i think everyone here knows the most typical korean surnames: kim, lee, park, etc. but i was checking out the korean surname article on wikipedia just now and was surprised to see how many surnames i've never seen before. for example, wikipedia shows that 18 south koreans had the last name sobong in 2001. other unusual surnames include (i'm picking some at random) hoo, po, pil, tan, jeup (four koreans), zeng, changgok, hwangbo, dongbang (haha), gangjeon, ae, sip, bi, mangjol, oegeum, yo, mi, kyo, and roi. do you or anyone you know have these kinds of surnames? i'm thinking my family is so boring now hehe

(also i imagine this topic has been created in the past; if the recent past, then please let me know)

I think a few of those names were created by foreigners who got Korean citizenship and started families. GangJeon (岡田) is Okada in Japanese, so those 51 people with that name may have Japanese roots. (I'm not really sure) ^^;

Kinda off topic, but I think it would be cool if Korean last names were extended by adding the clan name. For example, Kim from Gimhae would be Gimhaegim and Lee from Jeonju would be Jeonjuri. XD It would definitely create more surnames and clear up confusion between all the Kims, Lees, Parks. Oh, me and my stupid fantasies about names.

and first post is probably right... alot of them are probably japanese last names... the affects of enslavement and rape in korea 50 years ago o.0 (im not bad mouthing japan.. just stating the truth :/)

i mean.. it happened in america too right? there are no "true american last names" unless you count native american ones... and alot of african americans have surnames that originally belonged to caucasians :/

i don't know any korean with a two-syllable last name. i was wondering if they're ethnically korean. i guess sometimes they are.

and i agree, it would be cool to add the clan name to the last name. my last name is really common, but the clan name is actually not that common. so i'd be in favor of doing something to set me apart from the scads of kims out there.

^yea...me too..my last name is kang...and i know a lot of kangs..but i'm not sure if they've got the same clan name as me..i only know one other person..besides my family...i'm a jinjoo kang..anyone else here a jinjoo kang? =]

actually i know someone with the last name cha and another one hong. if those are considered unusual

the weirdest one ive seen was spelled rheu which is pronounced yoo.
