I took the class spring quarter. Pop quizzes....I actually don't remember ever taking one. I went to class on and off because of how boring (and near common sense for this day & age) the material was. I heard from my roomate (who also took the class spring quarter) that Gustafson gave out one pop quiz and supposedly it did count.
As for taking role, I don't think he ever did. I think it was just up to you whether you wanted to go to lecture or not.
I would advise popping in at least once a week because he does cover stuff (and will specifically mention while doing so) that will be on the midterm and/or final.
And as well as you may think you know the material, it still helps to read the book because he picks a few random things to be on the tests. From what I recall, for Exam #1 - STUDY THE PEOPLE AND WHO DID/INVENTED WHAT. If you don't, you will bomb it. What sucks is I specifically remember him telling the class that we didn't have to know the people (only the inventions), and when test time came around, I was like "WTF why are people's names on here/?!"
Bottom line: Go to class once in a while and actually read the book. It will help. I ended up with a B in the class and it sucks because I actually tried hard. -_x I think how well one does in this class just depends on personal study habits. Overall, CS 8 is an easy class still because you're guaranteed to pass. You'd have to try really hard to fail the class, really.
Thanks for the really detailed info. I think I'll just attend the first 10 minutes or so of every class in case he does give a pop quiz.
cool what time n days?

I'll get around to it... I bought more grapes and they do need a container.
And as for Jen, way to look at a thread you haven't looked at in ages.

The only time you see fun and UCR in the same sentence is when it says "UCR is NOT Fun". I wish I was kidding, but I really am not.
For starters, you could go to our meet-up, the date is yet to be announced still because I'm supposed to organize it and I'm lazy.

That depends on what your idea of fun is. If you know the right people, UCR can be very fun. If you like the ordinary/mundane/straight edge type, then you're in the right place here...and I wish you luck.
If you actually like to have fun though, then perhaps we should talk via PM's. I'll see if I can direct you in your desired direction.

I'm going to be honest (and Keion pretty much said it) - if you want to have fun @ UCR, you have to be the party type of person. Party, drink, get smashed, blah blah.
It sucks for me because I'm not really a party person (although I'm down for drinking, I prefer with only a few friends as opposed to a house full of strangers) so that's pretty much why I don't have fun @ UCR.

its unfortunate that you perceived having "fun" to be that way....
