Lift weights. If you want to lose weight, you really want to lose fat. Weightlifting builds muscle, which increases the resting metabolic rate. I suggest buying the book Power to the People, by Pavel Tsatsouline. Go to http://www.dragondoor.com/b10.html to buy it.

i think diet is a bigger part of fat loss than lifting weights. doing everything [weights, cardio, diet, etc] is the best, but i think it's diet first, and exercise second.

"Burn the fat, feed the muscle" by Tom Venuto is a pretty good resource on nutrition. e-book only though.

They're not mutually exclusive. However, when changing one's diet, it's important to keep protein intake up, because it takes protein to build muscle.

of course not. otherwise, i wouldn't say that it is best to do everything [eat well, exercise, etc]. actually, they're quite synergistic. however, eating right can still make up for poor exercise habits while exercising won't make up for poor eating habits [save for freak-of-nature genetics].

and yes, it's important to get in protein. not only for growth [if you exercise] but simply to prevent catabolism [even when you don't].
