My version of Microsoft Word expired some time ago, and a friend of mine suggested this replacement.
http://www.abiword.com/
It's a pretty decent alternative to word, and it's absolutely free and legal.
Abiword Download

I still save my documents as word files though.
In order to do this, just save as"whateveryourtitleis.doc"
The ".doc" is very important. If you don't do this, it will automatically save as an Abiword document that will only be opened with Abiword.

*note
- some of the formatting gets messed up (i.e. page numbering moves from right to left)
- it does not automatically capitalize anything for you
- the grammar/spell check isn't as up to par as word

This IS much better than not having Microsoft Word at all, but it allows me to work on my files at home. biggrin.gif

Why not OpenOffice?
Its basically the same you have to save it as a .doc as well.

i dont think the current versions of openoffice (or any other alternative to ms office) support the new ms .docx/etc formats. i hear the upcoming openoffice 3.0 does though. thats the big thing that turns me off openoffice atm.

How about Wordpad?

Most computers have it.. I think.
It's like the ghetto version and it works fine for me.

As earlier posters suggested, you should use Open Office. It works with any Microsoft Office document format and it's free. The only thing I need it to do wis work with my PDF files. Then, I will be happy.

OpenOffice is probably the best free one out there, but I still prefer Google docs as I can acces all my file where ever I am, even if I don't have my laptop with me. And the best part is that even school proxy servers let me use it.
