You'd probably be better off with a new Rebel XT which is $380 now. ($433 with the kit lens)
The XT and XTi aren't very different from each other.
Although the XTi does have around 10 megapixels, the image sensors are pretty similar, if not the same. So i don't think there would be much improvement in image quality.
The downside to the XT is that there's no sensor cleaner. But if you're only going to have one lens, you probably won't get much dust on your image sensor in the first place...
Another thing... the bigger screen on the XTi will probably take more out of your battery life as well.
hope that helps.

^ xt uses 7 point focus while xti uses 9 point, which is faster and more accurate. to a beginner, this makes little difference, but once you start using it a lot, that difference can really help, especially when taking action shots.

^batteries that uses AA batteries are a pain in the butt
i know this isn't helping much, but a friend of mine bought both her desktop computer and laptop from a factory refurbished, and let's just say she spends more time fixing them than actually using them.

How are AA batteries a pain in the butt? They're a little heavier and bulkier but nothing beats the convenience and universal availability of AA batteries.
As for factory refurb'ed stuff, I hear good things about Canon's factory refurb stuff.
One argument I've heard before, is that since factory refurb means that they've been individually QC'ed they might even reduce the chance you get a defective unit. LOL Personally, I wouldn't be averse to buying refurb if there was a significant discount

yea... most of the time, this seems to hold true when buying used canon stuff from reputable sellers. the only issue, if any, would be the shutter. unfortunately, there's no way to determine the mileage on the camera, and you can only trust that it wasn't used enough to break the shutter after only a few thousand more actuations
