i havnt heard anything but i wouldnt be surprised. though i bet they would only crush a car if it gross pollutes and they owner cant fix it. they cant crush a car just because its old

Yeah ... what about the classic cars, some of them are super old but also super rare. They wouldn't crush those right? The ones people wanna rebuild and stuff. :s

do you people even think? they cant/wont crush a car solely based on age. if you have an old pos car that WONT PASS SMOG then they will give you the option of crushing and receiving some amount of compensation or to keep the car, but you wont be able to register it or insure it. so if you have an old classic car that you are rebuilding you'd just register is non operational, and you dont have to smog it and it cant be on public roads. once the car is running you can smog it and drive it on the road. though if the car is pre 72 its exempt from smog.

This sounds like the California Car Buy Back program. If the owner wants to retire their older vehicle, they can get paid $650-1000 for their old vehicle. The requirement is that the vehicle still runs, passed smog etc.
These are the cars they crush. Once the car as reached a certain age and registration renewal has come, they send a letter to the owner offering them this option, but it also says that if their car is collector car or a car of a high value, disregard the letter.
My aunt's old car, her 1984 Nissan Maxima (it shared the same V6 engine as the Nissan 280SX, I think) was a collectors car and I remember her outrage when she got that letter in the mail about retiring her car (Apparently did read the end regarding the 'disregard the letter if your car is a antique or collector's car), getting paid $800, etc. Her car had only 70000 miles, she was the original owner and the whole car is incredibly clean, inside and out. I don't think there is another 84 Maxima in such a great shape out there period. I made the mistake of not taking the car as my first car when she offered it... now this car is gone (sold to a collector).
