Listening To Music Too Much? any possible NEGATIVE psychological effects?

So we all love music. I'm sure 100% of fellow soompiers would agree with me on THAT. And we've all probably heard from somewhere, sometime, that music has a therapeutic effect on us (well, CLASSICAL music, to be exact.... but oh well... DBSK is pretty good too. XDXD)

But I'm one of those people who has my earphones on 24/7. No seriously. Even when I'm asleep my ipod is on. It's also on when I'm eating, doing hw, etc.

In case this is useful info when answering my question, I listen to asian pop mostly. So there are loud songs like DBSK's Free Your Mind, and then there are soft slow ones like those cpop ballads. I also listen to OSTs, which are soft instrumental music.

Has anyone ever heard of any possible negative effects TOO much music could have on us? My mom said that if I don't give my ears (and mind) SOME silence, I'll gradually have a shorter attention span; I don't want to believe that, but lately I HAVE been feeling rather ADHD.

Please share your thoughts!

ps. I hope this is in the right section. I reasoned that mental health is also health. happy.gif

Oh, and obviously if the music is always loud, then that's bad for your ears, but I care more about the mental/emotional/spiritual aspect. smile.gif My volume is usually on the lowest anyways, which is a good thing.

actually at night where there's minimum sound, you're ear hair heals itself, i'm not talking about the hair we see on our bodies, but a special hair that makes the vibration go to your brain. but if there's sound that keeps going than the ears won't heal, therefore you'll end up loosing your hearing at an early age

Yes the sensory hair cells 'recover' by standing on end again after a sound wave passes.

I do think that having earphones plugged into your ears almost 24/7 is bad regardless of the sound level.
Keeping the ear/auditory canal covered up like that doesn't allow earwax/cerumen to move back and forth normally.
Maybe moisture can build up easily so you could develop ear infections?! O__O

I would give my ears a rest for at least half a day.. (((d^__^cool.gif))

Anyway this is just my opinion.

^ Yup. Hm... I've heard that always listening to music and other things through headphones/earphones increases the chance of getting brain cancer? o-o I don't know, but um, they said something about too much radiation(?) going to your brain is very bad. >_>

I've read reports before stating that having earphones in your ears 24/7 or for long periods of time can make a person lose heaing at an earlier stage compare to those that are always hanging in bars/clubs etc

wow.. like a while ago i was watching the chinese news with my parents and they said having earphones on while listening to music for more than an hour is not really good towards your ears. I forgot what the damage was, but im thinking probably causes deaf?

Now a days i try to listen to it less with ear phones. Maybe just like a stereo.
Have a nice day!

True. ^^

It's not good to listen to music all the time. Your hearing will be effected sooner or later. Try to avoid listening to any music especially during sleep time. Your brain need rest, so do your ears.

Plus, if you keep putting your earphone all the time, the bacteria in your ears will increase much more faster and it's not good for the health of your ear.

Sure, listening to music is all nice, but your hearing is much more important. Don't over used it. ^^ You'll regret it later.

i have noticed that, now, after doing what you are (listening to my mp3 LITEREALLY 24/7), if i dont have my mp3 or it runs out of battery and i cant listen to my music, i will go INSANE. seriously. i just start pms-ing or something O_o

The effects don't happen instantly. If you constantly have earbuds on in your ear, effects might start to come in when you get older.

It's really bad to fall asleep with earphones plugged in your ears with music!!

Well if you care about future consequences, stop listening to music before you go to sleep. .____.

music is my life. I always tune in whenever I go out because I dont like to listen or pay attention to things going on around me. Just yesterday my coworker say she always see me going to class but I always have my ears plugged so she doesn't say hi.

I listen music like 6 hours day....depend on where I am. If i'm out the whole day then it'll be on the whole day. I don't care about the hearing thing. Life is now or never anyway. just my opinion. It's like how ppl say eating this or that is not healthy, but sigh you never know what's gonna happen the next minute. If worse coms worst you'll regret what you haven't done.

Um...I don't think listening to music too much would have any psychological effect on any person. Music is sound, therefore, you can't just suddenly get ADHD. You will ruin and impair your hearing for sure with those earphones 24/7, but you won't develop any psychological/mental disorder.

Hmm~ I'm always listening to music, too. Even during class whenever I can. It's just not right without music. And well, my attention span has gotten a bit shorter. But I dunno. I will never view music as bad for my health. mad.gif

Well, I think you can try and take this one test or hearing ringtone:
http://www.ultrasonic-ringtones.com/

I think the minimum range to hear is.. 14 Hz, but idk.
But yeah, listening to TOO much music can make you loose your sense of hearing the small little sounds quicker.
I'm currently semi hiatus at the moment due to school.
*still pm me please, although it might take awhile to reply!
