interesting topic....two weeks ago i was reading a book called 'House of the Scorpions' by Nancy Farmer and it's about a kid who is a clone of this old guy who is like 150 years old...and he thought he was being loved and all by this old dude because they were practically the same person...except that that kid was the 9th clone and he was just going to be used for transplant.....and ever since reading that book....i've had mixed views on cloning....in the book...one of the characters mentioned that a human and a clone were the same thing and something something....i'll have to find the quote later...but then...i know it's not true....it got me thinking...could they ever be the same thing? i mean....the only difference i can find so far is that a human is born naturally, by a human mother whereas a clone is like...experimental and not born naturally, i guess naturally meaning by God or something....don't get me wrong....i don't know much about cloning cus i've avoided the topic...but i guess this just gets me thinking...sorry to ramble on...does this help at all>?

okay...i don't know if i'm helping at all...seriously....you're asking for opinions and i read the book...and i'm asking you questions...but anyway...if someone were to clone you or whatever...would you have the same characteristics/personalities? because *going back to the book* the kid, his name is Matt, whilst the old dude is El Patron...well....would you have the same personality? i don't think so though, because the kid Matt was quite different from the old man...i guess it'd just depends on the time frame you're living in....hm....yeah....sorry to bore...but...if there were to ever be a clone of myself or someone else..i'd think it'd be freaky...of course i'd think it'd be unnatural...but....i guess we'll find out what mother nature will do to us if we do start cloning people, right?

EWWWWWW !!!! .... so tats what i meant by unbalance ecosystem ...

but if really there is a chance to meet my clone i will be like wow !!! really ~~

There's a lot of different aspects to cloning than just creating another you. I mean, that's what most people think of it as, but there's things like using your DNA to clone another organ - at least, that's what some scientists are trying to do. If that's successful, I think it has a lot of potential, but only if they can perfect it.

Hmm, that book Mardi09 shared seems like an interesting read, haha. Kind of creepy though, don't know. Anyways, I'm against cloning despite the potential it has to save a lot of lives. To me... cloning takes away the value of our lives and our body. If we can simply say that we can ruin our organs and just get it cloned then we take our lives for granted. At the same time even though for some people it can truly be a life or death situation, I would take the risk of them not being able to live... it seems cold to say, but we all eventually die, so what's the point of trying to prolong your life? Cloning just kind of creeps me out in general because it kind of makes us God or whatever higher power out there people believe. I think it gives us too much control.

Human cloning is weird to me too. I think each human being should be unique and there should be no other of us, for any reason. It's kind of cruel to make clones so you can use them as transplant organs later on. Cloning is just a really controversial topic though... depends on what your morals and ethical beliefs whatever are right?

Haha, I did a project on this last year. xD

I think genetics is an interesting topic scientifically, but I don't approve of it. o____O; I mean, think about the way things would be if genetics was allowed in the world - on humans, nonetheless. The beginning process would be on humans... who's going to volunteer themselves? How will you choose who to (attempt to) genetically alter?
And if it works, then what? You can genetically alter your child. Who will it be avaliable for? The rich -and- the poor? IMO, it'll cause a bigger rift between the different social classes.

On the other hand though, genetic engineering is doing wonders medically <3 They're playing around with pig organs, I think, since it's similar to ours, to make organs that could hopefully be transplanted into people someday. =) Hopefully we don't get any cross-overs of any diseases, but that's a different story. ^^;

I think people should just leave it alone, though. ._.; Because it's not really something you can control. Or should be able to.
keep the faith

Just because you clone something doesn't mean it won't have any emotion haha. Basically, cloning is the same thing as an identical twin - same genes, different .. personality sort of not really. Does that make sense? It's the same concept anyway. People see it as unethical because it's a scientifically engineered human, which seems .. just .. "too inhuman."

I understand what you mean by messing up the balance of nature, but I'm sure cloning entire human beings will probably only be an option for women who cannot give birth, or for couples who cannot get pregnant. It'll be like an alternative to invitro (sp?) fertilization, with surrogate mothers and all.

But yeah. Cloning doesn't always involve whole humans. You can clone nerves, blood, livers, lungs, etc. Things dying people need. If soemone is going to die soon, wouldn't it be better to save them with a cloned organ (which won't take too long to create) than waiting for months or years for a organ donor? It would save so many lives. sad.gif

I don't know how recent this is, but they've actually found another alternative to cloning (since people find it unethical that they trash the embryos afterwards). They've started "reprogramming" cells. Uhh I don't have the news article with me, but from what I can recall, they can take a cell and basically morph it into any other cell that they need. I forget the gist of it. D:

I personally am totally for cloning. smile.gif
Sure, there will be a few defects at first but I'm sure scientists will tweak it all out in the end. ^^;
