mazda 3 getting a facelift and a power boost for 2009, hopefully for the better.

What are your thoughts on these cars?
I would also appreciate any input about other cars that you may personally like, just as long as they fit the following criteria:

Condition: New
Price: under $22,000
Good Fuel Economy
Reliable
Nice interior/exterior looks and material

Thank you for your help/opinions

They both seem like good choices. If you get the 3, get some RX-8 rims and put them on. I saw a pic somewhere and it looks great.

The Scion tC and the Toyota Matrix are also similar cars you might like. Sporty, hatch, economical, good quality. The tC has been out for a while with only minor changes. Isn't it also due for a face-lift soon?

+1 on the mazda 3 or altima coupe. the SI's (newer civics all around) are fugly imo, they are also not that quick. i would rather get a vw gti than an si, even with as much hate as i have for vws/audis...

Quick enough? They're faster than the mazda3/altima..

I vote for the SI. Looks great, inside/out. Just be aware that the seats are pretty stiff in terms of comfort.

My friend has a Mazda 3 and she absolutely loves it. You should definitely get it.

I'm leaning towards the Si right now...
It seems to be the most appealing to me in looks, fuel economy, reliability, AND performance.

I've heard of the widespread 6speed transmission problem that Honda is working on right now though...
Hopefully they will have it fixed by the time I get my car.
