Math 5 = Pre-calculus [once you pass this, you got to 9A]
Math 8A = 1st part of Pre-calculus [once you pass this, you go to 8B]
Math 8B = 2nd part of Pre=calculus [once you pass this, you go to 9A]
Math 9A = 1st part of Calculus [once you pass this, you go to 9B]
Math 9B = 2nd part of Calculus [once you pass this, you go to 9C]
Math 9C = Last part of Calculus series [once you pass this, you're free to take Vector Calculus which is Math 10A]
Each one is a separate class, the number is what series the class is, like 9 is the Calculus series, etc.
^If you were place in a lower class on the exam but got the score for the calculus AP test, you'll get into calculus. AB will get you to Math 9B and credits for BC will get you to Math 9C. Or if you have college credits from a JC or something.
Oh yeah, for science and engineering majors, make sure you are place into 8A and above. 8A is the lowest place class that you should place into, if not and you got lower~ seriously think about summer school.

I'm going to that one. I don't see a problem, what classes could be so amazing that they have no slots? Im thinking it's more of a time-issue, as in we'll probably get stuck with some crappy time slot like 9 PM.

each class is a quarter long. so a series like math 9 series (math 9a - math 9c), would be a year long. (assuming you pass)

just in case i don't pass the ap exam or something, should i take summer class? there's the summer abridge program at riverside where you can take those courses to get caught up... but it's expensive. like $1000+ and that doesn't even include housing, books, and whatnot. even with financial aid i'm not sure i can pay for it...
edit- oh and since each math course is a quarter... that means i can complete math5-9b in a year, right?
it says on my bio sci. paper that you just need to take math008B or math009a, MATH009B to fulfill the major requirement.
so should i be ok? ):

wellz i only took 9abc and 10a so here's the break down
9a derivatives and everything that goes along with it
9b anti-derivatives and everything that goes along with it
9c series, + polar coordinates, + something else i dun remember (last 2 are short, covered in last 2-3 weeks of class, so mostly series)
10a vector calculus, multi-variable calculus
this is what i think for each course:
9a, EASY EASY EASY!! i went to 5 lectures total, 1 of them was the midterm, and the other was the final so i basically went to 3 lectures HA!
9b, HARD HARD HARD!!! u will never encounter a course that will stress you out like this one (lol but only the part about volumes, takes you DAYS to understand that stupid concept)
9c FUN FUN FUN!! it's not easy, but it's pretty fun. like i said, series, but basically there's converge and diverge and u get like 10 "tests" to figure out if it does either one, so it's pretty easy/fun.
10a DON'T john teshING TAKE THIS CLASS!!! the book SUX, the concepts are HARD, and it's all around heartache!! of course this is the class i barely studied for but still, i HATED it. what i mean by multivariable calculus is u know anti-derivative? now do that for multiple variables in 1 equation. sounds hard? it's not really but CONFUSING!!!
and again reason i thought 8ab was before 9b was cuz 8 series was for those who were weak in their trig, so it concentrates on that. but again i've never taken it so ionno, i was lucky enough to figure out how to do math again during the test after summer break

I like Calculus because it's a easy class. That's about it.

Hmm... maybe lol I'm not sure now. I'll take your word for it heh.
I just took the 9 series only lol. Yay for no vector calc. for me... haha I'm taking 9c right now and it's pretty fun/hard at the same time... it's a lot of work. XD

Personal opnion, I think you should go to 9C. I dont really know, but you might as well finish all of the calculus courses offered.
I'm not sure if you need to go further. From a biological standpoint, as in from the major, Biology isn't really that much about numbers, or any hardcore calculus in the subject. I mean, microbiology and some of the more lab-like majors may require it, along with a chemistry course, but I dont think you need anything like Vectors...Hell, Precalculus is already too much in my opnion.

Haha, I agree. So like someone asked before .. Is Math5 pretty much Math8A & Math8B combined?

because if people who got into math5 can get to 9a right after, what's the point of me studying and getting math 8B for?
EDIT: nevermind, math 8B is higher than math5 lol. i'm a retard. for anyone who cares:
Mathematics 5: Pre-Calculus
Text: College Algebra and Trigonometry, Fourth Edition, by M. Dugopolski
Publisher: Addison Wesley
Prerequisite: A sufficiently high score on the placement examination, as
determined by the Mathematics Department. A study of inequalities, absolute
value, functions, graphing, logarithms, trigonometry, vector analysis, roots of
polynomials, conics, counting and other elementary concepts of mathematics.
The syllabus for Math 8B
The syllabus is a melding of the syllabus for Mathematics 9A and preliminary material from trigonometry. The
preliminary material is drawn from the trigonometry sections of the current Math 5 textbook and is brought in as
needed.
and Math 9A is just 1st year calculus.
so basically for those who are taking Math8B with me, i think it's a "melding" (combination) of stuff from Math 9A and stuff from trigonometry!
correct me if i'm wrong..

so i would be taking 9c if i got credit for calculus ab and bc exams right? since on the ap website it says for riverside the classes that it gives credits for is 9a&9b. hmm by series, you mean taylor series and maclaurin series right? they are fun, but i already learned all that in calculus bc.. so it seems like it would just be review for me
