We have good news and bad news. The good news is that IBM is exploiting electrons to create memory with 100x the data density we see today. In terms of iPod, that's 500,000 songs. The bad news is that the technology won't be ready for 7+ years. Here's how it works:

In a crude analogy, think of staggered nanowires as roads that, through simple urban planning, create magnetic alleys to store data. Cars/information can race around throughout the entire grid, but it can only park in the alleys. That information can then be read by exploiting the magnetic fields generated by electron spin. Essentially, the entire system is tiny, but there's a viable magnetic signature to track it all.

Also, because we're dealing with such minute forces and measurements, hardware should run quite cool.

The racetrack research team is prepared to build the prototype, which they consider a 3 to 4 year process. Commercial products are then another few years away from that.

Today digital data is stored in two main types of devices, magnetic hard disk drives, and solid state random access memories. The former stores data very cheaply but, since it relies on the mechanical rotation of a disk, is slow and somewhat unreliable. The latter allows rapid access to data but the cost is about 100 times higher per bit than a magnetic disk drive.

At Almaden we are working on a radically new storage-memory technology based on recently discovered spintronic phenomena. One of these is a means of using spin currents to directly manipulate the magnetic state of nano-scale magnetic regions – magnetic domain walls – within magnetic nano-wires. This device, the magnetic race-track, is a powerful storage-class memory which promises a solid state memory with the cost and storage capacities rivaling that of magnetic disk drives but with much improved performance and reliability. This could provide another revolution in our ability to access and manipulate digital information.

why would u want 500,000 songs when u cant listen to all of them...pretty pointless.
that is so much songs like it would probably take 3 months to listen to..

meh, not exactly something that would get me jumping in the air :/ unless i can substitute part of the 500,000 songs for simply memory space.

that's good news. What's important to look at is not at how many songs it can hold, but what OTHER data it can hold, aka movies, data, programs, etc....... smile.gif

It's annoying how everything is "in terms of an iPod".

Just say DAP or MP3 player...

I don't think that they literally mean that they're going to make an iPod with the technology. It's just a example of how much data you'd be able to store in that small package.

The issue I really have with this technology is that it sounds overly complicated such that it seems like something that won't ever finish being developed. In 7-10 years between now and the first products using the technology is released, our current technology for solid state memory will already be close to that 100x level I'm sure.

I mean, we're already pushing some insane storage capacities (I mean we're already getting 32GB microSD cards) and it's only a matter of cost. I mean just imagine how many microSD cards you can shove into a hard drive enclosure.

and in 7+ years our iPods will probably have 999+ Gb memories anyways.
Tho this could be kinda useful, you could basically save your life and soul in a thumb size memory stick.

lol, my video ipod could orginally hold up 7000 songs
but 500,00 songs is a bit overboard, i guess. it'd b good if there were tons of room for other stuff.

How unneccessary.

[font=arial]Pointless. I doubt you're actually going to put 500,000 songs & listen to all of them.

I only have 1,000 on my IPod, and I only listen to what ... 200 of those songs ?
