Hey guys, fall 08' classes are coming up really soon.. and I guess I just wanted to discuss the art schools you guys got into. I don't have the greatest knowledge of art schools, but I believe I done enough research and attended many art seminars to give some highlight to your questions. And plus, I definitely have some questions of my own.

I applied to SAIC, RISD, SCAD, CCA, and Pratt. I got accepted into SAIC, CCA, and SCAD so far.
I was going to apply to Otis, Art Center, Cal Arts, and MICA as well, but changed my mind last minute.

SAIC- Their acceptance rates are like 81% so it makes me skeptical. SAIC was tied for first for their fine arts grad. program with Yale and RISD, and yet their acceptance seems very ..uncompetitive? Well I know they really emphasize conceptual art so I guess their admissions process has a broad view over the portfolios. I was actually accepted on the spot at a National Portfolio Day in Otis. I am not doubting my talents, but I was surprised I was allowed in so easily. Then again, I heard their transferring out rates are really high. Does anyone know about SAIC's reputation in the business world? I am majoring in Painting/Drawing.

RISD- Well, I guess this is a school every art student knows about. Their reputation is pretty well-known throughout the states. I met with one of their representatives and he seemed really sincere and truthful, yet it was funny because when he was reviewing my portfolio, he started to point out like symbolism in my paintings I did not mean to place. I just nodded in agreement lol. Well SAIC is my first choice but RISD is definitely my second. It all depends on the Scholarships. It kind of sucks because whichever school offers me the most scholarships is the place I have to go.

SCAD- Definitely a lot of mixed reviews about this school. It really seems like a love it or hate it school. People I talk to that went here loved it, but there are also people who hated it. The campus is in one of the most beautiful cities in the states, but I also heard it was one of the most dangerous, with high crime rates. I also that the school is expanding way too fast to accompany all the students, so the faculty is always changing. Anyone else know more about SCAD?

CCA- It was funny because the interviewer from CCA I met was brutally honest about his school. CCA has been around for a 100 years, so I assumed they had some level of prestige. He gave a flatout no. There is no prestige in CCA but he said there is an excellent program for alumi. Which is true because many art shows had graduates from CCA. CCA use to be my first choice because it was in California, but it is not one of the best.

Pratt- Pratt's campus really really appealed to me, but just like SCAD, I have been getting mixed reviews. And, they haven't responded to any of my questions. Also! Their acceptance letters take forever to come. Did anyone hear back from Pratt?

Some of my questions:
1. Is it better to finish your GED in a junior college so you don't have to pay for english classes in an art school? I was considering this, but it seemed like a waste of a year or two.
2. Housing... any art college students know anything about housing? Is it better to dorm with roommates? Is it better to buy individual meals or use the school catering program?
3. What sort of career opportunities were available after college?

Yea.... hope I can help you guys out with any of the questions you guys have!

1. idk about this, sorrry

2. Hm.. i honestly regret rooming with somebody just because it's a pain in the ass.. especialyl with all nighters that are oh so common in art schools (i go to RISD btw - frosh) Also, for risd at least, you HAVE to use the mealplans in freshmen year.. it has its pros and cons

3. you mean are available. I'm going to go in industrial design and it's so open - i honestly don't know what im going to yet because i havent entered my major yet haha.. foundation year is still goin on.. ugh. it gets really repetitive during 2nd semester

and your last statement is confusing - do you want us to answer and help you? or are you going to help others?

Congratulations on your acceptances.

as for your questions -

1 - I didn't take a GED... and I rather like english classes... Can't you just take a GED test? There's no reason to attend a CC for it, plus it sounds easy.

2 - I'd steer clear of rooming w/ someone. Especially if you're an art major - you're most likely going to have weird hours, bring in your supplies from class, and freak out the ppl around you about poisoning from either the paint fumes, hazardous dust from plaster, metal, foam, and get paint spots (even if you don't intend to) on valuable objects/clothing. I can also assure you, you'll be a space hog.

for meals, it depends upon your schedule. Its nice not having to worry about making your own food, but if the dining room hours are too restrictive, you're better off w/ a crockpot and hotplate.

3 - it depends on what you do, how you spend your time (activities/student jobs) and your portfolio and then it depends on if you just want to make money, or if you have something else in mind

From our dept, ppl (who graduated 05 - jan '08) have ended up doing everything from working in galleries, animation studios, EA, marketing, communications, as well as um...doing nothing, living @ home, waitressing, heading back to school, etc.

... about SCAD... I know quite a few ppl who went there, and yes, they absolutely loathe the place. Perhaps... because it was their dream school with those great merit scholarships, but then they lost their accreditation... A bunch of seniors suddenly didn't have enough credits to graduate, and then there were other students whose curriculum had changed, so the classes they took previously didn't count... A lot of ppl were very angry - it was a big mess.

I know someone else who's there - graduating this spring, and he doesn't mind the school, but finds the state, county, city - all extremely repressive.

I don't know why you didn't apply to Art Center. Art Center is a better school than anyone of those you listed. I'm not sure what major you are aiming for but also check University of Cincinnati, great as Art Center.
