I'm not Korean but I sometimes use dongsaeng and unnie on the internet just for the fun of it. In real life, I say ya a lot. I was using it before I even knew it meant hey in korean. Now I use it on people I know.
But if I want to call someone, I don't use those Korean terms. I make up my own smile.gif

The word "oppa" annoys me so much. Like everytime I see it, my imagination gets the best of me & I'd imagine a girl with a SUPER high pitched voice, with no physical appeal whatsoever, whining "oppa buy me this."

LMAO. I'm wierd, but that's how I am. . . ahaha. @_@
"OPPA OPPA OPPA"
stfu. ^^ hehe (random moment) :)

QUOTE (busagiboo @ Apr 9 2008, 11:22 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
This bugs me a lot too. When people who aren't Chinese start using some slang that's commonly used by Chinese people, it annoys me so much. Most of the time, they don't even know what it means, but they still use it. It sort of makes them desperate to fit in or seem like something they're not. It's such a pet peeve of mine. Obviously I'm Chinese, and when I hear people say this stuff, it just makes me angry and just so annoyed. I don't even know the fine differences between oppa, unnie, hyung, and nuna. I only know that hyung means something like a brother, but I wouldn't use these terms if I don't know the exact meanings.

I use the term gong sau because its awesome.
so you wanna gong sau since im using chinese slang?
It is the Soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of press. It is the Soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer who gives us freedom to demonstrate. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and who's coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.
Hooah!

Yes, it annoys me when I hear/see it. It makes me think they're trying too hard to be Korean.... (Sorry to those of you who say/type it.)
Especially since they don't know what it means. They're just using it cuz they see others saying it and think it's cute or something. ==''

i end up using 언니 and 오빠 quite often, and i am not korean.. but, i actually speak and understand korean, and the people that i call 언니 and 오빠 really need to be called that. i can't just call someone older than me by their name - that's too direct and could even be seen as rude. and i'm not going to call someone i'm close with 선배 or 선생님.. that's just awkward.. though i usually ask first. or people tell me to call them 언니 or 오빠. though most of the korean people i know are younger than me, so i get called 언니 or 누나 quite often too.

do you think that's annoying too?

i suppose i could get annoyed at everyone on korean t.v. butchering ridiculous english phrases, but i don't. i'm happy that they are even putting in that much effort and showing interest in a different culture.....

It's really annoying to me too. It's not cute at all.

Same with people who use random Japanese words as if they're a native speaker or something. Unless you're using the aforementioned because you're hanging out with a group of Korean or Japanese friends or something or you're in the environment, then I can understand. Otherwise... I don't know. It's just unnecessary and a waste of breath IMO.

Add me if you wish. :] Just mention that you're a Soompier!

I just find it annoying in those dramas.
The way the girls say 'oppa' in a squeaky way...

oppa means older brother (when said by a female) and sunbae means senior (said by male or female). but sunbae doesn't just mean older, it can be someone in a higher ranking or something like that too, or someone who has been doing something longer than you, even if they are younger.

I'm not asian but I met a Korean guy who was an exchange student in Montreal.
Everyone called him Oppa since he was older so I also joined in and asked why.
I was told that he liked it when girls called him like that...it became a joke and even the guys would call him like that too hahaha

I am Peruvian and I have not used these words in "real life", but if Internett, but not koreans friends, but for example when I write comments in cyworlds artists, men older than me, I say "OPPA "and girls" Unnie "but I do not like when people use terms Koreans all the time, simply by virtue of speaking with Korean people and worse, Internett.

But I can not deny that I like the word "Unnie", it sounds so sweet hehehe. rolleyes.gif
But I never used that word with my no Korean friends, I would think that a silly hahaha blush.gif

But the boyfriend of my sister is Korean and he said it was his "OPPA" is older than my sister and I (twins), but I've never said OPPA hahaha sounds strange.

Now that I read this, I always wanted to ask, the word "Unnie" or "OPPA", you can use to oneself?.
That is, I myself would use "Unnie", "I have always had that doubt...^^

Bye oppas and unnies hahaha just kidding sweatingbullets.gif biggrin.gif

The only time I call others Oppa, Unnie, etc are if they are really Koreans and they deserve high respect from me. I dislike those fangirls always saying "Oppa Saranghae" to like Big Bang and stuff like that. I don't feel like they appreciate the culture, but just the boys and music. For me, I like South Korea for their culture and food. That's why I want to learn Korean.

I don`t usually use these terms in public.
Even if I do, I don`t think people will understand.
I think it`s just showing respect?
But, I agree with the sqeaky voice~
It makes it irratating.

Is it just me, or is it annoying when people overuse these terms. I know in Korea it's more of a generic term, and even in Korean american circles it's just something you could say when you don't know someones name (like hey you!) or for celebs and stuff because you want to imply something more respectful than -shii. But sometimes I see other ethnicities using it and i'm like?? blink.gif What? For instance, there's this viet girl where I work, and everytime she see's me she's like OPPA!!!! *sqeaky high-pitched voice* First of all, she's not even Korean so I don't get why she's using it. And secondly shouldn't it be Sunbae anyway instead of Oppa. (I've been working there for alot longer than her)

-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^

So basically to sum it up, what do you think of people that abuse the words oppa/unnie/hyung/noona?

(Mostly pre-teen girls with squeaky voices)

-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^

I only use it if it's like my actual brother/sister, someone i've known since I was little/ is alot older than me/ Koreans I don't know the names of

HATE THAT SHT.
I call my hyungs hyungs
but whatever, who DOESNT want to be/act a TEENY bit korean right?
everyone pulls that sht off nowadays hahaha
HIT UP THE 411 or the BLOG! Thanks in advance;)

I live in a city with a lot of Vietnamese people so my school has a big majority of Vietnamese. I'm Chinese, btw. When I hear them try to count in Chinese, it kind of ticks me off. I'm so glad the 'wo ai ni' stuff died. I use to hate seeing people have it on their back packs and crap in middle school. Now, people are moving on the Korean and Japanese phrases. I love the culture, don't get me wrong. But I don't use their words in public. I don't even use it online. I think the only phrase I'd use on someone is babo. And I only call one person babo cause he likes Korean culture. ...AND! I only use it online + it's our personal inside joke, shooot.

I don't really see too many people using these terms unless they are referring to Korean singers/actors. So far I have never said that.
