I am currently 17 years old in a highly competitive high school. A parent recently asked me to tutor 1 on 1 with her son and is offering to pay cash for it. The child is in 3rd grade and I will be tutoring him for about 2 hours each week. What is a reasonable price for me to charge for tutoring? I am currently in NYC btw.

hmmmm well when i was in Algebra II i was getting one on one tutoring from this girl that was a Math Major at my nearby university.......i would meet with her for like one hour twice a week....and i would pay her

$30 per hour......thats a pretty reasonable rate !!! but then again i was older and it was kinda hard stuff....and i dont think that it's gonna be too hard tutoring a third grader.....but talk 2 the parents and work something out !

Anywhere from $10 to $20.
You shouldn't be charging a lot to tutor a third grader. It would be different if it was a high schooler or if you've had experience tutoring before.

Yeah, I think around $10-20 since he's only in third grade. ^^

I agree. I first started tutoring a high schooler at $25 an hour, and I also came from a competitive high school and was in the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of college (cornell u.) Regardless of what your credentials are though, you are teaching a third grader.

It may sound easy when you put it like that, but it's not about what you understand how to do in the 3rd grade. You have to get the child to understand.

I'd charge 15 or 20 bucks an hour, 15 being on the cheap side.

The first time I tutored I charged $15/hour.
As I became more experienced, I started to charge $20/hour.

I know professionals charge from $30~$50+, so I don't think
you should be charging more than $30.

&I agree with Classic Example.
The student that I have the hardest time with is a FIRST grader.
(I tutor two first graders, one second grader, and a seventh grader)
It's the strategy that you, as a teacher, use to get the student to understand
the concepts--enough so that they can figure it out on their own once you've helped them.

I would charge around $12 an hour. It's only a 3rd grader.

I had a tutor before, he taught me Alg 2, Geometry, and Pre-Calc and helped me prepare for the SAT Math IIC, and he only charged $15/hour. All his students get above 700 on the MathII, although most get 800s.

what school do you go to?
People at my school charge $50ish per session but that's cuz we sell our school's name. I go to hunter college high school btw.

hmm... charge $30 an hour if you're good at it charge $25 per hour if you're inexperienced.
I had a tutor from Kindergarten-5th grade charged me $30 an hour for 1-1.5 hours. but... inflation blah blah blah would make that about eh $40ish by today's standards. so... since you're a student with potential to teach better than a decent NYCBOE teacher charge slightly less = ~30. If you're doing it for kicks/fun/to do something good charge like $5 because you need that for transportation fees.

good luck.

But... I would charge $300 a week when I plan to tutor Monday-Friday for a whole summer for 2 hours per session before college XD.

I *personally* wouldn't charge =). However, I'd ask for a recommendation or something instead; which would be far more important.

Charge $50 dollars an hour. Then during your sessions, buy the kid $45 worth of ice cream to compensate for his psychotic mother. What the hell is a 3rd grader doing getting tutoring. Let him play with his friends during your sessions if you really want to help him.

Use some of it to take him out.
The kid is only 9-10ish for peat sake wtf?
