Okay. =x So in Law class recently my teacher brought up course selections and we started talking about Universities... =x
I'm currently in Gr. 11, and I'm a Canadian student so I'd prefer if I got responses regarding Canadian Uni's (because I'll probably be going to an Ontario Uni) but can I ask what people have heard or know about the bell-curves that certain Uni's might do?
My teacher said that U of T life sciences is notorious for bell-curving your mark down... and that's something I don't need. xD;;; I plan on going into Life Sciences, and I'd prefer going to a Uni where my mark isn't bumped down just... because. o____O;
She said her kinesieology (sp?) program at York bell-curved up all the time though. xD;;;

hmm... i'm in uni and from what I experience, bell curves can either help you, or destroy you.

Since I'm studying at UofT (first year
) I might as well tell you what I know...
What your teacher says about bell-curving at UofT is partly true and partly untrue...did he/she ever explain why grades were bell-curved? Marks are bell-curved down if the total class average is higher than they had expected of the course after an assignment/test. The marks that are expected in first-year courses are in the low 60s to mid 70s, so if your class happens to have a lot of smart people and get a grade higher than that (say average was 90), it's much more likely to have your marks curved down. Don't know why they do it, but it happens. I heard that this is done because apparently they can only allow a certain number of people to get certain marks (not 100% sure...doesn't sound too reasonable but that's UofT for you). With that said, if grades are much lower than their expected average, it's more likely to see your marks curved up. I haven't seen bell-curving of marks in my classes so far, with the exception of one class (Bio) as one test was poorly written. I think one test in my math class was bell-curved as well (up) but I don't remember...
