Well so some of you may know that Windows 7 is the next OS after Windows Vista. I really need (more like want) a new laptop for school. I have a desktop and it's quite a hassle. The release date for W7 should be around late 09 to 2010. However, my friends think it would come out within this year (like it did for Windows XP after Windows ME). They think its only prolonging the date so sales of vista won't decrease (marketing strategy). My desktop is new...comes with vista. Anyways my question is should I wait for the end of year to see if W7 comes out since I am not in that big of an urge to get a laptop or should I get one cause your guess is that it won't come out till 2011 (like some reviews I read says)?

If you have no immediate need for it, it doesnt hurt to wait. Prices for technology always drops, i think..

One piece of advice... and one question...

Are you in college?

Because if you are then STAY WITH THE MOST POPULAR OS FOR THAT SCHOOL!!!
For example, my school used XP in the Fall quarter and ALOT of the students had Vista.
It was pretty tough for them to do online HW and stuff because some stuff weren't
Vista compatible. Some students even downgraded to XP because of this.
But it's Winter quarter now and I think they've finally upgraded to Vista.

Lucky for me I had XP or I would've been in big doo doo. sweatingbullets.gif

For computer tech, its always better to wait. however, if you need a laptop, then get one now. the thing about the new windows is that there are going to be bugs upon release. i would wait it out 6-12months after it is released before getting this new OS. and yeah, it may even be delayed so...why wait so long crazy.gif

Realistically... Windows 7 release dates are all completely rumors and I seriously doubt you're going to see a release until at least 2010+. More likely 2012+. If by some miraculous chance that we do see some kind of release in the 2010~ timeframe, I would say it would be more like a "2nd release" of Vista (sort of like the way the server OS are following the R2 releases after the initial RTM). Regardless, I think it would be silly of you to even consider waiting for the post Vista release of Windows. It's no secret that development of Windows 7 (as it is called now) has been in works even before Vista's RTM and this is the way it's always been since practically the beginning of Windows. Everyone starts to speculate about the "next" release once something comes out. This isn't really anything to get excited about nor is it something anywhere near in the future.

It's not a good idea to get the newest operating system right when it's released.

i am a college student. i am mostly likely getting a laptop next school yr (september). i know its better to wait. however, it's sorta a hassle at times though i can endure the annoyance. I just don't want to get a laptop now though in case something new is coming out within the year. i mean waiting for 2009-2010 is quite a long time so i might just get one now but if it does have a short shelf life like windows me, then I would hate myself for getting one now. however, since there's news about sp1 for vista, it's most likely that the vista is here to stay for a little longer right?

I can't imagine Microsoft wanting to move so quickly to Windows 7, given Vista's only been out for a little over a year. Perhaps in the next year, there will be more concrete info on Windows 7 as opposed to just rumors at the moment. Still, I'd be suprised to see W7 out in '09. Even if you wait for W7, you'd still have to worry about compatibility issues just like Vista currently, which would prolong the already long wait, and by the time W7 comes around Vista will have made improvements so it'll be stable enough for most users. I understand that having the latest version would be nice, but as those still running XP can probably attest, having a stable version can be just as good.

What exactly will Windows 7 bring? And why did they even call it Windows 7? It seems more fitting to be called Windows 19 than 7...

So many questions... No answers...

I wouldn't touch Vista until it has been completely accepted as a standard in most businesses around the world.

I'm not up for it. Vista doesn't look good besides taking up space in the hard drive. I still love my XP Professional. I like things simple.

lol, some people didnt even upgrade to vista yet (some even downgraded)
im sure that microsoft is not rush to release a new OS
its better to just get a laptop now and then upgrade whenever it comes around.

well actually, "windows 7.0" is just a version name. run command prompt and type in: ver
you'll see that:
windows 3.1 = the windows before windows 95...cant remmeber the name
windows 5.1.2600 = windows xp sp2
windows 6.0 = vista

they wont give "windows 7" a marketable name til closer to release...

i didnt upgrade yet tongue.gif although i plan to later in the year with a new computer. i agree with your idea about just getting a laptop now too. if you need it, get it. why wait.

and for the record, MS did say that they plan to release a new OS more frequently than before with XP. (every 3 years?)
