I think the key to living in Melbourne, is finding cheap places to shop. Explore around the city (take a map just in case) to find some cheap stores!
Life in Melbourne is most lively at dusk, nothing big at night time.
Shame there's not much night life here (I love Night Shopping, even if I was raised here!)

hi
There are always people in the city at what ever time it is. The city's nice and most people are friendly, if you need help with directions people are willing to assist but there’s always an exception.
Depending on the month and season, there are a lot of festivals held around the city.
I’m not sure about other people but I love the small coffee shops in the shopping alley ways.
There are a lot of shops where you can get things quite cheap and “in fashion” and there’s also many branded clothing stores.
Night life in Melbourne is not as vibrant compared to other places. There isn’t anything on during the night unless you go clubbing or something (that’s just my point of view).
Although depending on where you are, you can definitely find a large supermarket that’s open until midnight, if you need to buy something urgent.
During the week end there’s aussie rule football and at times soccer and ruby matches mostly during the autum and winter season. During spring and summer there’s cricket, tennis (Australian Open) during January ( I think) and Grand Prix Formula 1. There are other sporting events too but these are the only ones I could think of.
Within CBD there’s a lot of Asians especially near the RMIT University city campus, which is basically in the middle on the city. Unless you really want to get into a certain course, chose a university campus that’s near, like a tram’s ride away, or is in the city because it’s really boring and you won’t have a lot of places to choose from to go and have lunch at compared to places in the city. I’m stuck in this situation; my course is only offered at one university in a campus further away from the CBD. BUT most of the main campuses are really big and you have literally everything there, kind of.
You need to become familiar with public transport, you might not use it but it’s still good to know eg. Where the train stations are and how to buy a ticket on a tram (coins only), etc. Avoid trains if possible because it’s really crowed and there are always delays.
You can travel around Melbourne and out of Melbourne easily using public transport because there’s at least a bus/tram/train stop near or at the main entrance of many locations such as museums, gardens, hospitals, zoos, landmarks, etc. Basically you can easily get to a destination by just taking public transport.
I hope this helps. I might have rambled on a bit sorry.
