Fd Rx7 need to clear up some ambiguities

I just want to clear up a few things in my mind about this car.
1. Is it actually unreliable like everyone says it is? I know people are saying the engine shouldnt have been tt because that created a lot of heat which in return blew out the seals but isnt there a way to fix that?
2. When they stopped making the FD in 2002, did they ever fix the heat problem?
3. how is the mpg for this car? as a rotary driver myself im not expecting much. If i drive conservatively in the city i get about 17mpg average.
4. Could this car be used as a DD?
5. this one's for akira since he's the only one im aware of who has an fd on here. How much $$$ did it take to get your car to the point where you could depend on it everyday?
saying any other issues to be aware of would be appreciated

2. if you get an r1/2 model there isnt really a heat problem, other than the fact the end tanks and ast are 14 year old plastic. fyi the rx7 won the hot version endurance race one year
3. i forget the stock mpg. i have a stand alone so im way off. highway i get about 17mpg
4. yes
5. leave it pretty much stock and it wont let you down. if you want it to be reliable then just do an aluminum radiator, aluminum ast (dont use a stant pressure cap), and a downpipe

It isn't designed unreliable.. the wear and tear of the engine is what makes it become unreliable. the heat from the engine causes problems for the vacuum hoses on the engine; and trust me, this engine has A LOT. one hose breaking or shearing.. equals hard-to-find turbo/idle problems for the engine. looking for a hose in a 60' vacuum hose layout isn't something you really want to do. people say it shouldn't have been twin turbo because that's why it has so much vacuum hose.. to control the twin turbo system.
2. When they stopped making the FD in 2002, did they ever fix the heat problem?
the cooling issues with the series 6 (91-95 ==> in Japanese market) FD is the only one that we got in North America have already been taken care of in the series 8 (99-02) models. it's nothing special; the front bumper is changed and intercooler/radiator and intake have their own ducting plumbed into the bumper as opposed to the series 6/7 that have only one giant opening.
3. how is the mpg for this car? as a rotary driver myself im not expecting much. If i drive conservatively in the city i get about 17mpg average.
i wouldn't expect much out of it. a car running in tip-top condition probably wont get you more than 18mpg average, depending on how hard you drive it and how healthy the engine is. if you already drive a rotary, you should know how thirsty these engines are for fuel.
4. Could this car be used as a DD?
whether or not it can be used as a DD is up to the owner.. although i highly advise that you probably might want to invest in another car as a DD because the last thing you want is to be stranded without a car if your 7 runs into any issues and has to be taken off the road. been there and done that.. not the funnest thing to go thru.
5. this one's for akira since he's the only one im aware of who has an fd on here. How much $$$ did it take to get your car to the point where you could depend on it everyday?
i can't answer this one for you.

These are good questions. I don't know much about rotaries because none of my friends have ever owned one, but I've always been interested. My classmate has one, and a buddy of mine wants the newest RX8.
phantom, are you planning to get an RX7 or are you just curious?

i know there are a few options like an ls1 swap but i love rotaries too much to do that.

Just maybe... It would be a good place to visit to learn more about 7's and perhaps they might even have one for sale or they could be working on one and you can learn first hand about what kind of things you should expect, look out for, and how to inspect one.

you are not replying to what i quoted but i will reply to you anyways....
yes... topic starter should fly from 2500 miles from Georgia to California to go learn about rx7's in a body shop. good idea.
