How Nice/polite/friendly Are You To Waiters/hosts At Restaurants? (do you smile, look them in the eye, thank them etc)

Some families I go out to eat with the parents are always super friendly with the waiters. They will thank the waiters with eye contact for every single little thing. They will ask about the waiters background. They will try to make friends with the host as the restaurant owner says good bye. And bow and shake hands etc...
Other families I go out with the waiter is treated like a machine.... Tap on table if you want something, ignore waiter totally after delivery of item. No eye contact, lucky if waiter gets a brief nod. Bare nod to owner.
How does your family treat the waiting staff and what do you think of it....?

i try to be extra nice because you just get better service and make their life so much easier.
plus it's not exactly hard for them to spit on your food secretly behind the scenes

My family could always be nicer though...They're still not very familiar with the tipping system
When I'm out with my friends I usually tip the waiter/waitress more than I should (30-40% of bill), so I think I'm a fairly nice guy.

closeness depends on the openness of the waiter/waitress themselves; depends if they want to divulge their info out~
