Hey! I'm currently a sophomore in highschool and I was wondering if I should take both the Act and the SAT. For the those who took both, which one did you think was easier?

I'm definitely taking the SAT but was thinking if I should take the ACT also.. (Act has science tears.gif )
Does the science in ACT cover everything? (as in biology, chemistry, physics, etc)

AH help me decide peeps. Thanks!

Sorry for bombarding you guys w/ more questions but would the colleges take it as a PLUS if I take both and do well on both?? Hehe. Thanks! biggrin.gif

My dream/goal school: Northwestern
Secondary/Backup: USC, UC's, NYU

I don't really know the standards where you live, but I would advice you to take both. I live in Mississippi,
and in Mississippi, the ACT is required. Unless you've gotten your GED or some other factors. You can take the
SAT, but its really optional.

I heard that ACT's were ridiculously easy, but I never actually tried it so I wouldn't know. Why don't you just take both? ^^

dont be afraid of the science portion on the ACT...i honestly didn't know anything...like NOTHING at all and im not just saying that. i seriously mean it. and i still scored a 28 on the science part!
i dont even know what was on it...it covered everything...lots of stats and weird things. there was some physics ummm...just idk. i hate science haha.

anyway i prefer the ACT...the time doesn't bug me. it's really straight forward and simple.
+ my act score was 100x better than my sat score!

how long do they give you to complete it?

anyone knows if ...
does taking both the ACT & SAT looks good on your college applications?
&is it required in CA, NY, and MA? D:

My guidance counselor told us that colleges usually look at either the ACT or SAT, so I'm not sure taking both will really look better. Personally, I prefer SAT over ACT, cuz it's only 3 subject areas.

i forgot how long the sections were...you can look it up though

and just send in your highest score...most schools will accept either
i sent in my act score, not sat, to all the schools i applied to

i warn you though....if you apply to a UC, you MUST take the two SAT IIs. i just assumed it was optional, didn't take them, and thus didn't apply to any UC. (just the public ones...schools like usc don't require the sat ii)

^also if you're applying to ivy league schools, they require at least 2 (some require 3).

Check with the schools you're applying to to make sure you meet their testing requirements.

As for me, I took the SAT twice, got 2050 first time 2060 the second time (2100 counting individual sections).

I took the ACT once and got 34 (which is equivalent to 2240 on the SAT i think?)

So yeah, I basically took the ACT at the last minute and didn't really study and still got a pretty decent score (much higher than the SATs anyway, which I studied a lot for).

And yes like they say above me, don't be scared of the science portion of the ACT. They don't require you to know any knowledge, just know how to analyze data and just very basic knowledge in science (I got a 36, which is a perfect, on the science portion even though I ran outta time and just quickly glanced over the last few problems).

I live in California and attend an extremely competitive public school

Ah, I suggest that you take both. California is way more competitive than Mississippi.

yeah, same here! I got about the same score on the science portion too, and I suck at science
Plus I found it to be such a relief that they don't penalize for guessing! so I bubbled in C for all the questions I didn't have time to answer (I read somewhere that's the most common answer). I thought the math was a lot easier than on the SAT too.

i thought overall, the ACT was a lot easier than the SAt. haha =] but definitely take both. my ACT was higher than SAT, so when colleges ask for my score, i sent the ACT [if they accept it] and yeahh =]

ACT all the way, man.
i took the SAT 3 times and got almost the same score.
it wasn't worth it for me, at least.
but yeah, i also knew NOTHING about the science portion and i got a 31.
it's not as bas as you think.
you don't have to come in knowing extra stuff,
all that you need is in the test.

I took the ACT this morning and I knew absolutely nothing about the
science portion. I haven't even taken Chemistry and Physics yet or Geometry.
So yeah, I was guessing on a lot of them.

I suggest that you take both cus they're different tests.
I got perfect score on ACT math & reading comp, but not on the SAT.
But on the ACT, the science score made my avg score go down by a few points.

science today for the act was pretty ridiculous..
thought the writing/math were definitely a lot easier than sat though
