i'm not really a game freak, photographer, nothing really fancy..
but, i like to produce music and i have tons of music on my computer. i like to watch youtube videos, and im not really happy wen
my computer lags or wen the internet connection is crappy.
i have a dell, which has been upgraded to a 300gb hard drive and a new LCD screen.
but i've had it for 5 years, so my parents are willing to buy me a new computer since, we're moving, i'm going to high school.
and i'm trynna study my ass off. and basically, im on AIM a lot. something that will last me another 4 years.
my budget is 1000-1400 dollars.
desktops!

I also suggest going with a dell computer. there have been specials going on where you can buy a quad core dell with a 24' lcd monitor for around $600. Since you have a monitor, you can sell that on ebay for 350 and you'd end up paying 250 on a computer that would probably last you years for what you want to do on it.

there is actually one deal going on right now but without the monitor. It comes with a quad core with 3 gb of ram and 500gb of hard drive space. You can find more information on it here: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=794975

Wow, I second that suggestion. A quad-core system with lots of hard drive space and 3 GB of ram would certainly last for a good while. Thanks for the link. I have a friend who's considering a new build, so I'll refer him to that deal. I might be tempted to jump in on that as well.

i wasnt really satisfied with dell,
which made me stereotype dell as a "cheap" "crappy" type of computer..
so, i'm looking for a new brand..and my dad's computer has vista on it...and i dont realy like it
and im getting kinda sick of XP,

so whats good with imac!

Dell are just "best bang for buck" computers and apparently that doesn't apply to hypokritical seeing what his budget is.

Get a Mac then if you are tired of XP and don't like Vista. Just remember that with the iMac, and other macs, you will no be able to upgrade anything.

if all you're doing is music, youtube, and AIM, then you'll only need 700-1000$ depending.
In that case, you may or may not want to look into Macs. I'm not an apple fan, i hate em, but if thats what you're doing, they're fine.
Even the E6600 (i think its top of the line dual core now) should be more than enough.
You'll have massive price cuts because the onboard graphics card is just fine, you dont need to worry about cooling, or acoustic levels.

I personally dont like HP, and gateway has failed me too many times to buy from them again.
The safest route i say is either a low-middle end dell, or a build it yourself from memoryexpress or something.

Feel free to drop by and chat =]

umm... get rid of your motherboard, power supply, graphics card, and processor. keep your harddrive, burner, and possibly ram. this isn't exactly upgrading, but more like, building a whole new system with some leftovers lolz. with what you mentioned, i don't think you need anything more than a 2.4 ghz processor, 2gb ram (can always update), a decent motherboard, and graphics card (with DVI/analog instead of the old one which i suspect to only support analog). if you plan to reuse your devices though, check to see if they're IDE or SATA. motherboards these days can only support 2 IDE devices since they only have 1 IDE slot. and if you're not familiar with building comps, just go to a place that would customize comps for you - and bring a comp geek friend who knows what he's talking about with you just in case.

Yeah got with a Desktop for now, since you're in High School.

Are you looking to build your own or buy a brand name one? If you're looking to buy a brand name one avoid: Dell, HP/Compaq, e-Machines and Gateway.

this is definitely good enough for higher end fps games(like say, mostly TF2 and maybe CoD4 or bioshock if i get them) and hq videos right?(if i upgrade the video card anyway). i was thinking of attempting to build my own computer for the first time, but this seems to have everything i need at a good price...
