Hey so my friend and I decided to do tennis. We're just beginners and we take lessons together from her dad who used to play pro.
So my question is, do you guys have any drills/techniques to help us get better?

Practice your form with you friend on the court. Have good rallies. Practice all your shots together. I have to work on returns so I have my friend serve to me. I'll working on my anticipation, going forward and following through. I still have A LOT to work on. Tennis is a life sport. Enjoy it!

Um, so you're taking lessons from an ex-pro...wouldn't you ask him?

I think you should start by learning how to hold the racket (as in learning the grips for the basic shots like forehand/backhand) and then work on stance and hitting the ball. biggrin.gif

I watched the Williams sisters DVD. The way they practiced was they had someone chuck the balls at them and they would hit left, right, left, right. (like, i mean, forehand, backhand... continuous). They used old tennis rackets and chucked them as hard as they could to improve the strength of their serves. so pretend your serving, but without a ball. Chuck it. Dont use a nice new racket though.
I tried it, it does help a fair bit. And practice your breathing. I know that sounds so weird, but like, it does help. If your breathing gets forced its really hard. Also practice filling your court. So no empty areas that would make you vulnerable. Wow, i hope that helps. Tennis is a great sport.

Work on tricepts, back, shoulder, legs >_>

Keep your head still when you hit the ball, always keep your eye on it til the very point of contact.
Use good form, hit slow and controlled until you can like do it everytime
then gradually swing harder. Its all about consistancy and accuracy!

Goodluck(:

i wouldn't say hit as hard as you can, because usually if you have the grip wrong from the start, the ball will go flying out. so hit at a not so fast pace because you may lose sight of the ball.
look at the ball as it is coming. also if the ball feeds (when he hits them to you) are too high, it might be a problem as well so timing is everything.

yes work on grip first. if you have a bad grip that'll ruin everything because you'll get used to it and everything goes down hill...
practice hitting the ball with a good form rather than hitting it hard. As long as you have good form and are hitting it over the net a majority of times with good form then you're a good beginner.

learn your serve! practice that a lot because usually people(like me...heheh ^^;;) don't practice as much and it becomes a weakpoint which is bad because serve is very very very important. (btw slice serve is my favorite and is pretty good)

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO HAVE FUN THOUGH! DON'T GET TOO FRUSTRATED OR YOU'LL SUCK LIKE HECK!

My only tip that I have is to learn the basics. You're going to have to get over bad habits that you have. Starting from footwork to how you start and finish each stroke is vital. Once you start to have a really bad habit, it's going to take a lot of time and frustration to get over it.

-jump rope. A LOT!
-do some running. this helps you from running out of breath
-find some intermediate footwork exercises. that's my worse thing right now. foot work- dry.gif
-do some suicides. NOT LITERALLY. suicides means to touch one end of the court with the tip of your fingers,
then run back and touch the other end. Those things are miracles in helping you gaining endurance.

Don't forget that timing is very important!

If you cannot time your shots, you won't hit it sweetly enough.
