Hi Fellow Soompiers,
I'm a Biological Sciences major, planning to go to a dental school after I graduate. Currently a Sophomore, will be registering as Junior standing soon... if I don't withdraw my classes...
I'm taking 4 classes, 3 fulfills the major requirements. I'm doing alright in my Organic Chemistry 1 class... I might be getting a C by the end of this semester.
I don't know if I should withdraw the semester... there's only 4 weeks left of school. I have 3 weeks to decide if I should withdraw.
C in Organic Chemistry... is it bad? I can't retake the course for a better grade if I get that C.
[If I do withdraw, I should be able to take two of the courses over the summer that will bring me back on track for the Fall semester.]
Within the 3 weeks before the final withdrawal deadline, I have 4 exams. Three of the exams will be coming in the following week. The Organic exam is in the 3rd week... and I won't be able to find out how I did on the exam until a week later, which'll be after the deadline.
Should I withdraw or wait and take the C?
Thanks.

i don't think you should withdrawal. a C is not bad at all, especially for a science course. you still have a decent amount of time to raise your grade a bit, too! i have a couple required science classes that i need to take before i graduate and i don't expect much better than that, haha (i'm an art major).
i'm not sure how dental school works, but i doubt they will scour your transcript and notice one little C. they'll probably just look at your over-all GPA.

a C is passing.
i think.
are you sure you can get better than that C during summer school?
summer school is faster than the regular semester.
i think, it's really up to you.
what can you live with? what cant you live with?
just try your best until school gets out.
i mean, 3-4 weeks is still some time.
talk to your teacher.
ex. credit, anything.
i really hope things work out for you.
good luck.
take care.

it depends on how badly that C will affect your GPA.. and if you do drop it and take it again.. can you do better?
if you say yes to both.. then i suggest you drop
damn lucky people who can drop so late
we have 2 or 3 weeks after semester to drop.. otherwise we can't anymore.. pshhhh too late for me anyway.. haha i screwed up last semester.. but i made up for it this semester hopefully.. and i'm officially done for this semester anyway.. lol wayyy to late for me to do anything but yeah

depends on how the grading system works and how much a C is weighted into your GPA.
For me, a C is passing while a C- isn't. =\
GPA is the main thing that most grad school looks for so I would take that into consideration.
If you're a BioSci major and want to retake it, I think you'd have to take it at your school and not a junior college or something. Well, at least thats how it works with mine. For me, any required classes under your major have to be taken at the university while other classes general education classes can be taken at junior classes.
I want to go to Dentistry School too but I'm not a Bio major. Instead, I'm undeclared and probably major in the Social Science field. However, I'm taking the prerequisites for Dentistry though. I think it's a better idea on my part. The classes will be easier if I take them at a community college so it could boost up my GPA!
I don't know if that helps but i thought I'd add my 2 cents.
GL with your decision!

well it depends
do you really want to drop so late in the semester, and feel like youve wasted your time on those classes for the past few months just to drop the class now??
its not too late to up your grade. a C doesnt kill anyone, and if youre doing good in your other classes, that C would be the least of your worries...

heh. Thank you all for the care and support.
I keep reconsidering after I said I won't drop. Semester withdrawal... I guess I can save those withdrawals for later years... =)
---
All the courses I will be taking will be at the university I'm currently enrolled in. I can't really guarantee that I will be able to do better if I do retake it though but at least I have some knowledge of it and possibly try to get a higher grade... possibly.
----
=( Never suggest to any freshmen to take two science courses in a semester xD It really kills. T.T
---
Thanks for answering =) I got yall message hehe

ummm dont withdraw thats just dumb...work ur butt off these next few weeks...yeah the grade will affect ur GPA however its better for grad/med schools to see that u at least went through the course...W's can factor in as F's at some schools just like how a CR may be factored in as a C...just grab the C or see if u can raise it...talk to ur teacher during office hours and see what u can do...teacher should give you some ideas...
keep in mind if u get financial aid you need to pass 10 units out of the 12 min enrolled each semester or they make u pay it back...

Don't forget to talk to your adviser about this and also your professor. Ask them questions and they'll help you to the best of their ability. Also, try to find some people who already took the class and see what they think you should do.
This is what you should really do. I told a buddy of mine to do that this semester and he stuck with statistics and he was just plain out failing it. I also stuck to my Physics course this semester when I have an F and C- on the exams so far, now I got a C on the recent one, so yea. I was confident enough and prayed about it.
Also, ask your Organic professor if he/she can tell you your grade before the deadline. They should be able to do that since it's basically life or death in organic chemistry.
If you are confident enough that you'll get the C, then go for it. It's way better than re-taking it again. Plus, you have the other science classes which you can get A's and B's on. One or two C's shouldn't affect you getting into dental school. They might even mention it in the interview or not, usually they just look at the GPA. Remember though, if you do get a W on your transcript, then they will definitely ask you why you withdraw from the course in your interview, which you probably don't want to answer.
