Mmhmm. Don't let it deter you, not everyone wants to transfer in the end. I've met more who wanted to in the beginning, and let's just say... their grades aren't exactly up to par for transferring. By all means, the college is fine. I just had higher aspirations that didn't die, and I want to follow them still.

It depends a lot on your background and stuff. I personally did not study very much at all, and spent a lot of time hanging out with my friends.

To be quite honest, I just don't like the environment and such. My mom keeps telling me it's dangerous at Riverside, and although she's only partially right, I really hate the hot weather.
As for my aspirations and goals? I could do them here, of course. But I was born in San Diego, and ever since leaving it 10 years ago, I've wanted to go back. I wasn't accepted into UCSD (Curse you, UC Admissions!), and I've been a bit bitter about it, but I plan on storming back in there and showing them what they've been missing out on.
It's a personal thing. UCR is a good school, it may not be high on the UC rankings, but it's rising and although the campus isn't exactly gorgeous (UCLA!), the weather isn't great (UCSD!), it doesn't smell like cows (UCD! :noheart:) and it's not horribly competitive (UCB! :noheart:). In general, if you like competition, this isn't the school for you, or if you like cow crap. But if you REALLY like cow crap and still want to go here, visit Ontario alot. There's plenty of cow smells there.

1. If you're Asian and are a very Asian person (you need your fob tunes, your dose of Cue, your Asian plazas and fobby shops), you are NOT - I repeat you are NOT - going to survive at UCR (or Riverside in general). The city is extremely deprived of Asian-ess. Life Cafe is like the only Asian place you could go for food near campus and if you're willing to go farther, there's that overrated Korean BBQ place by Tyler Mall. If you're a fob, you might survive in terms of friends because I know UCR's TSA (Taiwanese Student Association) is pretty active and UCR has a good number of fobs, but other than that....no
2. If you're a party person, you might be able to make do at UCR. Thing is many, many, MANY of the parties are run by frats & sororities so you gotta have connections and know the right people.
3. The weather is a joke. During the fall and winter, there are barely any super cold days, despite UCR being right by the frickin desert. And don't count on spring - Riverside skips spring and goes straight to summer.
4. Food wise, let's not even bother with dorm food. The HUB (formerly known as The Commons) offers a slim ass variety - a Japanese place, Italian place, Mexican place, and Chinese place. Panda Express (the Chinese place) is the most popular. Off campus, you'll die. Fat Burger? No thanks. Boba Cafe? Their food looks atrocious. The only places you can live off of (at least the ones I lived off of my freshman year) are Flame Broiler, Life Cafe, and Mc Donald's. There's also this good Thai food place on Chicago Ave, but that's it.
5. If you're one of those Asian girls who is deathly afraid of the sun (and assuming your skin isn't the kind that never tans) - oh boy. The sun shines mighty and bright with its damaging UVA/UVB rays in Riverside. Shaded areas are not THAT common (although there are some places). But yeah - walking to class under the big ass sun? I suggest you either carry an umbrella with you at all times & buy a lifetime supply of whitening products and SPF 130++ PA+++ sunscreen, or GTFO from UCR.
6. If you're not used to ghetto-ness, the city of Riverside will introduce you to it.

hahah its honestly not THAT bad when you actually come to the school
the weather wasn't even that bad this year
it was pretty effin hot during the spring, but when summer came along it actually started to get cooler. at first i was like wtf? o_o
and it gets reallyyyyyy cold during the winter so make sure you bring your winter jackets & boots etc
but yeah dorm food effin sucks
and definitely bring sunscreen... i swear, my skin got like five shades darker in the rside sun

You can't sign up for an earlier orientation? You seriously want to go as early as possible.

You register for classes on your orientation day. Of course, the best classes are going to very quickly become full, plus Freshmen are registering after Sophmores, Juniors, and Seniors already, so there may not be many seats left for you.
I suggest going as early as possible because I took a later date, and I didn't exactly get the classes I wanted (Damn Advisor wouldn't let me take Computer Science, said it was too 'easy' for me. I'll tell you what's easy for me and what isn't, dammit!), as well as a few classes filling up.
So yes, going early is better, because you should register those classes ASAP!

1. Untrue. I'm incredibly Asian, but I've survived just fine. Besides the fact that there exists Life Cafe, Ten Ren, University Cafe, all within 1/2 a mile of school, there's also the fact that the school is 50% Asian (seriously). To add on, the only "Asian-y" places that have "Cue" and "Asian Plazas" nearby would probably be... oh, right.. nowhere. Both UCLA&UCR are equi-distantly away from the heart of SGV. Irvine is maybe 30mins from any popular "Asian" hangouts.
2. Also untrue. Adding on to the fact that it'd be dumb at ANY UC to party a lot & not study, ANYONE can "party," provided they have friends. It's not about having connections/knowing the right people, it's about having the social capacity to make a few friends. All you need is a computer with music, someone over 21 (which I am.. problem solved), and a few friends.
3. It's cold in the winter. At night it reaches 40F, sometimes 35F. It's snowed here ONCE before. I remember waking up and seeing it. Yes, RS skips spring and goes to summer. But, uummmm, this is southern california. It's like that here. Want real seasons? Go to Minnesota or something.
4. Lol. Lol. &Lol. There's AMAZING food in Riverside. The Commons/HUB have an AMAZING pasta place. We have C-stores everywhere that sell many types of food; a local farmer's market in front of Scotties, and delicious Mexican food just about everywhere. Not only that, downtown Riverside, which is a 10 minute drive down University, has some of the most AMAZING food & coffee houses. It's a Grind, Simple Simon's, Mario's. There is tons and tons and tons of food everywhere. There's "Best Thai Food" which is AMAZING, Ten Ren which has the BEST tea around..
then there's like Chipotle and California Pizza Kitchen down in Central, and Tyler Mall which has like.. PF Changs, Cheesecake, TGIF, Yardhouse..
If you go a little east on the 60, there's BJ's, In&Out..
5. This is kind of a retarded point, sorry. Are you suggesting that UCR is the ONLY place in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA where the sun shines? Or maybe UCR is the ONLY PLACE the sun will shine with UVA/UVB rays? I mean.. lolol I'd like to find somewhere where the sun doesn't do that to you. Hmm, let's see.. another galaxy would work. But yeah. The sun will shine wherever. There is about as much shade here as ANY campus. #5 is laughable when you think about it. Seriously, carefully, think about this.
6. Umm.. I guess this place is pretty shady compared to many areas. It was to me... &then I went to visit LA for the first time. Koreatown. <- lol. I <3 LA&Koreatown, but it's kinda scary there. &here. So yes.. please be careful in Riverside. It's especially dangerous for naive teens who think they are invincible.. but of course if you read this, you're not, right
@OP.. I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing you, but I've been here 3 years and I simply want to point out the flaws in your list.

Hi intercourse. ^^
I'm also attending UCR this year, but as a Biology major. My orientation date is July 7-8, though. ):
Is anyone else going on this day?

Hey I want to add my opinions to the mix!
1. I'm kinda white-washed, so I thought the school was perfectly fine. If you happen to be a white-washed type Asian like myself, you'll survive perfectly fine. There's a Chik-Fil-A and an In-n-out nearby, as well as a Costco and Target and other nice things
2. Au contraire, I personally felt like the only people who were getting into parties were the ones with connections. As an incoming freshmen, I'm sure most of you will be studying
3. Hot. It's never particularly chilly during the day, although some days in winter around the evening required me to put on an extra thick layer like a hoodie that weighs frickin' 5 lbs. There is no "spring" so to speak, but personally, I didn't find it that hot this last school year, as long as you're not around for summer sessions. I'm from norcal too, so this might be saying something here.
4. A matter of taste. Dorm food sucks, agreed. Ten Ren's is overpriced. Life Cafe is standard asian fare, in my opinion. It's cheap though, which is really nice. In-n-out is amazing, par usual. Chik-Fil-A, yum. Costco, yummmmm (This Costco has an INSIDE food court... you're gonna need a card.
5. Thanks to the heat, it feels like the sun is extra strong here. UCB has less sun than the other UCs, and UCSD has the best weather in general. It might also be attributed to our crappy smog conditions (The air quality is really bad on some days. The sky looks almost gray-blue sometimes.) I've seen a single asian girl walk around with an umbrella all the time, and I guess you should put on sunscreen if you have delicate skin. The shade thing is incorrect, as far as I'm concerned. I feel that the other UC's have more full trees and, frankly, more covered walkways. Hell, even SJSU has more cover, with the awning-things and the covered walkways.
6. This is damn true. Keep around campus, and you won't experience it as much, but in general, the place feels dangerous like Compton (I've never really been to Compton. Just stories.). There's been reports of rape and theft, but I'm sure most campuses have to deal with that. Walk with a buddy whenever you can, and carry pepper spray (I carried a knife at most times).

1. I didn't care if food was sucky in the commons (which I don't think it is) or in the dorms (which its is sort of is lol) , my friends go to other UCs and gosh it's school food people, do you expect restaurant quality? If you're so picky bring food from home, or just deal with it until you go home on the weekends (which is what people I know do). My friends at other UCs do the same thing, they focus on "school" on the weekdays and hangout on the weekends when they come back home so lack of places/hangout spots around the school is not a problem. My roomate on the otherhand and some people I know go out at nights to eat dinner.
2. About the Asian thing, I think I'm super Asian but I've been fine. sheesh everywhere I go around UCR I see asian people anyways. With the sun, I don't think it's always hot here. In the winter it's cold for me at night and it rains and it's windy. Everywhere is hot when it comes to the sun, so you'll be fine (and yes I'm one of those girls who have to keep my skin pale and white and I've been absolutely fine here!!)
3. parties: Of course if you're in a sorority or whatever you'll have plenty to go to, and clubs are the same too. However, there's also parties that you can go to just by meeting the right people and right crowds. Obviously you can't just say i wanna go to a party, and some person will magically appear in front of you inviting you ><. you have to get out and meet people, and it goes from there. This is the same for all places and all schools !!!! if you don't get out and meet people you won't get anywhere, don't expect that if you go to a party school, parties will come lining up in front of you >_> (and yes I have friends at SB!!)
4. if you think UCR is not competitive enough of a competition, I think you're wrong. IDK about other majors, but people in the science ones are very competitive, I think the business majors are too. All these people have a goal like going to graduate school, medical or pharmacy school so everyone tries to get good grades and other things.
the majority of people I know are happy or contend here, only so rarely do I see someone complain.
