alright, so i'm a freshman at RISD (Rhode island school of design). at first i was ecstatic about coming here, thinking it was going to be a blast! nahh..

i managed to survive through first semester and my winter session and am going to start my second week of spring tomorrow.. nowadays, i feel like all of this isn't for me.. a part of me wants to go to a normal college and experience what being a normal freshman college student feels like. Today at dinner, my friend said that it feels like we're in a bubble here in Providence and how we're missing out on such a huge part of college life.. this being mainly social reasons.. Truer words have never been spoken. Basically, once we get here, it seems like we've been tossed into the real world - we feel the real pressures of meeting deadlines while making your projects look GOOD.

I *think* i want to continue art as my career.. but even though ive come this far, a part of me keeps saying how risky it is. ughh, this really sucks.

I want to transfer to somewhere near NYC... so the schools i know there are Pratt, SVA, Parsons, FIT. However, pratt is the only school with my major (industrial design) and what if i feel the same way over there?

anybody have any similar experiences that can help?

thanks...

my school is small.
and people say that im missing out on the college life.
what is a real college life?

to me, EDUCATION is more important than where you're at.
if you get good education, then it's all okay.

dont worry about what people want, it's about what you want.
if you dont feel happy there, then you can transfer.
but you have to do things for the right reason.
you cant transfer just because you think you're missing out on the real world.
that reason wont get you a degree.

and true. that's college life.
did you know what you were getting yourself into when you enter college?
college IS about reading, deadlines, and doing your best.

if you want anything else than that,
or if you expected a fast slide through college,
you should consider what you're ready for and what you are capable of.
if you can't surivive the deadlines and pace of college,
that's what real life is about.

just like a job.
you have to be on time and do your best, or you'll get fired.

good luck. take care.
think about what is best for you.
real happiness, not something that you 'imagine'.
take care.

lol college is all about deadlines and reading as itrayya mentioned! blush.gif

and this "college life" thing is completely superficial! I go to such a huge university that it's impossible to know anyone so the only way to mingle with people is to be part of an organization or on your residence floor!

I think movies depict university lives as just parties and lots of fun but when you're not studying you're sleeping or eating hahha! so if its real life or not that I dunno haha

not sure what you're talking about when you say 'normal college life'
what's normal to you, and how is it different from what you have right now?

I am studying art as my major also smile.gif I understand what you mean when you say taking art as a career path is risky >.> But, it's the only thing I understand how to do well lol. To me college life is making a big to do list everyday and always catching up with homework, going to class, and studying for tests. Lots and lots of deadlines and just managing it best you can. I barely have time for a social life... I guess that's normal college life?

for Art ppl... i totally understand,, some of my friends are studying ART as a major and it's really hard to see them and talk to them.. when i leave the room for some mintues and i know they just came, i get back to see they aren't there, maybe classes, projects....etc

it's really hard to see them but they really love what they are doing~ they have soooooo many things to do more than i do in Business major.. and i see how much work they got.. so i can understand what you are going through...

maybe college to you is hard to continue in, it might be also hard to have fun.. but still you have to find something interesting there and you will love it...

My ART friends said that they used to hate coming to the university and spend their time there, but they said that when they meet friends who share the same interest [not related to ART] and spend their time together, they don't like to go home anymore... but being with friends is also nice and you should manage your time between College and Social life..

College is Fun when there is something fun to do there.. and boring when you spend your whole time just learning, writing assignments, projects....etc

You might think of changing your college, but don't you think it's really a good one since you learn a lot , you think a lot and you do so many things... My uni is sooo boring when it comes to study,.. i go to classes and do nothing.. i have some works to do here and there, but not much... I haven't ever went through a serious acadmic life, but it was all boring and i learn nothing new.. maybe the pressure you are having now is because of that feeling of not having enough time to spend with friends ..etc, but still if you can manage your time well, you will find that time to watch movies, be with friends and do lots of things...

I disagree... American colleges are not only reading, deadlines, doing your best -- but also social contacts. Do you know that teachers are more inclined to give letters of recommendations to students who participate in community organizations?

This is like a stepping stone between high school and the "real world" outside of the educational system. You have to juggle so many things at once so you aren't left stranded once you go into a career!

OP... you're only into your first year of college. If you don't like your current school now, then make sure to change schools before junior year. You don't have to even keep the same major -- some colleges (like state) will allow transfer of credit if you want the experience of stereotypical college life. It depends, but you have to make your choices quick.
