If you've ever read any of my posts, you know that I seriously want to attend UCI (University of California, Irvine).
I'm from Mississippi and I've practically lived here my entire life. I told my parents, and of course, the are
dead set against it for practical reasons such as, health care, job and monetary issues. I don't come from an affluent family either. They also feel that its too unrealisitc, because when my mother went to Tennessee State for her first year, she said that she couldn't do it alone. I'm not her and we're too different people. I'm more independent.

I really want to go to UCI and anytime that either one of us brings it up, we end up in a screaming match. It even got so
far as for my step-dad to say that I'll end up selling (insert lady part here) if I go out there. I ended up cursing him out and slamming the phone. They don't believe that I'm mature enough (I've proven that I can live on my own, when I stayed at Ole Miss for about a month). She's even allowing me to apply to go to Nanjing, China this summer. I know that if I end up going to ICC, Northeast or whatever, it'll be like going to high school all over again, except I have to shell out huge dollars this time. It wouldn't be beneficial for me to stay here, because of the major that I want to obtain and I know that if I don't get out of my comfort zone as soon as possible, I'll end up being dependant on my mother into my late 30s *shutters*

However, I can't convince them that this would be good for me. What do I do? Not bring it up? What?

Well, it is immature if you can't settle it without shouting and cursing. Sometimes you can't get everything you want and you have to make sacrifices; that's part of growing up. Moreover, going to Irvine is seriously expensive for out of state students. Tuition is almost $30,000 and that's without counting room and board. You could possibly be paying up to $40,000 a year. Just the tuition is almost the cost of some private schools including room and board. Your parents are probably the ones paying for your college education aren't they? I don't think they want to pay that much. Even if you say you're going to pay it yourself... well that means you're either going to have to get a good job or you already have money.

On the other hand, you should just apply if you haven't already. It's really hard for out of state students to get in; if you did already then you're pretty lucky. If you can get in, maybe you can persuade them to let you go; it is a pretty good school. Or, you can go to an in-state school for two years and then transfer to Irvine or go to Irvine for graduate school. Shrug. You should tell your parents that they need to let you go and let you be independent and deal with your own problems if you really do want to go out of state and grow up.

I haven't seen your previous posts about it before (but again, I don't visit this section that often). Why do you really want to go to UCI?

I did want to go, because of their Chinese and education program. I want to be a Chinese
Language teacher, but I've looked over my other options and I found that
some of the universities in Mississippi have good programs too.

I've also realized that even with scholarships and financial aid, I still can't afford to
go.

I think the best option is to first spend two years at a college/university that's within your state. Slowly prove to your parents that you're fully capable of taking care of yourself. Maybe find a job and save up money so you can offer to pay for some of your tuition. This way your parents don't have to let go right away; they can slowly adjust to it.
