i already get annoyed when my sister says "wai?" or however you spell it, korean for "what"? but yeah, when my parents hear us saying korean stuff, they're just like sleep.gif . well its something i wouldn't do anyway, cause everyone would think i'm a retard since no one knows what oppa/noona means where i live, and it's kinda embarrassing. when your not korean but you still say stuff like that in korean??

I'm not Korean but my Korean friends used to call me unnie or noona all the time. I used to think it was like a pet name for about a year until I figured out what it met, then I started feeling kinda old. lol

ohmygoodness yes, i find it so annoying. especially when non-koreans try to joke around and use it to "flirt" with korean guys or something. ughhh annoys the heck out of me, and i'm not even korean D:

but honestly, korean phrases are so overused because of the popularity of kroean dramas sleep.gif;

i don't like it either.
i think it's cus i'm too "Americanized"
and i'm just better off by calling people by their names.
i don't like calling anyone Oppa or Unni's either,
except for my own sister.

I don't really mind other people using those terms. ^^
But I rarely use them.

for me personally... it kind of bothers me when anyone... korean or not... overuse these addressed term to someone they don't really know >.>. i think that it should just be used by people whom you're close with and you can call them oppa/hyung/unnie/nuna. i don't know... i just see those terms as something you would affectionately say to people who you knew for a long time. however it is different for little kids though, i don't mind them calling me unnie/nuna if i just met them cuz i think it's kind of cute... ahaha.
but gah... i've gotta admit that i have said these terms on celebrities in this forum... but that's in the past and i've grown to view these terms differently.

i only use those terms online,
i think of it as a for fun nickname.
in person, i wouldn't really do that unless i'm re-wording a phrase or line that caught my attention xD
hmm.. the only things slipping out of my mouth would be "Aya~" but it's not necessarily a korean term

what about people who are constantly talking spanglish? well in the more southern states everyone talks spanglish in high school. i;ve never found myself annoyed at someone saying, "No se" or "que" during class.

but i do find it annoying when this one vietnamese girl talks to me in viet just because I am. I only talk in viet to my friends when i;m making a rude comment about non-viets.

I sit infront of a Korean buy and a Chinese Guy
and the Chinese guy was asking the Korean what oppa and hyung meant..
so the Korean guy being cheeky said.....youre supposed to call me oppa!

So for the whole day the Chinese guy kept calling the Korean guy JAE OPPA!!

I could see how it would get annoying, but I haven't really experienced it in the sense you're talking about

I was called 'nuna' by a friend of mine in Canada because he was helping me out before I got here [Korea] with just whatever words, phrases, etc. he could. I'd feel strange using the terms but I do love hearing them from native speakers. Well...for the most part. The screeching version does kinda get to me sleep.gif;. I guess I mean I like the original idea behind the titles

Can I ask a question while I'm here though? If I want to address someone I don't really know all that well, is it alright to use -ssi? They're usually a good few years older than me, if not almost a decade. Haven't meant people my own age really so I haven't had to figure that out just yet, =p.

If they don't do that and they're talking to a japanese fob, or someone thats really into japanese manners
then it's really rude. Korean people do that too. (Ex. Name-shii, Name-Teacher, Name-Doctor, etc.)
honestly... you're not half as special as you think you are.

I'm a Korean and it doesn't bother me one bit. Lot of Koreans use American slangs/lingos so it's a non-issue for me.

We shouldn't put boundaries on how we can communicate, if it works between two parties and a clear message is sent and received then it's all good.

My friends and I call each other that sometimes as a joke, but we don't actually call every older guy we see 'Oppa' or older girl 'Unnie' unless they know what the words actually mean.
