Won and Kim to head Bong's "Mother"

Written by Han Sunhee

SEOUL 'Korean Wave' star Won Bin and veteran actress Kim Hye-Ja have been set as the stars of "The Host" helmer Bong Joon-ho's new pic "Mother."

Project was presented, without cast, last month at the HAF project mart in Hong Kong by producer and artist management group Barunson.

Scripted by Bong and Park Eun-kyo, story sees an asocial loser framed as the perpetrator of an horrific murder and his hard-headed mother has to figure out who really did it to keep her son from prison.

Pic will be produced on a $5 million budget by Barunson's Choi Jae-won and Seo Woo-sik, with lensing in the fall. CJ Entertainment will handle local Korean distribution and international sales.

"Mother" is the first movie for Won since his starring role in B.O. record breaker "Taegukgi" and "My Brother" nearly four years ago.''I want to make the saddest yet most beautiful crime drama ever," Bong said. "At the center of this story is a small and weak mother who stands alone, a woman so determined that she can't even stop herself.''

Introduction
When the record-breaking Korean box office hit The Host was selected for Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2006, it encouraged director Bong Joon-ho to push the boundaries of Korean cinema even further. In his hard-hitting new crime drama, Mother, the lead character is not a detective but a devoted and determined mother. When her son is accused of a horrible murder in their neighborhood, her maternal instinct forces her to conduct her own investigation, one that will uncover dangerous secrets as she unravels the mysterious truth.

Dont trust anyone.
You go out and find the real killer...

Synopsis

Hye-ja is a single mom to 27-year-old Do-joon. Her son is her raison dtre. Though an adult in years, Do-joon is nave and dependent on his mother, and sometimes behaves in ways that are stupid or simply dangerous. He is a constant source of anxiety for everyone. One day a young girl is found dead in an abandoned building and Do-joon is accused of her murder. An inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force that closes Do-joons case too quickly inspire his mother to act on her ownto act as Mother in its purest form. Summoning all her maternal instincts and trusting no one, she sets out to find a killer and prove her sons innocence.

Directors comment

Everyone has a mother, and everyone has a precise idea of what a mother is. This is the person that cherishes each of us most, who is the most gentle to us, and the most irritating. Many feelings collide on this issue. This is a person that we know well, and who is strong.

The relationship between a son and his mother is the basis for all human relationships. Countless novels, films, and television programs have approached the mother figure, but I wanted to explore it for myself, and see where I could take it on the cinematographic level. And push it to the extreme.

I wanted to make a film that digs profoundly at what is extreme and powerful, like in the heart of a fireball. In this sense, MOTHER is a challenge for me because my preceding films were all stories that tended towards extension; if a murder allowed me to discuss the 80s in Korea, and a monster allowed me to speak about family and the United States, then MOTHER is quite the contrary. It is a film wherein all the forces converge at the heart of things. The figure of the mother has been seen before, its very banal, but I see this as a new approach, and I hope it will be perceived that way. Like something that is familiar from home, but really came from abroad.

Info

KIM HYE-JA, MOTHER

The mother that is drawn into a fight to save her son from accusations of murder -You and me are oneWeve only got each other.

A single mother living with her mentally challenged son, Do-joon. Working at an apothecary, she is not above engaging in illegal activities to help him. Do-joon is her reason for being. When his happiness is threatened, Mother steps into a world of unimaginable chaos and hideous revelations. The star of THE RUSTIC DIARY, one of the longest running and most beloved television series in Korean history, KIM Hye-ja nonetheless struggled with the stereotypical image of an endlessly tolerant, boundlessly loving mother. With MOTHER, this Grand Dame of acting has completely subverted the almost sacred maternal image she helped construct over the last thirty years. KIMHye-jas profoundly revolutionary performance as a mother whose courage and resolution are tested is sure to be 2009s biggest surprise.

Interview with KIM Hye-ja

It was in 2004 when a young director came looking for me, wanting to make a film with me. That was how I met BONG Joon-ho. What really struck me then was that he remembered some dialogue and performances from old TV dramas I had made with great accuracy and fondness. I was taken aback that he could remember all that. I was away from the film industry in recent years because, lets be honest, there werent good new roles written for someone like me. What they were sending me was the same old stuff. But MOTHER was quite different. Director BONG explained how he wanted to challenge the stereotype. Another difference was that in TV dramas, they all had the attitude, Ms. KIM, you are such a veteran, I think you know what to do. But I was determined to do something different this time, so I asked BONG to push me to the extreme. And he was only happy to oblige! On the first shoot we did eighteen takes, some kind of a record for me, and by the seventeenth
take I was thinking, Oh my God, I am ruining this movie! And it was like that for five months.

BONG knows exactly what he wants and he simply never gives up until he gets it. Very tough but very admirable. By the middle of the shoot I so thoroughly identified with Mother just looking at
WON Bin (Do-joon) would make me cry. I had to unwind quite a bit after the shooting wrapped. The whole experience was like a dream, and very hard to let go. Of course, I am wracked with a new anxiety. Half anxious, half expectant, thinking about how the audience will respond [to her].

WON BIN, DO-JOON

Do-joon, the nave and simple son that gets mixed up in murder - Dont mess with me. Today, I went to the police station!

Mothers twenty-seven-year-old son Do-joon is a true innocent, but in reality his life is an endless series of hazards. An entirely dependent adult ironically gifted with striking beauty, no one in the village takes him seriously as a person. Seen merely as an extension of his mother, all in the village are stunned when the police arrest him for the murder of a teenager. Blessed with untarnished beauty and boyish charm, WONBin has consistently been cast as the ideal younger brother and son in the Korean cinema. He left lasting impressions on audiences the world over for the Korean War epic TAEGUKGI and the powerful human drama MY BROTHER. WON Bin returns to the big screen after a five-year hiatus, portraying a complex character belied by seemingly simplistic behavior. Viewers will be taken aback by his nuanced performance, and realize once and for all that WON Bin is much more than a pretty face.

Interview with WON Bin

When I read the screenplay for MOTHER, I had a strong sense that it would be a turning point in my acting career. Do-joon is not an easy role to play. He is, frankly, frustrating, even though it is due to the fact that he is a true innocent. The risk of the viewers rejecting him is definitely there. Director BONG Joon-ho expressed strong dislike for an "acting-like" performance that would draw attention to itself and not to the character. But he is astonishingly caring as a director, very sensitive to [actors]needs. I had to find a way to portray innocence itself, not just project an innocent look. This whole task was overwhelmingly difficult but was also tremendously appealing. I had a ball discovering the parts of myself that I was not aware of. I learned so much from just observing Ms. KIM Hye-ja. I cannot think of a better role model for an actor. This was my first feature film project after four years away, but every day on the set was so joyful, full of excitement and adventure. I really thank Mr. BONG for casting me in this role, one that any actor would have gone out on his limb to nab.

OTHER CHARACTERS

Jin-tae, Do-joons friend: "Don't trust anyone, even me. You go out and find the real killer."
Do-joon's only friend appears to be a jobless country bumpkin but in fact he is equipped with sharp survival instincts
and is not afraid to use them. Is he truly trying to help Do-joon or is he merely interested in exploiting him?

Je-mun, the lieutenant: Regarding Do-joon, his case is closed. Its finished, 100%.
A veteran cop in a sleepy small town suddenly faced with a horrifying murder case. A family friend close enough to
Mother to call her "Mom," he desperately wants to clear Do-joon's name... or does he?

Hong-jo, the sergeant: Why didnt you put up a marker next to the body, with your name written right on it?"
Je-mun's hard-nosed junior partner is convinced of Do-joons guilt, and is willing to resort to violence to get a confession. Will his cops instincts turn out to be superior to Je-mun's?

The major crimes chief: How long has it been since we had a murder case?
The disinterested and detached Chief. Briefly energized by a bona fide murder case, he soon reverts to lazy habits and does his damnedest to throw the book at Do-joon and close the case.

Attorney Gong: "If this were Seoul, the fee we're charging wouldn't cover an assault case involving two broken teeth!
The self-proclaimed super-lawyer. Ironically he has a stronger conviction about Do-joons guilt than the police! His apathetic efforts to "free" Do-joon end up adding fuel to the fire of Mother's burning determination to catch the murderer herself.

Mi-sun, Mothers friend: Do-Joons eyes are a work of art. Like a deers.
The owner of a photo studio in the village and anybody's dream neighbor. She rallies behind her friends lonely endeavor to clear her son's name. To Mi-sun, who dreams of motherhood for herself, the loving relationship between Mother and Do-joon is inspiring.

Ah-jung, the girl
A girl who had to support a dementia-ravaged grandmother, bereft of any love and protection. The afternoon her bloody corpse is displayed for all villagers to see is the day the life-and-death struggle to clear Do-joons name begins

Actress Kim Hye-ja: the Audrey Hepburn of Korea

Actress Kim Hye-ja took in her 51st child in Liberia, Africa, on May 5. Her latest child is an eight-month-old Liberian orphan named Kotati.

As a goodwill ambassador of the non-profit Christian relief organization World Vision, Kim has traveled to war and disaster stricken countries like Ethiopia, India and Sierra Leone and sponsored children suffering from hunger and disease. She makes donations every month and visits the children whenever she is available. Where does her boundless love come from?

Creating the Image of a Traditional Mother

Kim became an actress in 1962, signing a contract with KBS while still attending Ewha Women's University. Since then, she has appeared in 90 television dramas including "A Rural Diary," "What is Love," "Two Women," "The Sea of Mother," and "Roses and Bean Sprouts." She has also appeared in 13 plays including "Shirley Valentine," as well as various movies such as "In Late Fall" and "Mayonnaise."

Particularly, Kim created the image of a virtuous and loving traditional mother while appearing in the drama "Rural Diary" for 20 years. We can recall our own affectionate and heart-warming mothers through her.

But she has not built up the image of a mother only on the screen. Kim was reborn as a genuine archetypal mother of our era by traveling through war and poverty-hit African countries and other regions and participating in relief work for 14 years

The First Step toward Africa

Kim Hye-ja first visited Africa in the summer of 1992 after finishing the mega-hit drama "What is Love?" She had received a phone call from World Vision while preparing for a trip to Prague and Budapest with her daughter.

The relief organization told her that Korea had been a beneficiary of foreign aid and it was time for the country to help other countries in need. Persuaded by the conversation, Kim cancelled her East European trip and headed for Ethiopia. That was her first step toward participating in relief work in Africa.

"I Hope I Won't Come to a Country Like This Again

When departing for the African country, she thought that it would just be a simple trip to Ethiopia. However, after arriving in the country, Kim found that the harsh reality of life there was totally different from what she expected. She realized for the first time that such a large number of people were dying from starvation. Tears ceaselessly flowed from her eyes; she constantly wept while she was in the country, even during her sleep.

Kim was so shocked by the miserable state of children dying from hunger that she prayed on the plane returning home, "My God, please don't make me go to a country like that again." She complained to God, asking why He had created Africa just to put so many people in pain and why the guiltless, innocent children were dying.

But now, Kim doesn't resent God; rather, she thanks Him for sending her to Africa. She thinks that God sent her to those countries because there is something she can do there. She decided to spend the rest of her life serving other people.

"Don't Beat Them even with Flowers"

Since the shocking encounter with the poor and wretched in Africa, Kim has met children and women in refugee camps around the globe for more than 10 years. Based on her experiences, she published a book entitled "Don't beat Them Even with Flowers" in 2004.

Kim says in her book, "If you have something to eat in the refrigerator, can put on clothes, live under a roof and have a place to sleep, you are better off than 70 percent of the people living in the world. If you have never experienced the dangers of war, imprisonment, torture or hunger, you are happier than 500 million people in the world."

On every page of the book, she appeals to the world not to turn a blind eye to the affliction facing African children.

Kim willingly donated the 62 million won (about US$62,000) earned by her book to children who were the victims of an explosion disaster in the North Korean city of Ryoingchon. She will donate all future proceeds from the book over the next 10 years to poor North and South Korean children.

While holding an autograph session in Busan after publishing the book, she received a white envelope from a man. Twenty thousand won was in the envelope, and the man told her to spend the money on relief work. Kim says with a smile, "If I had not published the book, I would not have experienced such happy moments such as this."

A Genuine Star

While participating in relief work traveling around poverty-stricken countries, Kim has acquired new habits. First, she doesn't waste any food and eats every last bit of every meal, thinking of all the children suffering from hunger. Second, when buying goods, she calculates, "How many African Children can go to school and eat for a month with this amount of money?"

Working as a goodwill ambassador of World Vision, Kim has turned into a mother figure for starving people throughout the world. Kim says, "Charity is to bestow a favor on people in need. By helping them, we feel joyful, and that's a reward in itself."

It is definitely difficult for a star to be loved by the public for a long period of time. Most celebrities become forgotten over time, and the public is usually enthralled with a star for only a short period. What is the hallmark of a genuine star, then?

Audrey Hepburn, who shot to stardom after starring in the movie "Roman Holiday," retired from the showbiz industry in 1989. Until she died in 1993 at the age of 64, she played the leading role in relief work for starving African children. She is remembered as a timeless star now. If one is a genuine star, they will gleam brightly and still be remembered even after their death. That is why we can call Kim Hye-ja the Audrey Hepburn of Korea without hesitation.

A meaningful story can be found in Kim's book "Don't Beat Them Even With Flowers." In front of God, a person demands, "Why is there sadness and anguish in the world, even though you are present?" God answers, "That is why I sent you into the world."

Perhaps we all live in the world for just one simple reason. Kim has found her simple reason and has put her idea into action. She is truly a beautiful woman.

Finally! Family (mother-son/child) stories are really the absolute tearjerkers and always a fave with public.

Good to see Won Bin back with a new project. Love him in Taegukgi and Ad Madness. blush.gif I'm not too familiar with Kim Hye Ja (can anyone list her previous work, please) but I'm sure she'll be great. The senior Korean actors are always the awesome ones in various series & movies.

Thanks Huang for the thread & good info.

Wah.. it's from director of 'The Host', too.

Seems this movie may be a re-make of a Japanese movie, see http://movie.daum.net/movieInfoPhotoTalk/m...archValue=45546

More on veteran actress Kim Hye Ja on page 2 (posted by KDRAMAFANUSA).

Director, BONG Joon-ho

After completing only three feature films—BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE, MEMORIES OF MURDER and THE HOST-writer and director BONG Joon-ho’s undeniable talent pushed him to the forefront of the Korean film industry. MEMORIES OF MURDER was a gripping thriller about a series of unsolved murders in the 1980s. THE HOST followed a family as they dealt with a monster that rose from the Han River in the middle of Seoul. The films of BONG Joon-ho regularly, and brilliantly, break with convention, thanks to an imagination that is not confined to the accepted parameters of humor, suspense, or horror.

BONGJoon-ho remains a director of intimacy even as he puts himself in the public eye, and despite holding the Korean box office admissions record (with 13 million for THE HOST), he chose to examine the simple figure of the mother for his latest film. MOTHER dissolves Korean social reality and family drama in a vat of larger-than-life imagination. BONGturns his camera on a figure well known to all, once again exploring it through unexpected cinematographic aspects.

Finally! Family (mother-son/child) stories are really the absolute tearjerkers and always a fave with public.

Good to see Won Bin back with a new project. Love him in Taegukgi and Ad Madness. blush.gif I'm not too falimiar with Kim Hye Ja (can anyone list her previous work, please) but I'm sure she'll be great. The senior Korean actors are awesomeones in various series & movies.

Thanks Huang for the thread & good info.

Wah.. it's from director of 'The Host', too.

Kim Hye Ja is a 'talent', acts more in drama, latest is in the drama, Mom is dead upset.
She has 2 earlier movies, Mayonnaise (1999) and Late Autumn 만추 (1981).

Dont mention it.
Ya, I was getting kind of worried that he was not cast in anything after discharge from army (whereas Jang Hyuk had like 2 drama and 1 movie already, plus a kid !).

Huangsy, he has fully recovered from his injury and re-appeared again in September 2007 only. We know he was choosing his comeback project so I never worry about him. It's just whether there's good scenario and good role that he feels attached to. Finally! He picked this one! I like movie about criminal and judicial system. That's why I am so glad to hear the news today!!!
