I don't know too much about feet...
but when I went to the foot doctor they said it was because my feet get warm really easily.
Thus, causing it to sweat and dry out easily. Causing the breakages and yucky peeling.
My suggestion would be to go out and by some foot powder before you wear socks
and wear cotton socks, or socks that help your feet breath easier than regular socks.

and if you've had this problem since you were little, the symptoms would be profound by now that you would be pretty sick. (if you've had the condition since you were a kid til now and it was never treated)
so its probably not that... but you could always go to a doctor to make sure. you can't self medicate if you have a thyroid disorder.
i have pretty dry, chapped feet from living in flip flops 24/7
so i put on lotion right after a shower and then i put on socks.
you can try burts bee's foot cream. its made with coconut oil and pepperment and its almost like a balm, super moisurizing for your feet!
