How Easily Do You Let People Borrow Your Stuff?

For example:
I let a friend borrow a paperback book.
Not only did she give it to me WAY after she was done using it,
all the corners were bent and damaged.
I can honestly say that I rarely come across people who are good borrowers who:
-return it after they're done using whatever I let them borrow
-return it in the condition it was given to them
-doesn't try to keep it for themselves
It irritates me because I'm doing them a favor and I get crap in return,
and it's not like I'm going to make them sign a contract or anything..
Yes, there are accidents and people forget,
but I think I can tell the difference between people who are careless about other people's goods and those who do care.
Now, I think twice before I let people borrow my stuff.
Am I the one who feels this way?

If I let guys borrow my stuff, I want collateral.
If I let girls borrow my stuff, I don't expect anything back, but I warn them like 100x not to damage my stuff or I'll go nuts.
I admit, when someone lends me books or CD's, I usually end up damaging them...

I think if someone borrows something, they should make the effort to keep it clean and bring it back, and not make me come get it.

So yeah. I try not to lend stuff, unless it's to a close friend.

I hate being mean too.
So I just let them borrow it
And I pester them.
Like
MAKE SURE YOU GIVE IT BACK OR ESLE. D<
But what I hate most
Is when you borrow lik, 25 cents from someone
And they're pestering you to pay them back.
><; It's just 25 cents. D;

Right now though, I let my friend borrow my set of books; and this was months ago. I still don't have it back T___T.
I don't really like borrowing things off other people, even if it's just a rubber during class.
If i really needed something from someone else, I'd actually make an effort to take care of it, after all they were kind enough to let me borrow it.

Unless they/re family or REALLY REALLY close with me.
But it also depends on what it is as well.
It's just that I really hate it even if it's just with pens and stuff and they don't even bother asking and just take it. Even my close friends and I ask each other. It's just politeness.

Total stranger to close friend, I'll let them borrow it. Friends I can let borrow for whole days, like pens etc. Strangers I tend to get them back after a short while.
