What Would A Virtual Reality Machine Do For The World?

I was talking to my friend about the pros and cons of a Virtual Reality machine..
and we came up with:
Pros -
- Unites the World more through technology
- Cuts down on gas prices because people don't have to drive everywhere/go on airplane
- Students can attend "virtual" classes
there were more pros but I can't remember.
Cons -
- The main purpose of the internet was to unite people, but it's actually done the opposite. A lot of people become anti-social and spend all their time online.
- People will get fat from not being active.
- It could potentially cause a lot of pollution because of the materials needed to make it.
- A crazy hacker could inject a virus into the program and everyone who uses it will go into a coma!!! (.//hack reference)
Just some ideas behind it if it actually did happen.
There could be like glasses, or a helmet to wear with a TV projection on the lenses of the glasses or there could be a TV inside of the helmet.. or if technology is advanced enough, there could be like laser image projections throughout the whole room. Somewhat like what you see in all your sci-fi movies. All these big business leaders hold a meeting and they're all sitting in their chairs only they're not really there, it's just a projection of them. In the early stages, movements could be used by a controller like a PS2 controller like they did in .//hack, or a wiimote type controller could be used. So basically, like gloves? I guess. So if you wore the gloves if you raised your hand in real life, it would raise your hand in the virtual reality world.
There are actually two things I hope would come from this.
1. Next generation gaming. Virtual reality online games would be amazing.
2. It could be like the next stage of the internet, where chat rooms could actually be PEOPLE chatting to eachother personally in real life, except they're not really people, just fake, life-size projections.
I've actually hoped this would happen for a long time now, but since it's not happening, my goal in life is to do good in school and become a good programmer/engineer and make it myself (:
ALSO
!! A few years ago I was at a movie theatre and there was this simulation airplane shooting game. And basically there was a helmet with a TV inside of it, and you'd put the helmet on and then there was a joystick on the machine and that was the closest thing to Virtual Reality I've ever used in real life. It was kinda weird though XD
haha. </end nerd talk>.
But any comments / thoughts?

edit : btw, there ARE virtual reality machines that exist. but they're mainly used in the military for simulation excerisizes (ie: jumping off a plane)

i'm not much a fan of virtual reality though... you're escaping the present reality. would you really be happy with living in your own world until you pass away? i guess some people would, but i feel such an attempt would render life less meaningful. but who knows? the culture i grew up in simply doesn't allow me to accept and enjoy the possibility. perhaps future generations can be 'wired' to such acceptance

I do agree with what someone posted above regarding "porn". Somehow, I think most guys will sport the profession of a "rich male gigolo" in vr.

for me, there's a huge difference. my virtual reality would be tightly controlled. whereas the given reality [the one which we are all born into] is not. i could live inside of an artificial utopia, but my conscience would not allow for it mainly because i know the difference. to me, the reality i was born into will always be the true reality, whether or not virtual reality mimics the exact same thing. however, in such a case, it would be moot since any reason for entering virtual reality would be attributed to adding tweaks that put me into more favorable conditions. in effect, that becomes the difference i pointed out in my first couple of sentences.
