Hi there, I have a question on what to work towards in University if my goal is to be a film producer. I've always had a major interest in the film industry and how things are organized and I just enjoy doing business (money, management, etc.)
But I'm curious as to what I should major in University? Do I finish with a Bachelor's of Commerce or Fine Arts? Or both?
Thanks.

Not sure how it is in Canada, but here we just have majors in film and within that major there are concentrations in things like production. At least at the schools which I applied to, the film majors were like that. I think people have majored in things like English or some type of art though. Majoring in both business and arts works out too, or a major and minor.

Here are a few options I can think of:
1) Major in film
1) Double major in film and business/econ. at a university that offers both majors
2) Major in one and minor in the other
3) Major in one and get a BA, then go to grad. school for the other (ex: BA in business/econ. and grad. school for film - Depending on the school, this would cost a lot of $$)
With getting into the film industry, the best thing to do is get good internships were you can gain hands on experience of how the industry works and through that process you can obtain connections and network with others in the industry, etc. and hopefully work your way up at becoming a film producer.
FYI, the film industry doesn't have a set path, hence it's a risky career to get into, but don't let that stop you from pursing your goal

as a film student i think this is one of the best replies~~producing is one of those occupations where u dont get it from a degree (not like doctor or lawyer) but where a degree just helps...
the film industry is all about connections so thats the best way to get into producing...
also make sure u understand what producing is really about...i wanted to be a producer in high school too but then i realized its completely different than what i imagined and i switched to screenwriting~~
