*added slight edit for clarification*
Hi there soompiers!

I am doing a research project for an Asian American psychology course and would really appreciate having volunteers answer the survey below about Asian Americans in the media and identity. The survey looks very long but half the survey comprises of basic/one-word response questions, so please don't be discouraged by the length. It will take about 20 minutes and you do not have to respond to any question that you feel uncomfortable with answering.

Ethically, I have to keep the survey responses confidential. That means NO ONE will have access to your individual answers. I will NOT give anyone your name, any other personal information about you or your individual answers, and will keep your identifying information separate from your survey answers. So it would be great if you could use the send message function of soompi forums and copy and paste the the survey and your answers to the message . Feel free to be completely honest in your answers. And for some of the ratings-type questions, if you feel that a number rating does not do justice to your thoughts, you can write an open response.

Thank you so much!!

Asian Americans in the American media and identity…
6. List the first 5 Asians/Asian Americans in the American media and their roles that come to mind. What are your thoughts on how they are depicted?
I did roles first, then depiction:
a) Jackie Chan - "Rush Hour"/"Shanghai Noon" type movies, depicted more of an oriental sidekick of an "American" person, master of "kung fu" (he's always the foreigner)
cool.gif Lucy Lui - Charlie's Angels, don't really hear much about her in the media
c) Tila Tequila - "A Shot a Love", Playboy magazine, depicted as promiscuous / a ho and is bisexual
d) Jet Li - mainly his overseas films, always depicted as this master martial artist who, like Jackie Chan, is always the foreigner in American films
e) Bai Ling - "But Can They Sing?" tv show, depicted as odd, weird-looking/oddly dressed...

7. What stereotypes have you come across in the depiction of Asian Americans and how do you feel about seeing them?

8. How important is it to you that you see Asian Americans images in the media? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)
3

9. Would you watch a movie or tv show starring an Asian American? Why or why not? In what genre would you prefer to see an Asian American lead? In what genre would you NOT prefer?
Yes and no, depending on how good the tv show/movie actually is. I'll watch it because it has an Asian/Asian American in it.
I would like to see them lead maybe in a mystery/drama/action type genre.
Martial Arts-type genre is definately a no because that is so overdone.

10. How likely do you think that Non-Asians Americans are to watch a movie or tv show starring an Asian American? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)
1

11. Do you seek media images from your ethnic country? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very) If yes, why and how often?
2 - Just to see what countries are represented

12. What are the first 3 things that come to mind when you think “American”?
white dominate

3 - I'd like to be an actual part of this country and still keep my asian heritage

15. What are the first 3 things that come to mind when you think “Asian American”?
asian who lies in america
probably white-washed
...

16. What are your own perceptions of Asian American women? What about your perceptions of Asian American men?
Both are more open and honest (less old-fashioned like "how they are" in their home country)

17. How do you feel about your own Asian American identity? Have you felt empowered by it? Has there ever been a time when you felt that being Asian American hindered you-socially, academically, relationships-wise, body image, etc.?
I personally love being Asian. ^^ I don't really know why,
The only things I don't like are all the stereotypes, like that asians can't drive or that they are all good at math. Americans really set the academics high for Asians because they assume that we are really smart.

2. What Asian American generation are you? 1st=you are a recent immigrant, 1.5=you immigrated here before age 3, 2nd=parents were immigrants, 3rd=parents’ parents were immigrants, and so forth.

2nd Generation, but my great-grandfathers immigrated here in the 1910s-1920s, but b/c of 1965 immigration act, my parents were able to come to US

3 Do you live in a community where there are many Asians/Asian Americans?

Yes. About 20% of the town. But, I live in the Bay Area. w00t!

4. How aware do you think you are concerning Asian American issues? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)

3.5-4ish

5. How often do you watch tv/read magazines/listen to music? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)

3

Asian Americans in the American media and identity…

6. List the first 5 Asians/Asian Americans in the American media and their roles that come to mind. What are your thoughts on how they are depicted?

William Hung, Bruce Lee, Jin, Jacky Chen, Tila Tequlia, Lucy Liu

Sorry if I go beyond the limit.
William Hung, while he might have wanted to be in AMidol, was just trying to have fun, and I can't blame him.
Bruce Lee, while I don't know much about him (even though he's really really famous!), has a lot of inspiring quotes.
Jin -- ehh, I don't really care much about him. Same with Jacky Chen. Hip-hop and martial arts aren't really big on me.
Tila and Lucy Liu.. man, I really don't like how Tila really does all that stuff on that one show on MTV -- A shot of love. But, I really don't care anyway.

7. What stereotypes have you come across in the depiction of Asian Americans and how do you feel about seeing them?
Emasculated (i.e. cant get girls), kung fu person, nerd (engineer), quiet

Erm, it leaves me without role models, you know? But, role models are a universal thing, and race shouldn't necessarily matter.
Although, it'd be nice to have a really good As-Am actor/actress doing something different. A change you know, so I can actually feel more confident that there are other roles other than engineering.

Asian culture and obeying your parents to do jobs that can bring wealth (i.e. engineering) by being very smart really influences my life, you know? It's hard to break the barrier. My first two sentences to this ?, while true, conflict with the restrictions I was brought up with that being like a teacher or actor or some soc. science role is bad, whereas engineering, doctor, or business is good.

8. How important is it to you that you see Asian Americans images in the media? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)

3.5-4ish.

9. Would you watch a movie or tv show starring an Asian American? Why or why not? In what genre would you prefer to see an Asian American lead? In what genre would you NOT prefer?

Yes. I can learn more about Asian-American viewpoints, and maybe something new for a change. I'm tired of nerd roles and I would want to see like a As-Am ambitious person (PLEASE, everything but nerdy roles. maybe somebody who helps the worldwide community). Just none of the same ol same ol roles (unless he/she did something really cool scientifically of interest; race shouldn't matter).

10. How likely do you think that Non-Asians Americans are to watch a movie or tv show starring an Asian American? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)

I wouldn't know. I'll put 3 for average. It depends on the show (i.e. if it's indie As-Amer film, etc.)

11. Do you seek media images from your ethnic country? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very) If yes, why and how often?

4. Yes. However, they tend to be Asian-American artists in Asia (i.e. Lena Park. I'm a guy, but you got to admit, she's one heck of a nice girl).

12. What are the first 3 things that come to mind when you think “American”?

White, Black, Latino

13. Rate how “American” you feel. (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very)

2.5-3ish

14. How important is it to you to fit in to American culture? (Ratings scale 1-5: 1= not at all, 5= very) And why?

Does it matter? I think what matters is you search your roots and keep it alive in America, make it a part of the woven fabric of America. A 3.

15. What are the first 3 things that come to mind when you think “Asian American”?

Transcontinental Railroad, Education, Sucess

16. What are your own perceptions of Asian American women? What about your perceptions of Asian American men?

I think there are both negative stereotypes out of both. As-Am and As-Am women should challenge themselves and do something different for once in the media if they really want to, but not for racial reasons, but for the passion of life.

17. How do you feel about your own Asian American identity? Have you felt empowered by it? Has there ever been a time when you felt that being Asian American hindered you-socially, academically, relationships-wise, body image, etc.?

I'm great with life, really, but I fear the erosion of Asian culture. I feel empowered and proud of Chinese-American history and wish to learn more about East Asian History (I might major in East Asian Studies).
I don't remember if there were times when I was hindered b/c of my identity. When I was in middle school, and elementary school, I didn't really think much about race except for the fact that a lot of Asians were smart in my school. I didn't really know why or questioned it until I got into high school when we learned about World cultures and Confucianism
