there is actually one deal going on right now but without the monitor. It comes with a quad core with 3 gb of ram and 500gb of hard drive space. You can find more information on it here: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=794975

Wow, I second that suggestion. A quad-core system with lots of hard drive space and 3 GB of ram would certainly last for a good while. Thanks for the link. I have a friend who's considering a new build, so I'll refer him to that deal. I might be tempted to jump in on that as well.

Get a Mac then if you are tired of XP and don't like Vista. Just remember that with the iMac, and other macs, you will no be able to upgrade anything.

In that case, you may or may not want to look into Macs. I'm not an apple fan, i hate em, but if thats what you're doing, they're fine.
Even the E6600 (i think its top of the line dual core now) should be more than enough.
You'll have massive price cuts because the onboard graphics card is just fine, you dont need to worry about cooling, or acoustic levels.
I personally dont like HP, and gateway has failed me too many times to buy from them again.
The safest route i say is either a low-middle end dell, or a build it yourself from memoryexpress or something.

^ onboard graphic card uses system memory though; i don't sit too well with that.

umm... get rid of your motherboard, power supply, graphics card, and processor. keep your harddrive, burner, and possibly ram. this isn't exactly upgrading, but more like, building a whole new system with some leftovers lolz. with what you mentioned, i don't think you need anything more than a 2.4 ghz processor, 2gb ram (can always update), a decent motherboard, and graphics card (with DVI/analog instead of the old one which i suspect to only support analog). if you plan to reuse your devices though, check to see if they're IDE or SATA. motherboards these days can only support 2 IDE devices since they only have 1 IDE slot. and if you're not familiar with building comps, just go to a place that would customize comps for you - and bring a comp geek friend who knows what he's talking about with you just in case.

Are you looking to build your own or buy a brand name one? If you're looking to buy a brand name one avoid: Dell, HP/Compaq, e-Machines and Gateway.

this is definitely good enough for higher end fps games(like say, mostly TF2 and maybe CoD4 or bioshock if i get them) and hq videos right?(if i upgrade the video card anyway). i was thinking of attempting to build my own computer for the first time, but this seems to have everything i need at a good price...

Every Mac I've owned, I've upgraded.
