Okay so i'm writing a essay about Romeo and Juliet, and my topic is Was R&J relationship true love or infatuation, my htough is it's infatuation, now i need a like 2 arguments stating why it's infatuation.
I already got that Romeo was just finding a replacement for Rosaline, and my other argument is that juliet was hesitating into marrying Romeo and didnt think it thought at the balcony scene....
Can anyone help me?

EDIT
OMG dont kill but i decided that it was true love, anyone have any arguments about that?? please??

The whole play takes place in what, two days?
They "fall in love" in a matter of hours while knowing pretty much nothing about each other.

omg dont kill me but i decided that maybe it was true love, since like everyone said it was infatuation, but there's no time in love, so it oculd of been love at first sight.

^ You could argue that, but it's hard to prove that "love at first sight" exists.
I personally think "love at first sight" is BS. I don't think you can love someone without KNOWING the person. I don't mean knowing their entire life story, but you still need to know the basics, don't you?

I would argue true love because of, rather the time frame, the changes in the characters.

Wikipedia makes a better argument than I could smile.gif.

Well, I personally think it fits infatuation more. But since you're arguing true love... you can say that they were willing to die for each other [even though it ended up being quite stupid sleep.gif] and then their family issues didn't keep them away from each other. It's more of a love at first sight thing which I don't believe in so it's hard to argue for.

They start making out the first night... I've always bashed the whole idea of Romeo and Juliet loving each other...

And it was teenage angst that made them kill themselves XD

i think its infatuation and not true love..i mean they supposedly fell in love with each other right when they met..i dont think thats true
besides...juliet was like what 12? or was it 14? either way she was young and was easily influenced and romeo wanted to replace rosaline (like you already said)
i think if u chose infatuation..writing ur essay would be easier happy.gif

its infatuation.
they barely even know each other.
they don't really know anything about each other.
how can you truely love someone without even knowing them?

Infatuation.

You can't possible claim it to be true love in friggen two days ==''

they met each other at first sight.
then makeout - yet they dont know ANYTHING about one another.
next day they killed each other.

I believe it's infatuation, and I think it might be easier to argue that as well. I never thought about this; it's interesting.

i say infatuation...
because the whole thing takes place in what, 2 days? [as someone said]
they saw each other... and said they were already in love... they barely even knew anything about each other...

for true love... i can think of some arguments:
they were willing to sacrifice anything, just to be together [even their lives]

she was 13.
but umm.. in the old days... this wasnt considered young !!!
only nowadays you have to be like older than 20 to get married for people to judge you right...

Why did you decide to argue for true love? Any particular reason? In an essay like this, it's best to pick the side which you have the most reasons to support your argument. There is no right or wrong answer as long as you can prove your argument.

By the way, I also believe it was an infatuation, for reasons already stated above. I always thought that their decision was rash, and they didn't think about the consequences of their actions.

I think it was an infatuation. They barely knew each other and were just caught up in the moment. Romeo also changed his heart so quickly. You have to keep in mind that this happened in less that 2 weeks. ._.

Edit: Oh yeah, Juliet's father did say that she could've left if she wanted to (by refusing to marry Paris) but she decided not to. How the heck is that true love?

I say it was Shakespeare's raging hormones that produced that play lol.

Hmm I guess you can go with true love saying that love isnt always about the length, it can be this mutual connection and feeling?

It's infatuation because just hours before Romeo met Juliet, he was madly in love with Rosalie (remember?). So if his feelings change so fast, it must have been one jump to another. Also, they did not take time to get to know each other, and their conversations were always about their love for one another and how beautiful the opposite was. Plus, they didn't try to confront each other and took their own routes (ie faking their death, etc.) to get what they wanted. All in all, it sums up to what they wanted, not really what each other wants. However, it was their infatuation that lead to the merging of the Capulets and Mon..somethings.

You can't really use the age argument though, cause it makes sense back then for them to marry at that age. Heck, they even had sex in the play! Also, the day argument is flimsy because there's no proof using the play that you can't fall in love within a few days. After all, another one of Shakespeare's plays says the lover finds beauty in everything, so would Romeo and Juliet be lovers as they find beauty in the world when they "fall in love?" It's better to use the fact that they are fickle in behaviour, (like Hamlet's mother) as they switch back and forth.

infatuation.

like some posters said, they met for 2 hours and BAM they're in love - -'

It's just me, but love doesn't happen in 2 hours.

Um...think about it. It's Shakespeare, a tragic ending....in the play world, they do really fall in love. You can't look at it from our time's perspective, which is that you need to know everything about your lover to love them, but that wasn't the mindset back then.

And they died for each other. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will. Although Romeo was in love with Rosalie, the reason why he fell out of it so quickly and in love with Juliet was the whole idea of recognizing your soulmate when you immediately see him/her.
