How Nice/polite/friendly Are You To Waiters/hosts At Restaurants? (do you smile, look them in the eye, thank them etc)

I noticed something strange.

Some families I go out to eat with the parents are always super friendly with the waiters. They will thank the waiters with eye contact for every single little thing. They will ask about the waiters background. They will try to make friends with the host as the restaurant owner says good bye. And bow and shake hands etc...

Other families I go out with the waiter is treated like a machine.... Tap on table if you want something, ignore waiter totally after delivery of item. No eye contact, lucky if waiter gets a brief nod. Bare nod to owner.

How does your family treat the waiting staff and what do you think of it....?

My mum and I are really polite, we smile, say thankyou talk to them etc.
My dad ... that's another story lol. I pretty much had to tell him what social etiquette was last time we were dining in a restaurant haha.

i'm usually polite to them. i just smile, say thank you..
if i was a waitress, i wouldn't want a rude-arse person being rude to me.

I'm very polite to them and always try to strike up a friendly conversation.

I was complimented by a girl at Max Brenner (chocolate cafe) last week about being nice and asking how she is. smile.gif

my parents are okay to the waiters but they can be rude sometimes and hardly ever be extra nice to them.
i try to be extra nice because you just get better service and make their life so much easier.

plus it's not exactly hard for them to spit on your food secretly behind the scenes

Smile, eye contact and say thank you.
My family could always be nicer though...They're still not very familiar with the tipping system dry.gif.
When I'm out with my friends I usually tip the waiter/waitress more than I should (30-40% of bill), so I think I'm a fairly nice guy.

we're polite and say thank you and the like.

closeness depends on the openness of the waiter/waitress themselves; depends if they want to divulge their info out~

I'm generally nice to waiters, & so are my family & friends. (:
I don't see the point of being rude to them? Haha.

If the waiters are polite, then we'll say our thank you's, have a little chit chat (how's your day been and such), drop them a tip, etc.

I don't think i used to but ever since I started working in customer service related jobs I do because I understand how good it is to be appreciated for doing a good job. To us as the customer it may not seem like a big deal but it's those little things that can help brighten a person's day and help the work day go by quicker. On a more selfish note, if it's place that you frequently visit, they'll be nicer to you and allow for bending of rules tongue.gif I don't think i'll purposely try to befriend them but if it happens then it happens.
