Who here is going to take the PSAT in October? I wish it was before this week's SATs so it can actually be practice. I took it last year and didn't do too well on it, but I'm hoping this year I can do better.. even if I don't qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.

Has anyone here, as a Junior, ever qualified as a semifinalist or finalist for the National Merit Scholarship by scoring high on the PSAT?

If so, what score did you get?

Everyone, feel free to share any tips, even if it's just for preparing for the SATs...

i have a few friends who are current semifinalists. they all scored extremely well, as in either the top 1 or 2 percent of all test-takers.

there are 3 sections, each out of 80 points... one of my friends got 80,80,78.

i did well, but my score was not high enough to qualify. i was the 95th percentile overall.

Really? Oh my gosh, that is such a high score... Good job to them!

What state do you live in, if you don't mind me asking? I know there's state cutoffs so some states will have a lower minimum score for qualifiers than others.

I'm a current semifinalist - yes, some states have higher/lower cutoffs than others. I live in NJ, and I think our cutoff was somewhere around 222? My score was 233 - 77 verbal, 80 math, 76 writing.

As for advice for preparing - do practice tests! Familiarize yourself with the style and types of questions. Study vocab and read a lot =)

I'm a semifinalist..I was really surprised about it though xD;

I got 65, 76, and 80. 99th percentile.

I think the PSAT is easier than the SAT XD or maybe I just can't sit still for 4 hours and concentrate. Tips...practice, and have a good foundation.

yeah i have to take it. i took it last year as a sophomore and got a 227 which is pretty good i guess, like 98th percentile-ish? 99th? anyway hopefully this year i'll do better and get over a 230 at least and qualify and stuff. well i'm not stressin' about it, but that's probably because i haven't thought about it yet.

Darn! I was going to take the PSATs this year... but it turns on that I'm busy on the 15th. Our school didn't even bother to mention it to anyone! I was disappointed. Bah. I wanted to do it these year! I shall take it next year, though! I'm going to start practicing this year, though.

last year, this girl in my class supposedly got in the 99th percentile and she was a sophomore. i don't doubt it though cuz she's like REALLY smart. she even got a 5 on the ap bio exam. jflsdfjls.

wow i feel..dumb. i was in the 83 percentile. i'm taking it again next week, and hopefully i'll do better since i took kaplan and i took one SAT so far.

I'm taking it this coming Wednesday. I wish it was on a Saturday though. I'm missing my Running Start classes because of it.

It should be the same as SAT, except possibly easier. And there is no writing section. I think there will be one if you're a semifinalist advancing onto a finalist. I think that's it...

yeah i'm really nervous baout taking it next wednesday. i started studying today because of hte long weekend..hopefully ill get a lot done. haha
