Well I am about to get a new PC but I am debating to go with the E8400 or the Q6600? The E8500 is also in this but it is a little more expensive then the other 2. The Q6600 is good for multitasking but the E8400 is better for games and some programs because those programs only utilize 1-2 cores still.

If I wait a bit more, would the new 45nm Q9x00 be better? The new Q9350 or the Q9450? I heard the Q9350 will be cheap to replace the Q6600.

I am a guy who will play some games and also multitask a lot as well.

To go along with the CPU will be

8800GT/8800GTS G92/9600GT (Still deciding)
500gb HD
2gb of PC6400 DDR2 ram

Would a 500W power supply be enough for all of these or should I go with a more powerful one? The E8x00 uses less power then the quads so would going with the E8x00 be a better choice if I was to go with the 500w PSU?

I have the quad core 6600, 8800GT 1gb card, 2gb pc6400DDR2 and the 750GB HD on a 500watt power supply. I WOULD recommend a higher wattage supple if you get anything higher, since 500 was minimum requirements for me, and is the first thing I will upgrade soon. BTW, the setup is quick as heck (in comparison to my 4 year old computer -.-;;;).
I want to be the one in front of you...just like that guy.

Well my current computer is a
P4 3.2GHZ Presscott HT 541
1gb of DDR-400 ram
240gb HD
6600gt XFX
and is currently running on a 420W PSW

This computer was upgraded 3 years ago and is starting to become slow in games and some programs.

My even older one was a

P4 3.0ghz northwood
512mb of DDR-400 ram
120gb HD
FX5200
which now belongs to my dad.

I am also looking at getting a new 24in Widescreen monitor and looking at the GW2400 from Benq, the Acer 241, or the Samsung 245B.

Definitely get the E8 now or wait for the Q9 if you want quad core. Q9 >>>> Q6600 simply due to 45nm.

A good quality 500w would be more than enough. I run an old amd 4400+ (which consumes more power), 4gb ram, 4 hard drives drives in raid 10, and a old 6800gt on a Enermax 500W PS. In addition to the quality of your PS, I'd also consider how old it is because it may not have all the connectors or output requirements for your new mobo.

500W psu from a good brand is definitely enough

if u dont want to oc then u should get the e8400. better for games.
multitasking ... duh ...
what kind of programs?
most programs still dont profit from 4 cores
IPB Image ... yeah ^^

Just wait a few months for Penryn to be fully released. Even better if you can wait for Nehalem.
Also, I hear that AMD's releasing their Fusion chips in 2009 (same as Nehalem). I'm a diehard Intel fan so I'll probably stick with Intel... But I do want to see what both CPUs have to offer.....

But as of now... I don't think we'll need them since little or no applications are written to fully support SSE4... or 4.1 (Wolfdale)... at least not yet.

Nehalem supposedly will not have an FSB (instead replaced by Intel QuickPath Interconnect)... Something to look forward too...
