Im currently attending a community college in CA, and will transfer to SDSU in fall 09 as a junior. Im major in Business Administration. Believe it or not, I dont really know what BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION actually means, for instance what do they actually do???Right now Im just taking Accounting classes and some lab works. I understand that there are many division in business such as Accounting, Finance, Financial Services, Real Estate, Information Systems, Management, or Marketing. But i have no clue which one i should pursue further. If anyone is in the same major or have this kind of experience plz give me some advise.

Thank you !!!

why dont you look up each one, see what they're all about, and then move on with deciding one that you 'think' is good for you? smile.gif

Um, there's really no way to help you because all the majors in Business Administrations are completely different. Either research, as watcher suggested, or go talk to an advisor about your interests and have them give you some guidance.

For me, I'm in information systems and I love it. But I hate other majors like Accounting & Real Estate. Those courses are just too boring for me. Also reflect how you feel w/your current business classes. Do you like them? Do you understand them?

You can probably go to the SDSU website and look under each to see what kind of classes is required for each to see what you'll be learning under each concentration.

I'm a business student, and at my school we have to take courses in each discipline then pick one subject area to concentrate in as a senior, I'm probably double concentrating in finance and international business. I hope to get into global financial markets and currency exchange.

For the other majors:

Accounting: unless you double it with something else, you usually become an accountant. I have some friends who double it with finance to give them a better edge in getting banking jobs but most accounting kids at my school end up working for a Big 4 accounting firm.
Finance: You can go into corporate finance, investment banking, and many other things.
Financial Services: more of internal finance stuff I think
Real Estate: prepares you to get into the real estate business, working with property and financing real estate
Information Systems: for people who want to get into the tech side, work flows between businesses, business people, and how they function with technology
Management: no one I know really does this, its pretty broad....
Marketing: for people who want to go into sales, brand management, marketing, advertising, etc.

I can't really describe everything about each and their job opportunities, so you're probably going to have to do a lot of your own research, or talk to an advisor.

There's really no way for us to tell you which one to chose cause all of those majors are specifically different. It depends on what interest you! My brother was in business administration and is now double-majoring in accounting and marketing. He's mainly interested to advertising, how to sell, etc. HOWEVER - He seriously hated economics, which is also a part in business, from what I heard. I could agree with that cause I hate my macro class. haha so yeah, it depends on what you like! If you like math and all that haaaard stuff, go with accounting or finance. If you like sales, then go with marketing. There's so many different options. The sky's the limit.

Don't worry! I felt the same way you did when I transfered to CSULB.
Although you have to declare a concentration/major when transferring,
the introductory upper division GE courses that they offer will cover almost
all the areas in Business Administration (ie Marketing, International Business, Finance, etc).
So you kinda still have an 'extra semester' to think about what you really wanna
do as you take the upper GE courses. Once you kinda get a feel on what are your strengths & weaknesses,
you can always declare & change your concentration/major if necessary.

I was a Finance major but when I took an upper division GE course
in Finance, I decided that it was not for me. Now I'm a Business Management
with a minor in Child Development & Korean smile.gif . It's based all on trial & error.
You just need to explore your horizons to see what you're good at.
Anyways, hopefully I was helpful ... haha good luck smile.gif

if you are planning to OPEN and maintain a business, i'd say management/entrepreneurship, not marketing.

Marketing is more about selling a product and listening to customers...

I'm majoring in International Business, with a concentration in Marketing. Marketing is not really something you can use to BUILD your own business and make it big, Marketing is more like just selling a product.

^^yeah what baoi said. If you are thinking about opening a business or running on, definately entrepreneurshi or management. I go to the UW and I know from the people in bschool doing ent, they acutally have projects where they need to START their own small business. Sounds really interesting and I think it'd be helpful.
