Anybody go to Northeastern University by any chance? It's not one of those "well known" schools but if anybody goes to NU or knows anything about the school please let me know. blush.gif

I'll be going there next year and it's pretty far away from my home (WA) so I'm really nervous XD
Any advice would be WONDERFUL.

I have tons of friends that go to NU, because I'm from Boston, and I almost went there myself. It's actually a well known school here in MA, mainly due to their co-op program. If you have any specific questions, you can let me know.

Northeastern is not a well-known school on the west coast right now, but eventually its name will branch out. In the 1990s, it was very much a regional school where the only people who attended Northeastern were residence of New England, with the occasional out-of-state student. It was a good school, but it has changed a lot over the years. From what I know, there is a lot more research going on, and it has steadily risen in the rankings and has been noted as a school that will rise even higher in rankings with time. It won't be a household name, but sooner or later people will note that they have heard of it at one time or another (or maybe they'll confuse it with Northwestern, which is in Illinois).

Like someone mentioned, their co-op program is ranked number one out of the nation (either #1 or #2-- I know Drexel University is up there as well). The reason why I attended my school, which is literally right across the street from Northeastern, is because of my co-op program. It is something you should look into when you think about attending Northeastern.

The people are good looking (Northeastern is noted for having very attractive students-- I must admit that my friends and I always rant, "Why didn't we go to NEU?!"). The campus was voted one of the best urban campus setting in the nation, and I can attest to it. I pass by Boston University's campus as well as Northeastern's campus everyday, and I love NEU's campus much more than BU's (BU is very gothic and traditional, and all of the people I met complain about how ugly their campus is). There are shops and places built nearby its campus for the sole reason of catering to Northeastern students, and there is always something to do.. that is, if you seek out to do something.

To be honest, I don't really hear many complaints about Northeastern besides its very high tuition. A lot of people have to turn down NEU because of the lack of funding they receive, and it is a realistic concern for almost any student that attends that school, especially considering the high prices of living in Boston. Oh yes, living in Boston is another commodity that almost every out-of-state NEU student miss. I had no clue it costs this much to live here (In the 20+ section, I had compiled a long post about how much I spend a month living in Boston, inside and directly outside). There is a poster here who goes to Northeastern. You should probably seek out for her advice, as she is in her second semester at the school.

- get the 10 meal plan, the others are a waste of money. you'll feel obliged to eat at the dhall all the time if you have the 15 or 19 plan and boston has great food so you'll want to be able to eat out once in a while if not all the time
- some areas are sketchier than others, ie. fens, mission hill, occasionally columbus ave, westland ave, parts of st. stephen's. you dont want to be walking around alone at night if you're in those places
- you'll probably come across a lot of red tape in the administration. take initiative cuz nobody will be running after you if you dont have your requirements down, dont turn in hw etc. make sure you know what's due when, what you need for ur major etc. profs are generally understanding so try to talk to them in advance if something comes up
- you're wasting your time here if you're not going to go on at least 1 co-op
- infocommons is your best friend if you need a place to print, but dont even think about going 5 mins before class if it's 11am-3pm cuz you'll be massively late due to lack of available computers and a long ass printing line. (the asian american center has free printing! it's kind of far from campus though)
- student organizations will make the school seem smaller since you'll see a lot of the same faces
- the gym is insanely nice. and free. use it to your advantage
- get excited about boston sports and be prepared to hate the yankees

that's all the advice for now. post if you have anymore specific Q's. im gonna be a sophomore in the fall btw smile.gif ps, i had my work study at the asian american center and it's a good place to hang out, do hw or meet other asian ppl if you're into that sorta thing. yay AAC (:

pps, what major are you and where are you living? i could give you some info about the res halls if you want, im on a roll already lol

i applied last year and got accepted so im gonna be attending there this coming fall (which is like in a few weeks :] )
im not sure how competitive neu really is. sounds dumb huh cuz i applied there. but i actually happened to apply there by chance. didnt even know it was in boston till later. didnt really do much research, just had some help from someone. was my only out of state school and now i somehow ended up going there. i heard that neu's percent of acceptance was a lot lower than bu tho. i think bu was around 50% and neu was 39% or something. those are my estimations from what i recall from something someone posted. are you planning to apply? i personally dont think its THAT hard to get into because i didnt really do my best in high school. so....this is what i personally think. anyone is free to correct me if they feel i said something wrong.

im going into my senior year high school right now but i wanna go to this school next year. so i was just wondering.. what do you mean by not that hard to get into? cuz i had really bad grades in ninth grade [2 c's mostly B's] but i improved 10th grade and started getting mostly A's in junior year. do you think i could get in? and what were your stats? right now, i think my gpa's around 3.8

thank you!

I got rejected applying as a freshie with a 3.6 gpa. I got accepted as a transfer with a 3.9 gpa. I had really bad SAT scores, I didn't even break 1500. I think the only reason I got in as a transfer was because I was smart in how I applied. Last year I applied undeclared, but this year I applied as a communications major and I also sent in a documentary that I had made. I think I really stood out as an Asian-American Com Major/ Film minor.

The goal is to differentiate yourself from the competition. =p

umm....well first off. i dont think your freshman grades count. or if they do, it is of small significance. i actually did pretty ok in freshman year. i think 4 As and 2 Bs. but thats freshman year...do i wish that was my senior year. it got slowly worse after that. sadly, my senior year was my worst grades ever. i was caught in the whole senioritis and everything. i didnt do anything. anyway, to me it looks like you have a good chance to get in. what are your act/sat scores? i used to get only As and Bs but in my junior year i took ap bio and that was a pain in my butt. cuz he made us do so much reading and nothing was really clear when things were due. i was scared i would fail. but i got a C luckily. and mind that that is junior year. would look bad right? and i also got 1 semester C in us history (hate history and i never read the text). so got 2 Cs in junior year. and you have mostly As in your junior year? your grades look way better than mine. now comes senior year. oh boy was that badddd. i was an idiot and decided to take ap physics when i couldnt even handle ap bio in junior year. so that class killed me. i got Ds both semesters. really bad. i was afraid id get rescinded or something but luckily they still let me come. yea thats what i got for being lazy. i seriously worried the whole year. not a good idea. should still work decently in senior year. and not only the D from physics but i got a C in calc too. dont my grades look really bad? 1st sem averages 3.0, and 2nd i averaged a 2.8.. something. i was so shocked senior year cuz i never got below 3.0. and i didnt take the SAT cuz im bad with vocab and stuff and i cant remember any historical events or books for the essay part. so i took the ACT and got a 30. which is about 1980? 1920? i dunno but yea 19..something. so its not that great. haha my stats isnt something to brag cuz its so bad, but watever ill let the world know cuz its done and in my past. so yea, i still got in. i think my overall gpa was about 3.3 or something. below 3.5 im sure. so i reallyyyy think youll get in. not to boast or anything...but i even got a small scholarship. i said that to make you feel more confident. i think you have a high chance. dont slack off though. oh and btw, i did early action. so that might have given my an edge. good luck with your apps and stuff! hope you get in. i havent been there yet, only visited but i really like the environment and it seems nice there. oh and im not sure how much your major counts but i think you could get in with what you want. im a music major but i applied as undecided cuz i wasnt sure so...yea good luck with everything!

wowwww, you have really good SAT grades! luckyy, i got 1770 on my first one and took SAT II korean (790) and US History (590-so embarrassing o--o). so im studying for ACT on sept, and SAT I on oct, and SAT II on november, and maybee SAT I again on Dec. my test scores are always REALLY low. i did volunteering but only about like 100 hours so far :[
what's early action? is that when you can apply early and then decide before you get accepted to other schools? or you apply early and if you get in - you HAVE to go to the school?

lol no...my SAT scores are bad. thats why i took the ACT. SAT drives me more nuts. i got like a 1750 on my first one. then i decided to take the ACT instead. you did better than me on korean. i got a 750. and math 2 i got a 690. but im sure if you study you'll do fine. i really cant sit down and study so i just took those w/o studying. but luckily like math was still a little bit in my head and korean isnt too bad so. and i only did 64 hours so youve done more than me. wow you look like you have a lot of tests to take in the future. lol i did that too. took those tests till the end! i really didnt want to take it senior year but i had no choice T.T its all over now tho. umm...early action is when you apply to the school early and they let you know about your admission like near end of dec or something. this one, you DO NOT have to go to the school. it gives you more of a chance to get in because there is less applicants so less competition and less to compare to. some school arent early action but early decision. this one you HAVE to go to the school if you do get in. you should only do this if you know you want to go there. there is no changing your mind. are you doing the common app? cuz it will tell you which school are early action or early decision. im not sure if all school have those options tho. probably not, some could be rolling too. which means it accepts applicants at like any time from a certain date i think. so those place is better to send in your apps early.
