Anybody going to Discover day for CHASS on April 4th?
Is it mandatory to go?

im going. gonna bring my mom and bf.. I don't think it's mandatory but I'm sure it'd be a good experience to get a better feel of campus/housing/staff..

I'm 95% sure I'm going to Riverside.
And this thread made me feel a lot better about it.
I was kinda bummed cause I got rejected from everywhere else and everyone always dogs on UCR.

Question:
I'm majoring in Politcal Science/Law and Society
Do I need to take the math placement test?

Also, rumor has it that freshman can't have cars?

I don't know what the CNAS learning community housing thing is (it must be a new thing?) but I can tell you about learning community. Learning communities ARE helpful. The tutoring sessions they require you to go to (about 2 hours a week) are taught by older students who have already taken the course. It's cool because they give you a bunch of tips on how to do well in the course. If you didn't understand something in lecture, they go over it in the tutoring session in detail and they're always there for you if you need any help getting something. Academically, being in a learning community was very rewarding. It also gives you priority when registering for those sciences classes. Last quarter, I got a seat for Bio5A before my registration date, but a friend of mine who wasn't in a learning community wasn't able to get in because there were absolutely NO seats left when it was time for him to register.

If you end up joining one, you'll be stuck with the same group of people in ALL of the classes learning community assigns to you. That means every single science lecture, discussion, lab and tutoring session. That may be a good or bad thing, depending on you and the people your stuck with. Its an easy way to make friends because these people will be in almost ALL of your classes. It's also super convenient to study with them. However, if some of them get on your nerves or drama occurs, its going to be hard to ignore them when they're in most of your classes for an entire year. What also sucks about it is the assigned schedule they give you. During my first quarter, my schedule was all over the place. On one day, i had afternoon and night classes (night classes SUCK btw) and an 8am lab the next day. It's was pretty ridiculous, especially for commuters like myself. If you're chill with being around the same people for an entire year and you're ok with a given schedule with a possibility of weird hours, I say go for it! It will help you academically.

I don't know what the CNAS learning community housing thing is about, but it sounds like the people in your learning community would live with you too? If that's the case, I don't think you should go for the housing option. As a college student, its important to meet and make friends with a lot of different people, so you shouldn't be confined with the same people all the time. Learning community is a great opportunity to make friends, but housing with them would be a bad idea.

EDIT: I forgot to mention...if you get stuck with a crappy professor, there's nothing you can do about it unless you drop learning community entirely.

Hmmm, interesting..
Thanks a lot biggrin.gif

I think all incoming freshmen are required to take the math placement test, unless you passed an AP math test (don't take my word on this, though). Try checking on UCR's website to make sure.

And the car thing is bull. Freshmen can definitely bring their cars, but I suggest if you can't park for jack squat, don't bother. I drive and I'm SICK of all the dumbasses who can't park.

Haha, alright good. You'd be pissed because a good number of the crappy parkers @ UCR are people with BMW's. Makes you wonder why they have such nice cars to begin with...

I haven't and really want to, but I've heard that the class is extremely easy.

So far I've only heard of the English placement test, Math placement test, and language placement test (which you must take prior to signing up for a foreign language class, I believe).

For incoming freshmen in general, you must take the English and Math placement tests, unless you are exempt from one of the two or both.

And ap602, I would think that UCR would either email you or mail you something in the mail. I personally submitted my statement of intent via Internet? Actually crap, I don't even remember now. Fall and winter quarter have completely killed my brain. x.x

Hey guys, I just signed up for a history class at the UV that starts at 9:10...but the problem is, I have psych discussion @ the psych building that ends at 9. It looks like its going to be pretty much impossible for me to walk to my car and drive to UV in under in under 10 minutes. Is there a trolley in the area or something? Any advice? hah...
