Consider a 5 by 5 Chess Board. Is it possible to place 5 Queens on the board such that three pawns can safely be placed on the board? (aka, by carefully choosing where to place the 5 queens, can you arrange it so that there are 3 squares on the board that none of the queens can attack)

Took me a few good minutes to come up with the solution. I'll post it later if nobody can get it.

just place the 5 queens on the other end... and the 3 pawns on the opposite? >_>?

this is confusing. I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER HOW TO PLAY CHESS.

Queens move every way possible. Up, down, left, right, and diagonal.

Queens can go completely horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.

I've done similar chess logic problems, but without pawns.
Have you done the ones with a set amount of Queens, and you have to place them all on the board without any of their movement paths conflicting?

can you give a picture to your question:

Here's an easy example of one:
You have a 4x4 chess board and 4 queens.
Place all queens on the board so that no queen blocks another's line of movement.

A solution would be: (label board A-D across, 1-4 downwards)

- A3
- B1
- C4
- D2

Here's one that's a bit harder:
You have a 5x5 chess board and 5 queens.
Place all queens on the board so that no queen blocks another's line of movement.

Now, here's a difficult one:
You have an 8x8 chess board and 8 queens.
Place all queens on the board so that no queen blocks another's line of movement.

Oh that was in Professor Layton. I got up to the 8x8 chessboard (with 8 Queens). It took me forever to solve.

The yellow are the paths the queens placed can take.
The green is the space that the queens can't touch.
You can rearrange the 5 queens in any space you like, as long as there are 3 "untouched" squares for the pawns to lay.

omg... you dont know how long it took me (and how many chess boards to draw) before i came up with an answer...

ok so i don't have any visuals cuz idk how to use something like drawing on mac, but just pretend that there's A-E (vertical lines), 1-5 (horizontal lines)
so i think the queens can go on A1, A2, C1, D1, and D2
the pawns have space on B5, E4, and E5.
right? =[
yeah, haha im on spring break and I just used about an hour to figure this out xP (my parents think I'm studying... shhhh)

EDIT:: now that i look at it, nak3d's got the right answer except just need to add the one queen. and mine is similar, just turned sideways or something

That's what I meant, forgot to add it in photoshop.
