Won and Kim to head Bong's "Mother"
Written by Han Sunhee
SEOUL 'Korean Wave' star Won Bin and veteran actress Kim Hye-Ja have been set as the stars of "The Host" helmer Bong Joon-ho's new pic "Mother."
Project was presented, without cast, last month at the HAF project mart in Hong Kong by producer and artist management group Barunson.
Scripted by Bong and Park Eun-kyo, story sees an asocial loser framed as the perpetrator of an horrific murder and his hard-headed mother has to figure out who really did it to keep her son from prison.
Pic will be produced on a $5 million budget by Barunson's Choi Jae-won and Seo Woo-sik, with lensing in the fall. CJ Entertainment will handle local Korean distribution and international sales.
"Mother" is the first movie for Won since his starring role in B.O. record breaker "Taegukgi" and "My Brother" nearly four years ago.''I want to make the saddest yet most beautiful crime drama ever," Bong said. "At the center of this story is a small and weak mother who stands alone, a woman so determined that she can't even stop herself.''

Introduction
When the record-breaking Korean box office hit The Host was selected for Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 2006, it encouraged director Bong Joon-ho to push the boundaries of Korean cinema even further. In his hard-hitting new crime drama, Mother, the lead character is not a detective but a devoted and determined mother. When her son is accused of a horrible murder in their neighborhood, her maternal instinct forces her to conduct her own investigation, one that will uncover dangerous secrets as she unravels the mysterious truth.

Dont trust anyone.
You go out and find the real killer...
Synopsis
Hye-ja is a single mom to 27-year-old Do-joon. Her son is her raison dtre. Though an adult in years, Do-joon is nave and dependent on his mother, and sometimes behaves in ways that are stupid or simply dangerous. He is a constant source of anxiety for everyone. One day a young girl is found dead in an abandoned building and Do-joon is accused of her murder. An inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force that closes Do-joons case too quickly inspire his mother to act on her ownto act as Mother in its purest form. Summoning all her maternal instincts and trusting no one, she sets out to find a killer and prove her sons innocence.
Directors comment
Everyone has a mother, and everyone has a precise idea of what a mother is. This is the person that cherishes each of us most, who is the most gentle to us, and the most irritating. Many feelings collide on this issue. This is a person that we know well, and who is strong.
The relationship between a son and his mother is the basis for all human relationships. Countless novels, films, and television programs have approached the mother figure, but I wanted to explore it for myself, and see where I could take it on the cinematographic level. And push it to the extreme.
I wanted to make a film that digs profoundly at what is extreme and powerful, like in the heart of a fireball. In this sense, MOTHER is a challenge for me because my preceding films were all stories that tended towards extension; if a murder allowed me to discuss the 80s in Korea, and a monster allowed me to speak about family and the United States, then MOTHER is quite the contrary. It is a film wherein all the forces converge at the heart of things. The figure of the mother has been seen before, its very banal, but I see this as a new approach, and I hope it will be perceived that way. Like something that is familiar from home, but really came from abroad.

Info
KIM HYE-JA, MOTHER
The mother that is drawn into a fight to save her son from accusations of murder -You and me are oneWeve only got each other.
A single mother living with her mentally challenged son, Do-joon. Working at an apothecary, she is not above engaging in illegal activities to help him. Do-joon is her reason for being. When his happiness is threatened, Mother steps into a world of unimaginable chaos and hideous revelations. The star of THE RUSTIC DIARY, one of the longest running and most beloved television series in Korean history, KIM Hye-ja nonetheless struggled with the stereotypical image of an endlessly tolerant, boundlessly loving mother. With MOTHER, this Grand Dame of acting has completely subverted the almost sacred maternal image she helped construct over the last thirty years. KIMHye-jas profoundly revolutionary performance as a mother whose courage and resolution are tested is sure to be 2009s biggest surprise.
Interview with KIM Hye-ja
It was in 2004 when a young director came looking for me, wanting to make a film with me. That was how I met BONG Joon-ho. What really struck me then was that he remembered some dialogue and performances from old TV dramas I had made with great accuracy and fondness. I was taken aback that he could remember all that. I was away from the film industry in recent years because, lets be honest, there werent good new roles written for someone like me. What they were sending me was the same old stuff. But MOTHER was quite different. Director BONG explained how he wanted to challenge the stereotype. Another difference was that in TV dramas, they all had the attitude, Ms. KIM, you are such a veteran, I think you know what to do. But I was determined to do something different this time, so I asked BONG to push me to the extreme. And he was only happy to oblige! On the first shoot we did eighteen takes, some kind of a record for me, and by the seventeenth
take I was thinking, Oh my God, I am ruining this movie! And it was like that for five months.
BONG knows exactly what he wants and he simply never gives up until he gets it. Very tough but very admirable. By the middle of the shoot I so thoroughly identified with Mother just looking at
WON Bin (Do-joon) would make me cry. I had to unwind quite a bit after the shooting wrapped. The whole experience was like a dream, and very hard to let go. Of course, I am wracked with a new anxiety. Half anxious, half expectant, thinking about how the audience will respond [to her].
WON BIN, DO-JOON
Do-joon, the nave and simple son that gets mixed up in murder - Dont mess with me. Today, I went to the police station!
Mothers twenty-seven-year-old son Do-joon is a true innocent, but in reality his life is an endless series of hazards. An entirely dependent adult ironically gifted with striking beauty, no one in the village takes him seriously as a person. Seen merely as an extension of his mother, all in the village are stunned when the police arrest him for the murder of a teenager. Blessed with untarnished beauty and boyish charm, WONBin has consistently been cast as the ideal younger brother and son in the Korean cinema. He left lasting impressions on audiences the world over for the Korean War epic TAEGUKGI and the powerful human drama MY BROTHER. WON Bin returns to the big screen after a five-year hiatus, portraying a complex character belied by seemingly simplistic behavior. Viewers will be taken aback by his nuanced performance, and realize once and for all that WON Bin is much more than a pretty face.
Interview with WON Bin
When I read the screenplay for MOTHER, I had a strong sense that it would be a turning point in my acting career. Do-joon is not an easy role to play. He is, frankly, frustrating, even though it is due to the fact that he is a true innocent. The risk of the viewers rejecting him is definitely there. Director BONG Joon-ho expressed strong dislike for an "acting-like" performance that would draw attention to itself and not to the character. But he is astonishingly caring as a director, very sensitive to [actors]needs. I had to find a way to portray innocence itself, not just project an innocent look. This whole task was overwhelmingly difficult but was also tremendously appealing. I had a ball discovering the parts of myself that I was not aware of. I learned so much from just observing Ms. KIM Hye-ja. I cannot think of a better role model for an actor. This was my first feature film project after four years away, but every day on the set was so joyful, full of excitement and adventure. I really thank Mr. BONG for casting me in this role, one that any actor would have gone out on his limb to nab.
OTHER CHARACTERS
Jin-tae, Do-joons friend: "Don't trust anyone, even me. You go out and find the real killer."
Do-joon's only friend appears to be a jobless country bumpkin but in fact he is equipped with sharp survival instincts
and is not afraid to use them. Is he truly trying to help Do-joon or is he merely interested in exploiting him?
Je-mun, the lieutenant: Regarding Do-joon, his case is closed. Its finished, 100%.
A veteran cop in a sleepy small town suddenly faced with a horrifying murder case. A family friend close enough to
Mother to call her "Mom," he desperately wants to clear Do-joon's name... or does he?
Hong-jo, the sergeant: Why didnt you put up a marker next to the body, with your name written right on it?"
Je-mun's hard-nosed junior partner is convinced of Do-joons guilt, and is willing to resort to violence to get a confession. Will his cops instincts turn out to be superior to Je-mun's?
The major crimes chief: How long has it been since we had a murder case?
The disinterested and detached Chief. Briefly energized by a bona fide murder case, he soon reverts to lazy habits and does his damnedest to throw the book at Do-joon and close the case.
Attorney Gong: "If this were Seoul, the fee we're charging wouldn't cover an assault case involving two broken teeth!
The self-proclaimed super-lawyer. Ironically he has a stronger conviction about Do-joons guilt than the police! His apathetic efforts to "free" Do-joon end up adding fuel to the fire of Mother's burning determination to catch the murderer herself.
Mi-sun, Mothers friend: Do-Joons eyes are a work of art. Like a deers.
The owner of a photo studio in the village and anybody's dream neighbor. She rallies behind her friends lonely endeavor to clear her son's name. To Mi-sun, who dreams of motherhood for herself, the loving relationship between Mother and Do-joon is inspiring.
Ah-jung, the girl
A girl who had to support a dementia-ravaged grandmother, bereft of any love and protection. The afternoon her bloody corpse is displayed for all villagers to see is the day the life-and-death struggle to clear Do-joons name begins
