im not able to answer this question directly, but i am able to read subtitles on an ipod video 5thgen. but i think it was the bare minimum for comfort. the 3rd nano has a smaller screen...and it will be really hard to read id imagine. also...if you converted youtube stuff... i dont think the quality will be quite as sharp either. so to answer your question, i would think it would be too hard to read...

Nanos are really small and you're going to watch a movie on it? And squint to see the subtitles?

You should look into other players, something with a bigger screen at least.

well if it's hardsubbed then yes.
i've tried it with my own new nano.
and it works. as long as it is converted.
just a tip, videora works really well with converting.
and if you want to add the subs, hardsub it using virtual dub and convert it to videora.

but the bad thing about doing is that youtube has really bad quality.
and like what other users said, the subtitles would be small because the screen is too small in dimension.
but if you had the knowledge to resize font subs and accurately see how the outcome would be.
but if you don't i don't reccomened it :x

I'd say it'd be hard, and depend on the subs. tongue.gif

I remember watching a drama on my iPod (REALLLYY bored during spare) and the subs were pretty thin. :T Had to kinda squint...

And these iPod nano's are so small, they really hurt your eyes after. =_= My friend lent me her iPod nano to watch a movie, and my eyes hurt after a half hour. Not to mention it was really uncomfortable in the chair.

An easy way to test it out is to just download the video and then play it back in a window the size of an iPod screen.

Just hold a ruler to your monitor and keep shrinking the window until the video measures 2" diagonally and you'll have an idea how big subtitles will look.

My personal opinion is that it'll be too small.

^ Wow. That's a really really smart idea to test sizes for anything. But make sure you have resolutions right, otherwise it'll still be out of proportion.

I think as long as the subtitles are clear enough then it should be okay. Getting videos from youtube generally not so good, seeing as the quality isn't the best.

+1 to videora converter as well. I use it to convert movies for my iPhone, and although it takes ages to convert (expected seeing as its a 2hour/700mb file) it works like a charm. d^^

I have that nano video and the screen is really small. The only clips I put are music videos~ One of the music video I had in my ipod had subs in it and it looks okay. Though you really have to hold the nano close to your face. It also depends on the subs. Some subs are clear, others not. especially if they are italicized.

your safest bet is no, you probably can't read the subtitles on the nano screen.
maybe a few videos with large and clear subtitles. but buying a nano just for a few videos isnt worth it.

I was going to yes say as soon as I read the topic title but seeing as you mentioned iPod Nano, you can't really be sure.
I'm guessing you can, it just depends on the quality and the size of the subtitles.

yes i could read the subs with my nano.. but the thing is, you really have to have a good quality video in the first place.. or else the quality will ruin the visibility of the words.. if you get what i mean..
but i still don't recommend watching something with subtitles on a nano, unless you have a magnifying glass HAHA

I'd get an iPod classic or something with a bigger screen. I can read subtitles on my iPod classic with relative ease, but I didn't get my vids from YouTube ... I downloaded videos and resized them for iPod. You can find some places where they've got subbed vids that are already in iPod format, so you don't have to convert them yourself. Like everyone else mentioned YouTube's quality is not the best, so I doubt that that would work out well.

Yep, my sisters have these iPods, and watch videos on it, and the subtitles are fine. Kinda small of course, but it's readable.

If that's the 3rd generation Nano then the subs have to be
pretty big or you have to bring it up really close to your eyes..haha
like people posted before me the size is quite small so it's
harder to see subs my best bet is the bigger ipods or itouch.

but the subs are still readable.
