Although I'm not a business major I don't think double majoring in the field of business, for what it's worth, is really as advantageous as it seems (especially if it'll take extra years). If I was to restart college, I would probbaly single major in management with a semi-light course load (which will also help grades) and get a job in corporate company somewhere. That's just me...

anyways to answer you're question, if i had to, I would choose: 'management' and 'information design and corporate communication' and a 'health and industry' minor. why? so I can make bank working in some crazy biotech company

I'm majoring in business administration, and i wanna do marketing after that (studies are different here...) anyways, to answer your question... you can do whatever you like, coz everything could go perfectly with management, like finance or marketing, or Information Systems Audit and Control if you like controling and stuff, it's whatever you like to work after that... and about minors, it's about whatever you like too but i could recommend: Behavioral Issues in Management, International Economics or Information Design and Corporate Communication... if you like it
Good luck with everything ^^

some of the worst decisions that people make in the business world happen when they decide to get into something that they have no idea of in the first place. if a person invest's money into a company they don't know about, in most cases they take a big loss.

how much is your time and money [tuition] worth? when investing what you have, it's best to figure out what it is you're putting all that sweat and blood into in the first place. or you're depending on pure luck to help you reach your destination. depending on where you want to go, it would be worth asking for more than a general direction.

if you really want to double major, i recommend doing accy and finance. make your tuition go toward actually learning something; a major called management sounds useless to me. its not like companies hire managers from a pool of management majors, unless you want to manage a walgreens or something

im asking help becuase i want to know people's opinion so that i could see the pro's and cons of each are of business.
im only a sophomore at highschool and i just want info on different areas of business.
and im interested in business as a whole, not just one certain part. So its hard for me to decide on something thats why i want to learn a bit about each area of business.

and Management is greatly useful becuase i want to go down the lane of entreprenuership and without management, i would fail in any business area.
Mangement "sounds" useless but its really not. Its hard to imagine why based on definitions of mangement but its way more than that ^^. My dad isnt in the business side but his friends who double major in management and something else are really smart. A lot of them do not regret taking management.

For everyone/
I appreciate those who are helping me with this.
and also, please tell me why you think what you think.

From what I've seen, Management majors all seemed to go into HR. If you have the time and patience, I'd have to say Accounting. I think employers like people with an accounting background more than anything.

Just fyi, Accounting and Information Systems seems to be the best combo, but Accounting's hard for me so I chose Finance and Information Systems. If I had to do it over again, it would be Accounting and Information Systems.

i never disagreed with management, or that you shouldn't do a double major with management involved. it's important to know how to manage people. the first step would be earning your way into management, but once you get there, it's important to understand how to motivate your people to do their best.

what i disagree with is your approach. your dad's friends may have known what they were getting into and felt that management was exactly what they needed in order to go down their path. on the other hand, you seem to have little idea of what you want to do at all, and it sounds like you're slapping on management simply because you think it's useful.

on that note, if you're really interested in management, here's a good suggestion for you. there's a book called "Winning" by Jack Welch. He used to be the CEO of GE and was labeled as 'manager of the century' by Fortune magazine. He had a big hand in turning GE from a $14 billion company into a $410 billion company over the span of roughly 20 years, making GE the largest and most valuable company in the entire world around the time he retired.

His book, "Winning" is (I think) hands down one of the best management book you could ever read. I'm not the only one that think so either. You can add Warren Buffet and Bill Gates and Rudy Giuliani to the list. If you're serious about management, get the book and read it. I think you don't need a couple years worth of courses for management, and a handful of books like this will do. But that's just my own personal opinion. Your choice is yours. I'm just pushing you to make a better decision, not a different one.

Best wishes

thankyou for the book the book name. Dont get me wrong, i wasnt yelling at you or anything like that.
Becuase the thing is, my high school is big in business.
They offer me management, marketing, accounting, financial planning, business law, and tons of others similar business courses. So im learning a lot from it. And there are all types of mangent, ex. Product Mangement. They do things like:
Defining new products
Gathering market requirements
Building product roadmap.
Product Life Cycle considerations
Product differentiation
more detail on Product planning
its not risky. People tend to think management is super risky but it isnt true at all. Or take marketing management. They do so many things that it amazes me. When they think of management, they think of big companies and the CEO's and stuff. Ofcourse, i want to read the book and find out how to manage and stuff. ah, i dont want to sound mean or anything, and im not intending it to sound mean either. i hate pointing out someone when they're wrong esp. on internet becuase we dont know eachother. ex. someone wouldnt know what are my strengths etc. I been learning and developing business plans this year outside of school and we have huge company CEO's that come and talk to us about it...for like...3 hours-quite long and boring becuase most of them think they're funny but they're not. They talk about all aspects of it. well, anyways, i been participating in business related things in school and outside of school for a while now so in quite serious into becoming a manager. and im totally not asking people to randomly select a major for me. The thing is, i know about mangement and marketting, economics, finance but i want to know what the others are. like the point of this thread is so i can know more about them instead of randomly going into a major i dont like ya know?
Im sorry if i sound mean. its seriously not intended to sound mean.
I think you just had a bit of misunderstanding that i wanted to clear up.
Please dont take this personally becuase i cant take it if others think im mean.

I go to Bryant which is a mostly business school. I've found that most people don't and can't really decide on their major/minor until they start taking some classes. I don't know what it will be like where you are going, but at Bryant everyone takes like the 101 equivalent for Management, Finance, Marketing, Information Systems, and Accounting. Most people decide once they do one of each, which, with all the other prerequisites we are required to take, takes 2 years.

Unless you are so decided on management and another major, you should keep your options open at first.

I guess it depends where you go, but here at Bryant you aren't allowed to double major or even major and minor in 2 business areas, the other has to be a liberal arts. Doing 2 business majors just seems like a waste and it would be boring, really.

Thats my advice.

nothing personal at all, no need to apologize. tell it like it is and stand up for yourself. i don't really see coming onto soompi forums for these type of questions as the best place to go, especially considering your school offers you such an extensive background into business as well as opportunities to hear from and meet CEO's.

by the way... you're mean!! tongue2.gif

hehe.. just kidding laugh.gif
good luck!

I don't think there's any "best" combination but it depends on what you're interested in doing in the future. At our school you can have dual majors (kinda like double major but less requirements). For example my BF was dual major in marketing and management, some of my friends were Finance/Insurance, Finance/MIS, International Business/Marketing, etc. If the college you goes to has something like that, I suggest dual major rather than double major. I know people who double majored but it was never in the same kind of field (like one of my friends was a English/Music Business double major)... I agree with whoever said doing double major in business is kinda redundant. Oh yea, and minors are pretty much useless so don't even bother with that. Most colleges have core requirements you have to fulfill as part of your major and you're allotted a decent amount of time to take electives. If you end up really liking another subject and want it as your minor, go ahead, but don't go out of your way to do it.

watcher: yea, my school has lots of business things but not like..everything i listed there. thats why i wanted to know about the rest.

klx13: so wait, suppose i go to college, am i not going to have time for minor? is that what you meant cuz of all the requirements? i didnt know that. Minors..im interested in some things like things like psycology and sociology. I know i wont use those two ever but will it mess me up if i take them?Cuz i wanted to do those two out of interest but i dont want it to conflict with other things.

Oh no, that's not what I meant. You'll have time for a minor but I personally don't think it's important to have to "declare" a minor officially. Majority of my friends in college didn't minor in anything and they're fine. You'll have time to take classes you're interested in. That's what electives are for :]

haha.. i used to be a business major with social-psyche minor. i eventually graduated with a degree in comp sci and no minor at all. you'll have plenty of time to squeeze in a minor, but if you decide on a dual business focus in addition to a minor, expect to take summer school. smile.gif
