Students also have an opportunity to pass the requirement in UCR’s summer
sessions by passing ENGL 004 or ENGL 005 before they become full-time
students in the fall. They can also take a pre-ENGL 001A class during the
summer at a local college or university before they become full-time students
at UCR. Students taking summer courses not at UCR can then retake the
UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam at UCR at the end of the summer.
Students who have not met the requirement upon entrance to UCR are
placed into one of the following UCR courses of instruction. Placement in
these courses is determined by the Director of Entry Level Writing and is
based on the student’s performance on the UC Analytical Writing
Placement Exam.
1. BSWT 003 (an ESL course preparatory to ENGL 004)
2. ENGL 004
3. ENGL 005
4. A qualifier course plus ENGL 006D
Then no one will suspect you didn't pass the english exam when you enter UCR =)

Those who didn't pass the English exam.
You will be informed of placement into the English class 003,004,005. Depending on the level of FAIL of your placement.
You have the option of taking it via summer bridge or during the regular class sessions. Beyond that, you need to pass 005 (since 003,004->005) within one year. To be more specific, you have a year to pass 003, a year to pass 004, a year to pass 005. Therefore, if you start with 003 you have 3 years to finish 005.
It isn't particular bad that you failed the English exam, people fail. I failed lol. Anyhow, I suggest you don't worry, you'll catch up soon enough
Though, the University policy is that if you don't fulfill the English requirements within a year (well like I said above) , you will be kicked out >>. Hey, if you speak english, don't worry
------------
Other notes:
7.4% Fee increase last year hurts, but financial aid rocks.
Those who register in July, don't worry if you don't get your classes. Wait. Wait till people don't pay and drop the class MUHAHAHA.
All, I have to say is, DORM FOOD SUCKS. Look forward to that. Weather sucks to haha.
Any other questions?

So basically 003 is one quarter, 004 is another, 005 is another quarter.

However, you should be able to take summer bridge. Ask during orientation or call them.

engl001a is not the lowest english class. there are some people who don't pass the placement test and are placed into engl4 or engl5 i believe. those classes are the bASIC BASIC english classes.
also, when i took engl001c, there was someone in my class who did so well on the placement test that this was the first and only english class he had to take. but i'm assuming that most students get placed into 1a so it's normal.
engl001a = beginner composition
engl001b = intermediate composition
engl001c = applied intermediate composition
after taking these 3 classes, you're all done! it'll take a year if you do them consecutively for 3 quarters.
beware of some english teachers, they are VERY hard.
hope that helped

English 1A is the starting english class for all incoming freshmen. it is not the lowest english class. the lowest english class is bswt 3 which is basic writing 3.

You won't need a calculator.
It's not that the questions aren't impossible without one, you CAN'T use them.
Alot of questions are factoring or precalculus, and alot of those don't allow you to use a calculator of any sort.
